3 “I am not a teacher: only a fellow travellor of whom you asked the way. 1 pointed ahead-ahead of myself as well as you.” G. Of course there were the new faces in the crowd, but the familiar ones were to be found in the familiar haunts around the building: Mrs. Chapman submerged under three feet of essays, Mr. Habben belaboring some “fascinating” govermental problem, Mr. Smolik barking orders in the predawn light of autumn, Mr. Andelt teasing some “innocent young thing” in the corridor. In the late summer the teachers opened their doors prepared to sell their wares to those who cared to buy. Someone learned how to sew a skirt, to bake a pie, to build a cabinet or speak a foreign language. There were also those who chose not to buy, but merely “window-shopped” throughout the term. Either way, it was the best bargain in town. Pictured Upper Left: Superintendent Kenneth E. Sipes, Principal Michael Burger, Secretary Louise Wheeler. Five players named all conference, one all state, four others honorable mention all state. Three months of sweat turned sweet success as the Bulldog machine built up steam. The word seemed to be “power” as the team buried the opposition, victory after victory. Speed, strength, desire: the “Orange Crush put it all together in ’78. Coach Chapman, it was later learned, would leave the following spring after achieving the principle objective—make the playoffs. Also gone would be Wieseman. Day, and Watts: Tonniges, Jones, and Johansen. The Bulldogs will remember them as the team that went “state”, the players mentioned above as the senior leaders of one of the finest football “powerhouses” in Osceola records. We thank them all for leaving us with a legacy of winning. 21 Seniors: T. Johansen, T. Day, L. Wieseman, S. Davis, S. Watts, D. Tonniges, M. Jones. Back Row: K. Soli, N. Lemp, L. Watts, M. Leimser, J. Gabel, G. Schmidt, Jones. Coached by Lori Ibarolle and Audrey Schropfer, the “lady bulldogs” showed a lot of ability this year and ended the season with a 3-9 record. A vote at the end of the season showed that Joan Hayes was the Nervy Server, Brenda Bryan the Spunky Spiker, Brenda Peterson the Better Setter, Nancy Lemp the Most Valuable Player, and LuAnne Watts Ms. 110%. The twelve member junior varsity team ended with a record of 4-5 which gives us high hopes for the 79-80 season. Voted outstanding junior varsity player was Brenda Peterson and most improved junior varsity player was given to Debbie Neu-jahr. The unexperienced freshman gave a good show with a 3-5 record. Paige Gustafson and Crystal Leimser were voted outstanding freshman and most improved freshman. 23 It was a strange season. As the coach put it, ours was a year of transition. So many games decided in the last minute, and so many tough breaks at the end. Osceola gave a lot of people trouble, and when the so-called “experts” seeded the Bulldogs sixth in the conference tourney, we took third not bad considering the two teams ahead of us went on the hard-boards of Lincoln in March. The seniors played hard, and the likes of Johnson, Vcelik, Wieseman, and Zelasney will be missed. As will the other seniors who contributed so much throughout the season: Watts, Davis, Klaus. None of them gave up, and their fine attitude will carry over to the guys on the way up. The junior varsity came on very strong at the end of the year, and it would appear that the talent and enthusiasm of these younger players speaks to the bright future of Osceloa basketball. The tough schedule handed the team several disappointing losses. Indirectly, however, each player had something to gain. Teamwork, effort, spirit, and fellowship thrived with sincerety and enthusiasm. Several highlights throughout the season kept the cagers’ morale at an expected level. Beating Clarks and setting a school record for the most points scored (54) and getting Joyce Gabel on the Second Team All-Conference team were two season highspots. With the graduation of just one senior, the Lady Bulldogs are anticipating a more successful season coupled with a more experienced and TALLER!? team. 27 Front: P. Kresha, T. Bachenberg, D. Though inexperience was a main problem for the team, the year proved successful. Tim Bachenberg, Tracy Day, Pat Wieseman, and Joe Graham represented Osceola at the State Wrestling Tournament. Tracy and Tim finished fourth in their weight classes, the highest any Osceola wrestlers had placed since 1977 when Rick Johnson placed sixth. At the end of the year, special recognition went to Tracy Day and Joe Graham who were chosen as Most Valuable Wrestlers. Other awards went to Tracy Day and Duane Tonniges, Honorary Team Captains: Paul Hennings, Pat Kresha, and Dean Runquist, Most Improved; and Tim Bachenberg; All-Hustle Award. Student Managers were Tracy Walgren and Tim Hofbauer. The statistician was Tracy Walgren and the publicity was handled by Paul Hennings. 28 SENIORS: Tracy Day, Duane Tonniges, and Paul Hennings. Duane Tonniges, Gene Schacher, Troy Johnson, Lyndon Wieseman, David Bryan, Corey Becker, Brad Hussman, and Coach Vrooman. This year’s track season at Osceola, came off as one of the best in years, as the girl’s team won first place in the Goldenrod Conference for the third consecutive year, and the boys had their best season in recent years. The girls placed high in every meet they attended, and qualified five e-vents for the state meet. Senior Bernie Nitsch qualified in the 440. and sophomore Joyce Gabel qualified for state in the 880 and the mile. The mile relay and last year’s state champion two mile relay also qualified. At the state meet the two-mile relay placed fifth, although they had improved upon their state record time of a year ago. Joyce Gabel also placed at state, as she earned sixth place in the mile. While the girl’s team found their strength in the running events, the boys found their strength in the field. At almost every meet they went to, the boys found that they could count on three seniors, Lyndon Wiesentan, Troy Johnson, and Duane Tonniges, to place in the discus. They were also virtually assured of high placings in the discus, shot put, long jump, and triple jump, from the “decathlon man” Lyndon Wiesentan. At the District C-5 meet, Osceola had a dissappointing finish as only Lyndon Wiesentan qualified for the state meet with a discus throw of 142’ 4”. Troy Johnson also had a shot at the state meet in the shot put, but his throw of 47’ 8” fell short of qualifying. After a year without a pep club, it was decided one was needed to boost the spirit of not only the athletic teams, but the whole school. Under the leadership of Mrs. Chapman and Miss Waldmann, and with the help of Miss Ehmen, the cabinet formulated a constitution and reorganized. New uniforms were introduced: an orange and white rugby sweater with painter pants or overalls. The addition of boys was also new this year. Activities sponsored by the Spirit Club were a carnival, the planning of the Athletic Honors Night, and the completion of the murals in the gym. 32 Varsity Cheerleaders: Denise Triba, Joan Hayes, Kim Stromberg, Carla Schott, and Luanne Watts. goin’ places, doin’ things All this past year, the cheerleaders have been going places and doing things. The year started the way every year does for Osceola cheerleaders, with the squad going to the National Cheerleader’s Association Camp at the Nebraska Wesleyan University Campus in June. While at the camp, the squad earned three superior and one excellent ribbon as well as the coveted spirit stick”. Once the athletic seasons started, the cheerleaders were on the go again, cheering the football and volleyball teams on. As the football team qualified for the state tourney, the cheerleaders were on the go again, this time to Grant, seven hours to the west. The winter athletic season brought a change for the cheerleaders, as they switched to a new style of uniforms. The cheerleaders were doing other things too, as they helped raise money for the March of Dimes and took on other projects. Usually, the cheerleaders finish their duties come spring, however, this year’s squad was selected from the nine Golden-rod Conference squads to cheer for the GRC All-Stars in their annual game against the Crossroads Conference All-Stars. JV Cheerleaders: Sheila Boden, Deb Neujahr, and Bonnie Nitsch. 33 . . . marching at sunrise!! Frostbit Toes March to Excellence The marching band once again set out for another year of early morning practices and dedicated hard work for the future performances. The performance began by the band entering on the field to “March of the Conquistadors” doing a precision drill. After a short pause, the band continued into “Tonight” doing a variety of circle maneuvers. The performance was ended with a precision drill which included counter-marches and the slow-step to “Salute to Britain.” The support and affirmative votes of the community proved to be worthwhile to lead the band into the performances. Due to the fact that Columbus Days and the Harvest of Harmony fell on the same day, the band chose to travel to Grand Island where they received an excellent rating. The band finished the year by traveling to Pershing where they received a trophy for twenty years participation along with a trophy for a superior rating. The band chose Lori Coffin (at right) as their queen candidate who received Miss Congeniality and was first runner-up. 36 BAND COUNCIL: Top row: Nancy Boden, Connie Girard, row: Brenda Christensen, Deb Neujahr, and Joan Hayes. Joan Hayes and Tracy Day got their tickets to paradise on October 6 when they were crowned 1978-79 homecoming King and Queen. The royal court included King Tracy, Queen Joan, first attendents Kim Stromberg and Lyndon Wieseman, second attendents Cathy Cerny and Scott Watts, flower girl, Missy Girard, and crown bearer, Brian Carlson. At half time of the evening football game the O.H.S. band played a medley of songs while the king and queen were announced. At the evening dance “Raven” provided the entertainment. The evening was topped off by a big win over Henderson. 44 I “Comics” was the theme of the 1978’-79’ homecoming parade. The winners of the Senior Division floats were Seniors, first place: 7th grade, second place; and 8th grade, third place. Winners of the Junior Division were 1st grade, first place; 3rd grade, second place; and 4th grade, third place. 45 STUDENT COUNCIL: top row: Tim Wheeler, Joel Carlson, Debbie Neujahr, Lisa Johnston, Barb Cerny. Tony Kresha, Mike Klaus, Doug Sterup. Seated: Susan Watts, Quiet Year for Council In contrast to years past, when the council would be involved with such things as curriculum development, this year’s members had to deal with less serious issues. As always, it was the duty of the council to sponsor the homecoming dance. With some great music provided by “Night Flight”, it took very little time to get the night rolling. Everyone has some fond memories of that late autumn event. It was also through the council that students with special skills were asked to instruct some minicourses. Paul Hennings, for one, taught a class for stutterbugs, while Duane Tonniges offered his expertise to the neophytes of the art of welding. President of this year’s council was Tony Kresha. Barb Cerny served as vice president, and Mike Klaus was secretary. Our nucleus!? 47 March of Dimes King and Queen candidates for i 979 were Deraid Johnson and Barb Cerny. During the year, the group held many blanket tosses at basketball games and also sold home-made cookies to students during the lunch hour. Even the cheerleaders got into the act by holding a pie throwing contest. A big thanks goes out to everyone who helped raise money and also to Shari Augustine, the county teen-chairman for all her help and support. The climax of the MOD campaign was at the dance held in early March where Deraid and Barb were crowned 1979 Polk County March of Dimes King and Queen. This year’s FHA chapter held many different things to raise money for the March of Dimes. They sold home-made cookies over the lunch hour and they also held cake raffles at various basketball games. The members are selected by an anonymous committee each semester. This year’s officers for the NHS were President Bernie Nitsch, Vice Presi-dent-Steve Davis, Secretary—Lori Coffin, and Treasurer Mark Jones. Each year, the Honor Society selects two of its members to apply for National Honor Society Scholarships. This year Steve Davis and Bernie Nitsch were selected to apply. National Honor Society 0-Club The O-Club, as every one knows, is the letterwinner’s club, and anyone who wins an athletic letter is eligible to join. This year the O-Club sponsored the Conference boy’s basketball and wrestling tournaments, which were held in the Osceola gym. The group also ran the grade school track meet which is held every spring for grades one through six. The O-Club sponsers for this year, were Pete Chapman, Lori Iberollc, and Curt Carlson; 49 Mike Finds Success with New Format The 1978-79 school year found the MIKE staff busy with changes and new ideas. Uppermost on the staffs minds was to rid themselves of old debts left from former years. One way they tried to amend this was switching printing companies. While this was much less expensive in cost, it resulted in a lot more work for the staff. Each member was assigned his own beat which they had to cover. All of this hard work resulted in an entertaining and informative paper. Editors: Deraid Johnson and Steve Davis Co-Editors: Tony Kresha and Bernie Nitsch 50 MIKE STAFF: B. Nitsch, L. Wieseman, K. Ransom Jr.) caricatures the happiness of the many groups at O.H.S.. Recognition is given to Leann Johansen, Sue Rempe, and Mel Peterson for achieving their quotas of pages completed. Special thanks go out to Barb Cerny and Paul Hennings, who went beyond their quotas to complete the work of others. Also, a word of appreciation is forwarded to Anderson’s Photography who supplied the staff with a marvelous new camera, and all the developing work throughout the year. The efforts of these people, combined with those of Mr. Marquart, were culminated in the printing of the ’78-’97 BULLDOG. The play was about the Pennywinner family who thinks, speaks, and centers their lives a-round sports. Mr. Pennywinner, who was coach of the Frogs, became surprised when he found out his daughter, Peggy, replaced Buzz, his son in the big game against the Nomads. The Juniors enjoyed performing the play, which was a big success. “You, young man, must be the outraged party. “lily Langtry has consented to be my bride! “West of Pecos'y “West of Pecos” was the title of this year’s senior class play. The play was the story of Judge Roy Bean (Paul Hennings), a domineering frontier justice, and his love for an actress he had never met-Lily Langtry (Lori Coffin). Judge Bean threatens to hang one of the local boys, Orin Powers (Mike Vcelik), for shooting a horse thief. Only Cayo Claiborne (Deraid Johnson) can save the day for Orin, by fetching Lily from San Antonio. West of Pecos was directed by Deb Ehmen. Drama Club always works in obscurity. You know, theyre that weird bunch that stands in front of folks, knees a’knock-in' just toblow a little wind!? Well, it seems that they actually get awards for that sort of thing. For instance. Deraid and Tim took “firsts in conference. Later on in districts Lori, Deraid, and the duet of Deraid Lyndon all received “ones” in their respective categories. And at state, Lori, rated a “two”, as did the forementioned duet, while the silver-tongued weather man not only chalked up a “one” but a fourth overall in state competition! That’s tellin- them. Dude. Other highlights: Conference achievers were Lori and Carolyn in poetry : Steve, Tony. Lori, Connie, and Denise in oral interpretation of drama: Mike and Deb in original public address: Tony in oral interpretation of prose: District achievers were Deb and Mike in original public address; Tim rated well in extemporaneous; and Steve, Tony, Denise, Connie performed equally well in oral interpretation of drama. Somehow, the vision of palm trees, and ocean breezes eased the winter agonies of blowing snow and confusing conjugations. Half of the club would participate in a journey to Mexico City, Taxco, and Acapulco. There would be many memories: the silver shops, the flower bedecked skiffs of Lake Texcoco, the multi-colored brilliance of the Mexican Folkloric Ballet, the Thieve’s Market, Chapultepec Park, the ruins of the temples of the Aztecs at Teotihuacan, the white sands of Acapulco (and the cliffdivers outlined by torchlight), the beautiful hotels, the discos, ad infinitum. Though the “viaje a Mexico” was the highlight, the club again enjoyed several evenings during the year preparing the spicy foods of the Mexican table, and also shared an April evening at the Seven Knights Restaurant trying out their rendition of enchiladas, burritos, bunuelos, etc. 55 Fantasy Island—Prom 1979 May 5, 1979, was the date for this year’s prom with the theme “Point of No Return is Fantasy Island” The procession walked through a tunnel of dark blue paper with silver stars. This lead them across a bridge made of wooden planks. The servers put on a skit dealing with the theme of Fantasy Island. Everyone enjoyed the meal which was catered by Wunderlich’s of Columbus. The highlight of the evening was a dance by MIRAGE. The speaker of the evening was Mrs. Helgren 56 57 Banquet enjoyed by everyone. All Smiles . . . What shall he tell that son? “Life is hard: be steel; be a rock. And this might stand him for the storms and serve him for humdrum and monotony and guide him amid sudden betrayals and tighten him for slack moments. “Life is soft loam; be gentle; go easy.” .And this too might serve him. Brutes have, been gentled where lashes failed. The growtli of a frail flower in a path up has sometimes shattered and split a rock. A tough will counts. So does desire. So does a soft rich wanting. Without rich wanting nothing arrives. Tell him too much money has killed men and left them dead years before burial: and quest of lucre beyond a few easy needs has twisted good enough men sometimes into dry thwarted worms. Tell him time as a stuff can be wasted. Tell him to be a fool every so often and to have no shame over having been a fool yet learning something out of every folly hoping to repeat none of the cheap follies thus arriving at intimate understanding of a world numbering many fools. Tell him to be alone often and get at himself and above all tell him no lies about himself, whatever the white lies and protective fronts he may use amongst other people. Tell him solitude is creative if he is strong and the final decisions are made in silent rooms. Tell him to be different from other people if it comes natural and easy being different. Let him have lazy days seeking liis motives. Let him seek deep for where he is a born natural. Then he may understand Shakespeare and the Wright brothers. Pasteur, Pavlov, Michael Faraday and free imaginations bringing changes into a world resenting change. He will be lonely enough to have time for the work he knows as his own.
