The year began with something new for them — early morning band practices. Many students were also involved in high school athletics which kept them at the school until all hours. These two things made for a very exciting and long day for many. Later in the year, a group of freshmen were honored as being chosen for prom servers. The freshmen year was filled with many new experiences, which led to many memorable moments. 21 Great things come in small packages! They were Mrs. Erhart, Mr. Ernst, Miss Fraver, Miss Keane, and Mr. Ramsbottom. Three of these being coaches, many changes came about in our athletic program. Even though all five were probably a bit nervous in September, they hoped they would be accepted and fit in with the school system. By May, each one had done this very well. Meanwhile, the rest of the faculty was back to the same old thing. Such as Mr. Vant talking to his poster, Mr. Theis and Mr. Habben keeping up their reputation as being “tough, and Mr. Heck trying to find out who pulled the fire alarms on the seniors last day. All faculty members worked together to help each student at Osceola High School work to their full potential. Each teacher was always available for extra help if a student needed it. At the end of the year, besides receiving a quality education, most students were affected by some teacher in some way. Mr. Smolik’s comment on the marching was, It was a very successful year. There was cooperation with the kids that paid off in the end.” 30 Band Travels Highway to the Top Pictured at the top is the marching band. Next, the drum majorette, Jane Jarmin. is pictured with the trophies received tor superior ratings at both Harvest of Harmony and Pershing. The stage band, pictured at the bottom left, received a superior rating at contest. Trumpet Trio, which includes Mike Bryan, Tami Hofbauer. and Kenny Stachura, is at the bottom right. The marching band's show consisted of four routines, a different song for each. The first song, Championship, was a precision drill. The next song was Pepsi Spirit” in which the band formed many geometrical shapes. Tonight” was then played while the band made a circle. The last song was the hardest of all and it required a lot of work. This one was called “Let It Be Me.” The routine was a bugle corps style that required a very precise step. The highlight of the routine, judging by the crowd's applause, was the marching backwards. The show as a whole was exciting because of the various movements, steps, and music. 31 Band Is Honored The band and Beverly Schott marched off to another victory when they competed at Harvest of Harmony. Bev represented the band as queen candidate for Harvest of Harmony and did a great job. She ended up second runner-up. Everyone was very proud of her. Bev's comment on her experience was, It was something I’ll never forget. I'll cherish the memories and the friends I made. The band was the only band out of 11 bands in Class C that received a superior rating. It was a very successful day that will be remember by everyone. Pictured above are the drill team members. Shari Gossett also contributed some of her own pictures. Without their pictures our annual would not be complete. Special recognition should go to Bev Schott, Sheila Boden, Deb Nehjahr, Jane Jarmin, Julie Jarmin, and Darcie Becker for contributing hours of hard work after the school year was over. Many successful pep rallies were put on by the cheerleaders, often with the help of the student body and faculty. During the winter sports season, the Spirit Club was kept busy with the many events, but they always found time to fulfill their duties. The Spirit Club officers of 1980-1981 were: Tami Hofbauer, Pres.; Julie Jar-min, V.P.; LaDonna Reisdorff, Sec.; Terri Johansen, Treas.; Susan Jones, Hist. With that win, we were looking forward to a winning season. Unfortunately, our next win wasn’t until we met up with Clarks in our last regular season game. Our record of 2-8 doesn’t show the effort put forth by the team. We started out with a new coach this year and we knew it must have taken a great deal of hard work and patience for Miss Keane and our assistant coach, Miss Mclnnis, to put up with us and keep us together as a team. At the end of the season Bev Schott was named to the All-Conference Second Team. Lead by senior letterwinners Mike Bryan, Troy Dowling, Dean Runquist, and Pat Wieseman, the team was able to achieve a winning dual season for the fifth consecutive time. Dowling, Wieseman, and junior, David Bryan represented the team at the state tournament. Jeff Wheeler and Larry LeSuer, juniors, placed fifth and sixth at the district tournament. Wieseman tied or set nine team records while Runquist and D. Bryan each added one. All records are now on display in the wrestling gym, thanks to a memorial to Carl Wieseman. Wieseman was named Most Valuable, co-honorary captain with Mike Bryan, and the recipient of the All-Hustle Award. This is something we had done many times in the past. We started off the season with a big win over East Butler. This being the first time we ever played in overtime and coming out the victor gave us confidence. We continued the season with four loses but some pretty good play, anyway. We then had two wins to carry us into the conference tournaments. Here we did better than ever before and came out with 4th place. Then we closed out the season with a revenge win over Silver Creek and a disappointing lose to Fullerton in Districts. We say goodbye to six seniors: Bev Schott, Joyce Gabel, Kris Mon-son, Sheila Boden, Bonnie Nitsch, and Tami Hofbouer. Looking forward to next year we see many promising underclassmen and a lot of determination. All-Conference choices include. 1st team — Kris Monson: 2nd team — Sheila Boden; and Honorable Mention — Joyce Gabel. Kris and Tami attempt a trap against a Lakeview Viking. The 1980-81 basketball season ended with a disappointing 2-13 record. The bulldogs won their regular season opener, as well as the final game of the regular season. The word that could describe the bulldogs misfortune was inconsistency. Seldom could the cagers put together a complete game. On the positive side, improvement was seen by the end of the year and much experience was gained by the underclassmen, which should help for next year. All conference choices were: Tim Peterson — 1st team, and Dan Kucera — Honorable Mention. Dan goes up for another lay-up. 58 BB Team Moves on Despite Disappointments Jr. Varsity: (I to r): Brian Jinright (St. Mgr ), Kent Johansen. Chris Hofbauer, Tim Wheeler. Mark Gabel. The boys’ track team, under the leadership of two new coaches, Tom Ramsbottom and Ron Ernst did well sending two boys, Dan Kucera and Dave Bryan to the State meet. The team was young this year having only one senior, Pat Wieseman. The remainder of the team were mostly first year members. The boys worked very hard and learned that track isn't easy. With the help of Mr. Jensen and Mr. Vant, the year progressed smoothly and the girls put many miles behind them preparing for the District meet. Although none of the girls qualified for the state meet, many individual goals were met and the freshman learned that they really could run. The team bids farewell to six seniors: Bev, Kris, Bonnie, Joyce, and Mgrs. Tami, and Terri. These girls provided leadership and encouragement for the younger girls. The Valedictorian, Salutatorian, and Reverend Anderson all spoke on the class motto which was: To live your life in your own way, to reach the goals you have set for yourself, to be the you that you want to be ... that is success.” Vocal selections were performed by Cathy Coffin and a select choir. The class chose Burgandy and Cream as their colors, and the Rose as their flower. Class sponsors were Mr. Andelt and Mr. Hayes.
