These rehearsals prepared the OHS Band for Columbus Days, Pershing, and Harvest of Harmony. The bands were highly competitive and the ratings were well earned. Ann Thornton was chosen to be the OHS Harvest of Harmony Queen candidate. The band was proud to have been represented by Ann. This year District Music Contest was held at Platte College, where the concert band received an excellent rating. The spring and fall concerts attracted large crowds which were very rewarding. Stage band held their practices at 7:30 in the mornings. It was hard to get everyone together at the same time, but they managed to come through with good remarks at the Ladies Auxiliary and Alumni Banquet, and an excellent rating was earned at contest. The band council planned a successful picnic after school on May 9. There was a plentiful supply of food and the band members had fun throwing each other in the Platte River at Haven’s. For the first time, the band went to Peony Park for an enjoyable day. Everyone had a good time. The next day, the band performed at Memorial Day services. The band of 1977 took with them three outstanding band members. They were DeVon Carlson, Jayne Nelson, and Peggy Tindall. 35 Seated on floor: D. Carlson, P. Watts, J. Wieseman and C. dall, C. This year they proved it to everyone! The dramatics team started the year by sending the One Act Play cast to contest at Blair, where they did an excellent job. The next event of the year was Conference Speech Contest at Stromsburg. Thirteen students participated. The team came home with four superior ratings, four excellent ratings and two good ratings. In district competition the team made another good showing by capturing five excellent ratings and six good ratings. Peggy Watts was the only member eligible to go to State Competition gaining the team’s only superior rating. On April 19 the team achieved a goal when they sponsored a Fine Arts Festival. The festival was held to bring public recognition to the fine arts areas. The festival was not only dramatics but also vocal solos, small musical groups and an art display. It was a very successful year and prospects are high that the drama team will continue its winning ways in the future. so State participant: Peggy Watts in Informative Speaking, “A One Act Play: IMPROMPTU by Steve Davis, DeVon Carlson, Guitar Lesson.” Darla Sterup, and Melanie Oquist Oral Interpretation of Drama: Peggy Watts, Lori Coffin, “I’ve always wanted to be the mother! During the 1976-77 school year the O-Club sponsored a cheering section for the volleyball games. For the Osceola-Stromsburg volleyball game the O-Club organized a bus for spectators, cheering section (with unique cheerleaders) and arranged for the pep band to go to the Burg game also. Besides this, O-Club sponsored concession stands where members sold ice scrapers to build up the treasury fund for later activities. To add to the athletic department fund, the O-Club sponsored one of the state’s class D district girls’ basketball tournaments which brought in a net of S258.47. The last week of school was exciting for the grade school children because the O-Club organized a grade school track meet where each student competed with his own classmates. Ribbons were provided by the O-Club and given to the first three places. 53 Left to Right: T. Hieiner, S. Schott, K. Boden, P. Smith, B. D. Carlson, P. Tindall, R. Gissler, M. The staff worked diligently day and night to produce the work you see before you. Led by their sponsor, Rebecca Scheele, the staff undertook twice as many money making projects as they had in years past. Concession stands, annual sales and advertisement purchases provided the needed money to give the annual added features, such as the metallic cover and various other special effects. The annual that you have in your hands right now is proof of the dedication of this year’s annual staff. Left to Right: Co-Lditor, Peggy Tindall; Business Manager. Many interesting stories were brought to us, but one unique story was about the U.F.O. and the students who claim to have seen it. The MIKE was issued monthly and in each issue, senior sketches, interesting puzzles and mazes to work, stories of things going on in school and in a few issues point-counter-point could be found. During the year the staff members and Mrs. Scheele did alot of typing, retyping, and proofreading. Although it seemed like alot of work, each paper turned out very well and interesting for the students to read. Back Row: Lyndon Wieseman, Gaylen Schmoker, Bill Monroe. The play was a comedy about a young girl who took over her father’s dude ranch. Complications arose when her cousin came to “help” in running it. The class made a total of S131.65 on the production. The procession walked through a rainbow entrance with three pillars along each side of the stairway. Guests were then ushered to their tables by the munchkins following the yellow brick road. The muchkins along with the Cowardly Lion, Tin Man, Scarecrow, and Dorothy performed some of the highlights in the Land of Oz. Everyone then ate a regular Emerald City feast. After the banquet, everyone enjoyed dancing to WINDSONG. The theme “All the Way Together” gave them inspiration throughout the season. The team’s practices began in August and the first game was held the first week of school. The early season was due to the addition of play-offs to the high school football schedule. A new offense was built on a fast backfield and a strong aerial attack. Grinding out a total of 1,427 yards on the ground, and 323 yards in the air, Osceola managed to score 125 points for the season. Dan Bond led all ball carriers with 758 yards and 10 touchdowns. The defense was a big key to many Osceola wins as they shut out three opponents. The secondary was very tough with 16 interceptions. Mark Schott led in tackles with 104 to his credit and Rick Johnson had 87 at his middle-guard spot. Fleet-footed quarterback sweeps right. The Bulldogs showed a great deal of effort and determination throughout the season. They revealed their strength when defeating fifth rated Stromsburg in a tough battle. Osceola also up-ended tenth rated Palmer. The team consisted of 13 able veterans. Ten lettermen will be returning next year. 60 Another gain called back from a good fake. Lack of height hurt the Bulldogs, but with the tough effort brought forth, rebounds were still pulled down. A lack of depth later in the season hurt the team when senior Devon Carlson and junior Neal Roehrs were injured and sophomore Rick Nordstrom moved away. Senior John Zelasney led in total points with 191 and also handed out a total of 77 assists. Reggi Mentink had the best shooting percentage and blocked a total of 26 shots. Reggi was named to the second team of the All Conference East Division. The very young team gained experience and made significant improvements through the coarse of the season. This was the first year since 1974 that the team had a reai track to practice on. The season was considered a success. The team won the triangular at home against East Butler and Silver Creek, and in a triangular with Stromsburg and Cedar Rapids the team was tied with Stromsburg and ahead of Cedar Rapids when the meet was rained out. The team placed third at the Stromsburg Invitational. 66 The track team entered the season with five returning letter-winners. There was a total of seven freshmen, one sophomore, two juniors, and one senior on the team. This year the track team was able to use their own track instead of using the gym and the streets. The team won first place at the Golden-rod Conference track meet and sent Bernie Nitsch to state for the second year in the 880 yard run and the mile. After weeks of hard practice and many exciting games with alot of hard competition, the varsity concluded their season with a 3-8 record. A 4-2 record was achieved by the junior varsity team.
