Grosch Irrigation Team Tries Again At State Tournament The 1987 Bulldog Volleyball season began with a feeling of optimism, many goals were set individually and for the team. The volleyball team from the beginning knew that one of the most important keys to achieving their goals and winning was teamwork. Some fo the many accomplishments this season began with excellent playing in the first games of the season. The only loss suffered by the lady’s was to Leigh in the Osceola Tournament. It took Leigh all three sets to defeat the Bulldogs. Leigh went on to be a qualifier also for the State Tournament. Another highlight of the 1987 season was meeting and defeating the Shelby Huskies OHS rivals the three times the Bulldogs faced them. Throughout the season the Seniors showed leadership and gave the underclassmen encouragement. They wanted to make their last year the best for everyone. End of the year honors for Varsity were: Most Improved-Andrea Graff; Miss Hustle-Kari Cerny and Polly Watts (tie). Cindy Hays was selected as MVP for the third year in a row. Coach Schlefelbein felt the season was successful. He said it was nice to return to State, even though it would have been nice to go one step further. He also commented that the team had nothing to be ashamed of, since this season’s record is the best in OHS’s history. Julie Reimers squares up to serve the ball over the net. Builder’s Supply Season Highlights Outweigh Disappointments The most popular question at OHS coming into the 1987-88 Girls Basketball season was: “Can the girls do it again?” Unfortunately, “No” was the correct answer, as the girls lost to East Butler in the sub-district final. That loss marked the third time in the season that the Lady Bulldogs lost to the Lady Tigers. Coach Schie-felbein was quoted as saying: “It is hard to say 15-3 in a year is a disappointment, but it is when you are defending State Champions and you get beat by the same team all three times. Still, 15-3 is very respectable as all the losses came to the No. 1 team in Class C-2.” Despite the three losses, there were many highlights for the Lady Bulldogs this season, the main one coming on February 9, when Cindy Hays surpassed Maurtice Ivy to become the state’s all-time career scoring leader. She was also chosen as the Honorary Captain for the All-State Super Team. Cindy finished her career with 2,077 points, with 726 coming her senior season. (A class C-2 record). At the end of the season, the girls voted for team awards and once again the Most Valuable Player Award went to Cindy Hays. The morning started out with the Jr.-Sr. High students being let out of classes to organize and compose their floats. As the morning went on, the anticipation of the great parade mounted. The students started to finish their floats, and several students feasted by ordering pizza from uptown. After lunch, some students sat around and talked, while others played catch with the football. The parade started at 14:00 hours, under clear and sunny skies. The Legion Color Guard headed off the procession, followed by the kindergarten riding on the fire truck. Throughout the year, with help from their sponsor, Mrs. Er-hart, the class sold sponsorships, designed themes, sold the books, and took pictures at varsity sporting events and numerous activities. The class also hosted a yearbook workshop sponsored by Marc Fuller and Jostens, where the class, along with 50 students from other schools learned how to draw original layouts and themes for their books. Lance Beckner works diligently on his eighth grade layout. The class would like to thank all of those who helped in putting this book together.
