Faculty Offers New Courses Last year there was a North Central Evaluation done on the school. This evaluation, completed every ten years, is a measurement of the needs and potential of the total school system. The evaluators stated that the curriculum was, in essence, good but could be improved through more deliberate evaluation and planning of the K-12 program. As a result of this self-study, several new ideas have been introduced for ’77-’78. The schedule is more flexible this year as compared to the years before because of the variety of classes offered. World of Work, Drama, Writing Lab, Anatomy, and others were all new classes added to this year’s curriculum. The addition of these classes now makes it possible for the students to be more selective, and they can include more classes of their own preference. This past year’s routine began with the bandsmen marching to the song, “St. James Infirmary,” forming a diamond. A drum cadence followed with all other instrument players doing different movements. The band then left the field by performing a counter-march and slow-step playing “Spirit of a New Nation.” In the marching contests, the band’s efforts went by without too much concern from the judges. At Harvest of Harmony they received the street marching trophy, but were given a good rating in field competition. They received a good rating at Columbus Days. The band ended their year at Pershing being awarded a good rating. Another honor came to the Osceola marching band when our Harvest of Harmony Queen candidate, Kim Boden (pictured to the right), was chosen first runner-up. A band boosters organization was started and sponsored selling cheese and sausage to raise money for new uniforms. 32 Back row: Paul Hennings, Historian; Tim Bachen- Vice-President;and Denise Triba, Secretary-Trea- burg, Deb Neujahr, Pat Schott, President; and Jo- surer. Precious and Few—Homecoming 77-78 Seniors selling carnations with orange O’s in the center, cars filled with nervous Homecoming candidates, floats piled with shouting kids and the Osceola band playing their favorite songs, that’s what Homecoming at Osceola High School is all about. Homecoming 1977-’78 was held on a bright sunny autum day on October 14. The theme for the parade was “Movies”. The winners of the Senior Division were: First place, 7th grade-“Gus Will Hoof’Em For The Tigers”; Second place, 8th grade-“Black Friday For The Tigers”; Third place, Sophomores—“Star Wars—May The Force Be With You To Beat Silver Creek”. Other floats entered in the Senior Division were: Freshman—“Sink The Tigers”; Juniors-“Roots Slave ’Em; Seniors-“Bulldogs Lived On Tiger Flesh”. The winners for the Junior Division were: First place, 4th grade-“White Wash The Tigers”;Second place, Sth grade “Homecoming With The Walton’s”.Third place, 2nd grade— “Go Bulldogs Rise Against Tigers Great Pumpkin”. The gala march around the square moved south to the football field that evening. The march continued as the Bulldogs trampled the Silver Creek tigers reasuring us at half time, that a victory would be the outcome for the Osceola Bulldogs. As the team ran to the bus at half time the Queen candidates entered onto the field in a convertible. The King candidates walked from the bus out to the field as the girls were escorted out of the car. The O.H.S. band played a medley of songs as the King and Queen were announced. King and Queen for the 1977-’78 Homecoming were: Randy Reese and Jean Soukup. First Attendants: Todd Hiemer and JoAnn Schacher. Second Attendants: Eric Henderson and Peggy Watts. Assisting in the crowning of the King and Queen were: flower girl, Amy Kropatsch and ring bearer, Jeremy Anderson. The Bulldogs smeared the Silver Creek Tigers 54-0. Everyone then headed back up to the old auditorium, where the coronation was reenacted before the dance began. The theme for the Homecoming dance was decided by the junior class. They chose the theme “Precious and Few” and the ceremony was trimmed in the colors burgundy and pink. It was a successful day which will be long remembered. 40 Royal Court: Standing -DeVon Carlson and Peggy Tindall. Ring bearer Jeremy Anderson, King Randy the Queen Jean, flower girl Amy Kropatsch. Second Attendants: Peggy Watts and Eric Henderson. First Attendants: JoAnn Schacher and Todd Hiemer. Boy, I wish we could have been escorted in a car! Smile, you’re on candid camera! Reese, Sponsor Mr. Theis, L. Watts, J. Graham, J. Student Council Takes Over Without the Pep Club, we’ve got to do it all! Student Council had a lot of work ahead of them this year as they assumed the responsibility of planning the Homecoming festivities since there was no Pep Club to make the necessary arrangements. Homecoming 1977 was a big success thanks to the Student Council. Another activity sponsored by this group was a Sweetheart Dance held on February 18, with the band NIGHT FLIGHT providing the music. It was a fun-filled evening enjoyed by all. 43 Our FHA Chapter has been very busy and enthusiastic this year. Our new sponsor is Miss Schropfer. The quilt is finally finished and was raffled off. Scott Conkling was the lucky winner. The group sponsored a cake raffle for the March of Dimes, held a Thanksgiving dinner;also had Christmas and sledding parties. A new activity was helping the residents at the Good Samaritan Home participate in the Rock-N-Roll Jamboree to raise money for the Heart Fund. In the spring. Miss Schropfer, Jolene Gabel, Amy Johnson, Darla Sterup, and Melanie Oquist attended the FHA HFRO State Leadership Conference in Lincoln, and they learned many new ideas and activities to promote the Future Homemakers of America organization. FHA officers for 1977-78 were; President—Melanie Oquist, Vice President— Amy Johnson, Secretary Darla Sterup, and Treasurer-Carmen Schott. Back row; C. Schott, P. Lisko, P. Potter, S. Schott, P. Campaign Representing OHS as the March of Dimes King and Queen Candidates for 1978 were Scott Conkling and Melanie Oquist. During the year, they held many blanket tosses at basketball games, and collected money from businesses and door to door. A new money-making project was selling home-made sugar cookies to students and faculty members during the noon hour. Osceola had fifteen students to participate in the annual MOD Walk-A-Thon, Bike-A-Thon. A big thank-you to these energetic persons. The climax of the MOD campaign was at the dance on March 17 in Shelby, where Scott and Melanie were crowned 1978 Polk County March of Dimes King and Queen. 44 Honor Society Returns Standing: Mr. Habben, Mark Jones, Deb Bryan, Scot Sipes, Lori Coffin, Kelley Johansen, Steve Davis, Tim Bachenberg Third row: Paula Smith, Melanie Oquist, Patty Lisko, Janet Hiemcr, Bernadine Nitsch, Tammi Johansen Second row: Jean Soukup, JoAnn Schacher, Sheryl Schott, Pam Bryan, Brenda Peterson Bottom row: Amy Johnson, Kim Boden, Janet Wieseman, and Deb Jones. I spent 18 years in my hometown, a city of one million people. After graduating from high school, I made the big decision: going to the U.S. as a foreign exchange student. It was a remarkable experience for me to live one year in a rural town like Osceola. 1 enjoyed my American senior year more than my Belgian one. Students are great and the teachers are ok, too. I loved Homecoming, Thanksgiving and Prom; not to mention all those great football and basketball games. 1 would summarize this experience in one sentence: It has been a h ... of an experience. Thanks for everything. I was born and raised in Quezon City, capital of the Philippines, along with three brothers and two sisters. My father is an Army Officer and my mother is an English teacher in a public school. I go to a private school where 1 am the Assistant Scout master of the Senior Scouts. I’m a member of the basketball, baseball, and soccer teams. 1 enjoy Saturday the best because I can play tennis, racquetball, go swimming and race my motorcycle. I came to the United States to study and learn about the country and to tell everybody about the country I live in. Good Luck! eddy 47 The OHS Speech Team, consisting of seven members, had a successful year. Four members of the Speech Team placed at the Goldenrod Conference Speech Contest to capture 3rd place. This was the most contestants that Osceola High School had ever qualified for the state meet. 48 What’s Happening S. Watts, M. Dunn, S. Davis, and J. Graham represent the “What’s Hap- pening Kids” as they perform their familiar role. “What’s Happening” was the theme of the Variety Show. It was organized by Mr. Strong and Mr. Smolik. The show consisted of swing choir and stage band. The members of the groups performed in the skits. Judy Kucera had a piano solo “American in Paris”. Swing choir performed their No. 1 rated song at Contest “Candle in the Water,” “You Light Up My Life,” and “Annie Get Your Gun”. The stage band played “A Bit Of,” “Double Images,” “Samba Pacifica,” with Deraid Johnson and Lyndon Wieseman as our spotlight native dancers. The skits really had the audiences’ adrenalin raised. The soap opera was enjoyed the best along with the Pig Act: P. Watts, J. Schacher: Clown Act: L. Wieeman; and “The Barber Shop”: P. Schott, P. Hennings, and M. Dunn. The “What’s Happening Kids” shocked the audience as they introduced the show dressed just like the T.V. characters and were painted black. 49 Annual Staff Collects the Best of 1978 ANNUAL STAFF: K. We can still remember all the long hours spent trying to put the annual together. . . from numerous trips to Columbus trying to get the finished annual pictures, to a few nights spent after school until 7:00. We had good times and we had bad ones, too, but the reward came when we finally finished the annual. To be a senior and finish that last page of the annual is something we will never forget. Just to sit back and say, “We did it!” makes it all worthwhile. We could never have accomplished what we did if it hadn’t of been for Mr. Heine and Mr. Marquart sitting there pushing us all the way. We want to thank Mr. Heine for all the patience he showed us, and Mr. Marquart for checking all the pages. You’re two special people we’ll never forget. Best of luck to the editors next year and we hope your year will be as successful as ours. During the first semester, the staff underwent a change in sponsors due to the resignation of Miss Harmon. This did not discourage the staff, but under the supervision of Mrs. McKeag the staff went on writing their stories. Many interesting issues were printed. One in particular was the December issue which featured a faculty Christmas tree. During the year the staff members did a lot of typing, retyping, and proofreading. Although it seemed like a lot of work, each paper turned out very well and was interesting for the students to read. MIKE Staff Editors: Kim Boden and Amy Johnson 51 Seniors Show “Grandma’s Best Years” Open wider! Baseball, hotdogs, apple pie, or practice the violin! The days of Bonnie and Clyde were re-enacted when Mabel and Patch tried to take the real “Cec Waldnian portrait from the Abbott home on April 22. The senior class of 1978 performed “Grandma's Best Years” to the pleasure of an enthusiastic audience. The play was a lot of fun to put on, but the seniors really had to “pull teeth” because they had District Music Contest, tests, and the play to perform all in the same week. However, all in all, the cast had a busy and fun-filled week. Directing the play was Deb Ehmen, who was assisted by Kathy Thayer. But my specialty is grits and fried mush! I’d like you to meet my daughter Bubbles! 52 Juniors Make The cast consisted of Cathy Cerny, Lori Coffin, Steve Davis, Denise Gabriel, Bob Grossnicklaus, Paul Hennings, Tammy Johansen, Deraid Johnson, Glenn Miller, Kelli Soli, Kim Stromberg, Duane Tonniges, Mike Vcelik, Brenda Bryan, and Lyndon Wieseman. Big Success “Finders Creepers,” a mystery comedy, was presented by the Junior class, under the direction of Deb Ehnian, Kathy Thayer, and student director Barb Cerny. The play was about a middle-aged man who was almost murdered by poisoning, but lived to almost see his own funeral. 53 Come Sail Away—Prom 1978 People busy passing scrolls. Mr. Andelt was the speaker of the evening. Eric and Krissy enjoy a night full of dancing. 54 Prom guests arrive. What’s the matter Shari? Neil R., Eric H., Randy R., Pat S., and Mr. and Mrs. Andelt. May 6, 1978, was the date for this year’s prom with the theme “Come Sail Away.” The procession walked through a tunnel of streamers onto the dock, which lead to the ship’s deck. The servers dressed as sailors, ushered the guests to their seats. The servers also put on a cute skit which pertained to the theme. Everyone enjoyed the meal, which was catered by Wunderlich’s of Columbus. The highlight of the evening was a dance by MERCURY. Servers hard at work. 55 0-Club: Back row: T. Bachenberg. D. Johnson, D. Team Posts Winning Record The Orange and White ended the 1977 season at a convincing 7 and 2 mark. The offense, which ran out of a double wing formation, chewed up a total of 2,024 yards on the ground, and another 695 yards via the air, thus amassing a new school record in total offense. The defense was equally formidable, challenging opponents with innumerous formations, allowing just 841 total yards, and giving up only 75 points all season. The team’s strong performance came out of a combination of spirit and unity. Coach Chapman was proud of the way the Bulldogs used both of these characteristics to help overcome the adversities of injuries and sickness. It was this same pride and unity that resulted in seven team members being named to the Goldenrod All-Conference Team. Two were selected for both defensive and offensive honors, and one gained “All-State” recognition. The prospects for the coming year are excellent, as the nucleus of the seventeen lettermen of ’77 returns to carry on the pride of the Orange and White; may the spirit of ’77 be with them. 58 SENIORS: Dan Watts, Todd Hiemer, Eric Henderson, Scott Conkling, Randy Reese. The girls’ track team started the year out with a very disappointing loss to Columbus Scotus by only a couple of points. The team picked up the pieces quickly and started to rebuild. The next meet they participated in was the Fullerton Relays where the girls brought home the second place trophy. These young ladies continued on their victory streak by winning all their triangulars. Also, they brought home the second place trophy from the Friend Invitational and the first place trophy from the Goldenrod TWO-MILE RELAY: Nancy Lemp. Bernie Nitsch, Kris Monson, and Joyce Gabel. Conference meet. The track team was able to take conference by capturing first place in 12 out of the 14 events, giving the team a total of 168 points compared to the second team’s score of 60 points. The team then participated in a very difficult district sending only one event to state. This event was the two-mile relay. The team ended up placing fifth over-all at districts. At state the relay placed first in Class C. 69 Cheerleaders Keep Spirit Going The 1977-78 athletic teams were supported this year by a new organization. The idea of a pep club was dropped this year due to a lack of enthusiasm. A new club called the “spirit club” was formed in hopes that this organization would bring back some of the spirit and enthusiasm O.H.S. once had. Boys as well as girls could belong to this club. There were no requirements expected of anyone to go to any certain game, but the student body was encouraged to go out and support each athletic team. In the fall of the year the senior girls held the traditional breakfast for the football boys the morning of the Osceola-Stromsburggame. It may have been the goodluck charm for Osceola because they went on to win over the Vikings. The “pep rally of the year” award was given to the O.H.S. faculty. Many of the teachers participated in this event by playing their old high school instrument or a newly acquired one. The “band” began the rally by playing “Grand Ole Flag.” “The Gong Show” was then held which included a contest between all of the grades. The faculty “band” ended the pep rally by playing the school song.
