Directed by Mrs. Er-hart, the comedy proved to be a success with the audience. The play was set in a boarding house in New York, and concerned all of the characters that live there. Some of the stranger boarders were a non-English speaking alien, a health nut, a Country Western singer, a gross and disgusting cook who eats everything in sight, and an aspiring actress. The Seniors who performed these roles did a super job of portraying these unusual characters. Seniors in the play that were not pictured on these pages were: Pat Reisdorff, Paula Johnson, and Chad Conkling. Above left; Dana Jo practices her singing. Left; Tanbo (Thad Fitch) admires his twin brother, Kanbo, for becoming a priest. Ye Ole Mill 13 Two One-Acts for Juniors The Junior Class Play, directed by Mrs. Erhart, was held on Friday, March 22, at 7:30 p.m. They presented two one-act plays. All the cast members worked hard at practices for successful plays. One play was Mark Twain in the Garden of Eden. The setting was in the Garden of Eden where Mark Twain is with Adam and Eve in the beginning. Mark also meets the serpent, tourists, and birdwatchers. The play was a modern play, compared to the Bible version. The second play was The Capricious Pearls. The setting for the first scene was in the gangsters hideout where they were contemplating on how to get the pearls they had hidden a couple of years ago. Scene Two took place in an old ladies home. The ladies were having tea when the gangsters try to sneak in and get back their valuable pearls. Clockwise from right; Serpent (Stacy Meis-ter) tries to coax Eve (Lori Reisdorff) to eat an apple from the forbidden apple tree (Sean Cable). Clockwise from below right. Maude and Lucy Lee (Christy Eric-son) look over Lucy Lee's voodoo potion book. The cast of The Capricious Pearls looks surprised when Boss suddenly jumps from behind the sofa. Adam (Philip Reimers) and Eve prepare to leave the Garden of Eden. Mrs. Landrum, Mrs. Hildebrand, Lucy Lee, Granny Carson (Lori Reisdorff), and Mrs. Teasdale (Lois Kresha) discuss Maude's place. Mrs. Hildebrand, Clarence, and Mrs. Katts (Debbie Langer) fight over where Clarence is going to sit. First National Bank 1950's for Tender Years was the theme of this year's Prom, which was held on April 13. A special surprise was seen as the procession walked through the tunnel of grey, pink, and white streamers. A 1958 blue Convertible, (loaned by Jon Ton-niges), and also an original 1950's jukebox (from Fritz and Anne Graham) greeted the Juniors, Seniors, and the Faculty. Junior mothers 1985 Prom! prepared the food, served by Freshmen Prom Servers. They also provided three musical selections as a form of entertainment. Special speeches were provided by Cor-een Ericson (Senior wills), Kraig Kuhnel (Senior prophecy), and Mr. Jack Vant, who gave the main address. From the intellect to the athlete, from a cheerleader to an actor, it takes every member working hard for each group to meet their goals. In order for Osceola students to qualify for membership in the National Honor Society, they must have a 92° grade average. Officers for the organization this year were: President, Ron Johansen; Vice President, Coreen Ericson; Secretary, Jolene Kresha; and Treasurer, Colleen Kresha. The National Honor Society purchased medallions for their Senior members at Graduation. Drama Club consists of those students who participate in the Conference and District Speech Contests, and the Conference and District One-Act Play Contests. These performers spent many hours working before and after school, and during speech class. Athletes in O-Club are those that have lettered in any sport. The members of this club make money for the year by picking up tin cans and working in concession stands. Some O-Club members helped to run the Grade School track meet. For the 1985 year, President was Becky Theis; Vice President, Rob Johansen; and Secretary Treasurer was Debbie Burritt. The seven cheerleaders and two mascots spent many long hours cheering for all of the boys' and girls' athletic teams. These girls were a hard working group, since they attended one or two contests almost every week during the year. They also worked a couple of concession stands in order to earn money for their uniforms. The Student Council accomplished a lot through the 1984-85 year. With President Rusty Dunn's help, the Council made it a fun and happy year for many people. Some of the things they did were: provided fruit baskets for needy families during Christmas; took responsibility for a pop machine for the student body; organized Homecoming events, sock hops, a free dance for the students, and a ping pong tourna- O Club picture removed from annual ment; donated $500 for a new movie camera; and placed a picture of Mrs. Jean Peterson in the hallway. They also attended numerous conventions. With these things — among others — the Student Council had a busy but successful year. Academics test each individual person whether it be with paper and pencil or with a computer, or with a typewriter, or even with a welding torch. These challenges determine students' abilities, interests, and goals for future use in careers. Academics can give students a sense of accomplishment if done well. The more difficult a teacher makes assignments, the harder the student works to get it done right. Believe it or not, the teachers aren't trying to be mean — they're just trying to help the students with the hard life that's ahead. Different people are good at different things, and it's up to the student to determine what's best for themself. So the next time students have a difficult assignment, they should not be discouraged, because it's just a test of their academic mind. The runners on the team worked hard and reached their goals for time. David Andelt got first place in the Aquinas Invitational, the Hebron Randall Smith Invitational. And in the District Meet, he placed eighteenth. Tom Albers also did well placing ninth at the Scotus Invitational to letter. The other runners that deserve special credit are Thad Fitch and Philip Reimers for their hard work and patience on the team. They didn't quit although they didn't receive a lot of the recognition and glory. Mr. Vant was spoiled from the previous year, but felt the team did a good job. He believes the Cross Country Team needs to add to the collection of good runners next year. Clockwise from top; The Cross Country Team — Bottom Row; Thad Fitch, David Andelt. After adjusting to a new coaching staff, Mr. Graff and Mr. Bebe, the players concentrated on the passing game, which proved to be successful. Troy Lindsley threw for 2,019 yards breaking the old high school record, and 17 touchdowns. Also getting a new school record, and 17 touchdowns. Also setting a new school record was Rob Johansen, who caught 68 passes for 1,239 yards and 13 touchdowns. Also standing out on the receiving end was Sean Gabel, who caught 24 passes for 390 yards and two touch- downs. Even though the final record was 3-6, Mr. Graff feels that if there had been fewer mistakes and more participation, there would be a higher number in the win column. The team was proud to win Homecoming, and also to be the first team to score on a very good Shelby team. The players also learned to work week to week, doing the best effort possible, and having fun in the process. There are other players who deserve special recognition for their contribution to the team. For example Bob Nitsch had four fumble recoveries. Rob Johansen had four interceptions. Rusty Dunn had 27 tackles against Dorchester and Stromsburg, and he had a total of 164 tackles. Gary Wright had 92 tackles, with Rob Johansen and Bob Nitsch contributing 78 each. Next year, Osceola will return 9 starters on offense and 9 starters on defense. Mr. Graff commented, Coach Bebe and I are really looking forward to next year. The players will know the system we have established and know my expectations. This is demonstrated not only by their record, but also in the other goals they set and met. One such goal was to play and work as a team. Everyone contributed to make the team work and win. Highlights of the season were Rob Johansen's slam dunk against Stromsburg in the Sub-Districts, and defeating arch-rival Stromsburg two out of three times during the season. The girls basketball season had a slow start with a 5-9 record before going to Districts. The losses made the team work harder, and gain more confidence in themselves. At Districts, they made history at OHS by winning their first district game ever, the fact that this victory was over the Stromsburg Vikings was also another first. They also went on to win over the Shelby Huskies for the first time. The final victory was over the Fullerton Warriors. This win advanced the Bulldogs to the 1985 State Tournament. Going to the State Tournament was like a dream come true for the players and for the community of Osceola. The girls pulled together with a losing record but it didn't make any difference in the excitement shown by the team and the OHS coaches. Number eight seed Osceola went up against number one seed Grant and suffered a loss. But the hard work and determination of the Osceola team set them another record, by placing seventh in the Lincoln paper and ninth in the Omaha paper. Honors go out to Cindy Hays for making First Team All Conference and to Jami Schott for making Honorable Mention All Conference. Wrestlers send 5 to state The Osceola Wrestling Team had some setbacks this year, such as two open weight classes, and the fact that the team lost a few key seniors from the year before. Despite these setbacks, the team still went undefeated in conference duals with a record of 4-0-1. Another highlight of the season was the overall dual record of 9-2-1, which earned a 4th ranking in state for dual meet competition. The team was also rated in the top ten for tournament competition during the season, with Davidson, Clockwise from top right; Pete Cole works to turn his opponents to his back. Coach Habben believes that to have a good team you must compete as a team and work together, which he tries to do every year. He also teaches the wrestlers to compete in a positive manner, and to work very hard which is the key to a successful season. Not only were the boys never beaten by any class C or D team, but they were the Central 8 Conference and District C-7 Champions as well. Individual school records were set in the high jump, pole vault, long jump, triple jump, and the 300 int. hurdles. With the leadership of the three seniors — Chad Conkling, Rob Johansen, and Rusty Dunn, each athlete had the attitude that hard work would pay off — and the hard work that was put into practices paid off. Many individual class records were also set or tied. At the State Meet in Omaha, Osceola had two medal winners. David Andeit placed fifth in the 3200 Meter Run, and Rob Johansen won first place in the triple jump. The track team started out very well, and continued to improve throughout the season. Although they did not reach some of their team goals, that was due to illness and injuries, and not to the girls themselves. Everyone that contributed to team points deserves a pat on the back.
