The 1983 girls' track team was very small, but they made up for their size with determination. The team worked well together and for the most part, everyone got along super. The girls’ team was coached by Mr. Jensen and Mr. Vant. With a lot of support given from the track mom’’ — Mrs. Jensen. The team was very strong this year in the hurdles. Deb Theis and Vicki Jones added a lot of points to the team scores in this event. Vicki also made it to the State Meet. The high points of the season will always be remembered. Deb LeSuer. after 3 years of waiting for a medal, placed 5th at the District Meet in the Discus, with a throw of 96 11”. Debbie Burritt ran a very impressive 1600 meters. And the 400 relay ended the season with their best time, only one second away from the school record. Mr. Jensen and Mr. Vant are both looking toward the future with promise. Osceola Good Samaritan Center The 1983 Boys Track team proved to be the most successful sports program of the year. The team ended up with a 6-1 record in Duals and Triangulars, and finished second in Conference. They lost 9 Seniors from 1982 who scored many points, but countered this loss with strong performances by the underclassmen. The team did not get many first place finishes, but instead the team loaded up points by placing many people in the second, third and fourth positions. The successful track program was rewarded for their accomplishments in the recent years by receiving new track uniforms. These new uniforms made out of a silky-nylon fabric proved to be very cool this season because Mother Nature would not often cooperate on meet days. Many meets were held in snowy or rainy conditions or temperatures below 50°F until the final week of the season. The only record-breaking performance this season was by the 400 meter relay team of Chris Jensen, Joe Gabriel, Dion Buhl, and Trent Larson with a time of 47.3, shattering the old record of 48.6. The team was honored to have Darrell Andelt go to State. Darrell, for the second consecutive year, broke the school record for the 1600m at the state meet. His time of 4:35.62 put him in the top rankings of the boys in class C.
