Athletic teams were small in numbers but SPORTS were high in spirit. With enrollment dropping, classes were smaller than usual, but the 23 graduating SENIORS gave a lot to OHS. With a smaller school, it sometimes seemed hard to get enough students interested in the activities, but EVENTS were thriving and OHS students were a busy, dedicated group. But as always, it's PEOPLE that take small things and make them into great things. We have assembled this small package — so you, the PEOPLE of OHS can reflect on 1982-83 with fond memories. We hope that inside these 72 pages you find many great sports, great seniors, great i events, and great people. Because ... Great Things Come in Small Packages. The 1982-83 Written Pub. The beginning ot a new philosophy towards teamwork by Coach Ramsbottom pushed the excitement level to new heights, and with the help of an always encouraging Pep Club that worked hard, the Bulldogs in '82 played together. A very young, inexperienced team suited up 30 athletes for the tough uphill battle in '82; compared to numbers in the high 40's in previous years. This proved to be the start of a tough season, but one in which the 'Dogs probably played together as a Team more successfully than in previous years past. Finally, nearing the end of the season the Bulldogs put it all together for a super team effort over Fullerton. Inexperienced, small and young, the players stood tough the entire season and truly felt the efforts of a coaching staff that never gave up on them, as players, or men. Bulldog team members receiving All-Conference and Honorable Mention status this season were: Trent Larson — QB, Kent Johansen — HB, Darin Sterup — TE, DE, Curt Erickson — OG. David Bur-ritt — DT, and Rusty Dunn — LB. Trent Larson and Rusty Dunn also were awarded Honorable Mention spots on the AP All-State Football team for 1982. Proof of this was apparent if you ever happened to pass by their locker room before a game. The Varsity team would gather together and chant, ya, ya, ya, ya, ya!! This was the Lady Bulldog's way of psyching up themselves and psyching out their opponent. It was also a lot of fun. Cindy Christensen, Jr.; replied, We got pretty bizarre . . . Deb LeSuer used to put us under hypnosis. It was really a joke, but while we were under”, we concentrated on how we would serve, set, spike and bump perfectly. It helped calm our nerves. The Junior Varsity though, didn't do anything special to prepare for a game, but none the less, they tried to calm each other down before the games. Jean Sigler, Jr.; says, We give each other pats on the back and try to build confidence. It's a lot of Be calm, we can do it!” The Freshmen mostly rely on one person to get them psyched up for a game. Deb Langer, Fr.; said, We re usually too nervous to get psyched up for a game. But Christy Ericson usually gets pretty weird before the games. This makes us laugh and we really loosen up. All in all, the team helped each other out a lot to prepare for the games. This was important to help give them a positive attitude and make the team feel better about itself. Despite the losing season, they had fun and didn't look at it as a waste of time. Varsity members. The Bulldogs had 2 open weight classes the entire year, which had an effect on team scoring at meets. Many wrestlers placed consistently at tournaments, with nine members placing at the Conference meet, and Rusty Dunn, Bryan Cliffords, and Thad Fitch placing at Districts. Thad placed high enough to attend the State Wrestling Tournament in Lincoln. Unfortunately, Thad did not make it past his first match. The team had two graduating Seniors, Dave Burritt and Student Manager, LaDonna Reisdorff. Wrestlers voted for their teammates on the following awards: Most Valuable — Thad Fitch, Most Improved — Thad Fitch, All Hustle — Rusty Dunn and Team Co-Captains — Dave Burritt and Rusty Dunn. Managers for the Bulldog Team were Beverly Bryan and LaDonna Reisdorff. Coaching the Bulldog wrestlers were Jon Habben and Mitch Coffin. 16 Simplot Soilbuilders Far left, Todd Wheeler has control over his opponent. Left. Right, Andy Monson goes up for the jump ball in a game against East Butler. The 1982-198J boys basketball season got underway with their first game against East Butler. Although the Bulldogs won their first game, they just couldn't seem to get back on the track for the rest of the season. Darin Sterup and Kent Johansen, the lone seniors, contributed much to the play along with many underclassmen. Although the team worked hard, their inexperience showed. With no lettermen returning from the year before, the players had a stiff challenge ahead of them. The season record shows how many games were won and lost, but it does not measure things such as the will to win and hard work. This year's team did continue to work hard even though the record itself was discouraging. In that sense, the season was successful. Every athlete that continued to have the will to win, had a successful season. There were a lot of underclassmen that gained valuable experience and that experience will be helpful when the season rolls around again next year. 20 Osceola Veterinary Hospital Left.Junior Varsity team members, (standing. 1 to r): Coach Ramsbottom, Allen Sculley, Bob Nitch. Deb Theis, and Deb LeSuer. The 1983 girls' track team was very small, but they made up for their size with determination. The team worked well together and for the most part, everyone got along super. The girls’ team was coached by Mr. Jensen and Mr. Vant. With a lot of support given from the track mom’’ — Mrs. Jensen. The team was very strong this year in the hurdles. Deb Theis and Vicki Jones added a lot of points to the team scores in this event. Vicki also made it to the State Meet. The high points of the season will always be remembered. Deb LeSuer. after 3 years of waiting for a medal, placed 5th at the District Meet in the Discus, with a throw of 96 11”. Debbie Burritt ran a very impressive 1600 meters. And the 400 relay ended the season with their best time, only one second away from the school record. Mr. Jensen and Mr. Vant are both looking toward the future with promise. The team was very young, and only 3 Seniors are leaving. 22 Nahrstedts At left, 1983 Girls Track Team: (Sitting. 1 to r : Head Coach. Mr. Jensen. Jean Sigler. Ann Kucera. Becky Theis. Osceola Good Samaritan Center The 1983 Boys Track team proved to be the most successful sports program of the year. The team ended up with a 6-1 record in Duals and Triangulars, and finished second in Conference. They lost 9 Seniors from 1982 who scored many points, but countered this loss with strong performances by the underclassmen. The team did not get many first place finishes, but instead the team loaded up points by placing many people in the second, third and fourth positions. The successful track program was rewarded for their accomplishments in the recent years by receiving new track uniforms. These new uniforms made out of a silky-nylon fabric proved to be very cool this season because Mother Nature would not often cooperate on meet days. Many meets were held in snowy or rainy conditions or temperatures below 50°F until the final week of the season. The only record-breaking performance this season was by the 400 meter relay team of Chris Jensen, Joe Gabriel, Dion Buhl, and Trent Larson with a time of 47.3, shattering the old record of 48.6. The team was honored to have Darrell Andelt go to State. Darrell, for the second consecutive year, broke the school record for the 1600m at the state meet. His time of 4:35.62 put him in the top rankings of the boys in class C. Clockwise from far left: Darell Andelt jams to the Walkman while on the track bus. Trent Larson sprints to the finish. It would be even more fun if we were winning a few games. Sean Gabel said, It s been good experience and it s been fun. The rest of the Freshmen boys were working hard on J.V. to try to have a successful season. The girl’s had to do such embarrassing activities as; singing the school song, and dressing like babies. They received their Spirit Club sweaters at the end of the week. Christy Ericson commented that I thought the initiation was fun. Debbie Langer said, It was really great and should be kept up in years to come. Once again trying a new activity the Freshmen bounced into Basketball. There were nineteen Junior band members this year. In winter sports, sixteen people made up the basketball and wrestling teams. To finance their Junior-Senior Prom, the Junior class sold cookies at noon and had cake raffles during basketball games. The cheerleaders would then lead the students with a cheer and a skit to show them school spirit. Skits many times poked fun at the teachers, coaches, or even the girls themselves. At Christmas time some of the basketball players were made up to be reindeers. Six OHS guys got pies thrown in their faces. The teachers also got to show their spirit by doing a very funny echoing skit. The third day brought out all the punk rockers. Many weird color combinations, like purple and green were mixed together. Many people also slicked their hair back; some even dyed their hair purple! Twin day was the fourth day. Kent Johansen and Darin Sterup won the twin contest. They had all the men looking twice. Sandee Thelen and Penny Watts were Aunt Jemima twins. The final day, was hat, shades and color day. Students were adorned in everything from cowboy hats to hats that lit up. All types of sunglasses were worn to cut down on the glare from all the bright orange that so many people wore. Although many students and teachers took part in Spirit Week it just wasn't enough to win against Stromsburg. Below, Curt Ericson hates preppies! Fat below. Besides cropping pictures, writing articles, drawing layouts, and designing headlines, the staff also wrote and performed a short skit at an assembly for annual sales.
