Hello, babvhellu, {for awhile, Haven't you quit doing time for me same spoilt child? jc only place you t e only man you eve id .m 1 just the last survi. friend that now? d-yrics of QMb k and Berme 5 . 1 Impressive New School The 1975-76 school board met throughout the year making many decisions relating to the Osceola school district. The board approved issues concerning a meter track and a girl's basketball team for next year. Members of the school board pictured are: from left to right, Don Yungdahl; Bob Johansen; Phil Ny-berg. secretary; Vernon Kuhnel. president; Jack Wieseman; and not pictured Paul Walgren. The district provided a new school building which everyone can be proud of. The new Junior-Senior High School was entered by enthusiastic students in the fall of 1975. Everyone enjoyed being in an air-conditioned building during the hot days. The carpeting in the school kept the noise level very low. 7 Faculty Enjoys New Building The faculty members of 1975 76 have had the honor and privilege of being the first to give instruction and pass on information from the new Osceola Junior-Senior High School. They have accomplished all that should be expected of them through unity and a good relationship with the student body. They have also made themselves a part of the com -munity by participating in various community affairs. Seventy-five percent of the married couples are home owners and pay taxes to help support the institution from which their salaries come. These teachers have also been good boosters of all school functions. The student body should be very proud to have teachers of such high quality and integrity always ready to stand by them at all times. They were a driving force in the school activities. (Most teachers will agree that they were driven up the wall by experts.) The juniors were again responsible for the Jr.-Sr. Prom. Their hardwork and determination enabled them to produce a memorable prom. They began their class activities with their controversial class play A THURBER CARNIVAL. This was directed by Miss Jacqueline Jonas. The class sponsors: Mrs. Norton, Miss Waldman and Mr. Valentine gave their added touches in all activities the juniors undertook. In the freshmen-sophomore tournaments at Genoa, Osceola was proud to bring home the first place trophy. Also, Nelson Tavares, a foreign exchange student from Brazil, left for home on January 27 after an exciting fun-filled year at OHS. 21 Nancy Asche Dana Augustine Shari Augustine Sara Bender George Boruch Alan Bryan Brenda Bryan Delores Cemper Barbie Cerny Cathy Cerny Doug Coffin Lori Coffin Freshmen Become Involved Steve Davis Leona Flatt Sam Flatt Denise Gabriel Connie Girard Bob Grossnicklaus Joan Hayes Paul Hennings Sherri Jinright Tammy Johansen Tim Johansen Deraid Johnson The new school building held many surprises for all, but especially for freshmen, like Steve Davis. 22 This year the freshmen entered the halls of OHS not as the terrified teeny-boppers of the past, but as an unmoveable force. This was due largely to the restriction of the traditional freshmen initiations. The freshmen class has become involved in many activities including vocal music, band, pep club, dramatics, and sports. The freshmen basketball team won their game with Columbus, and with the help of the sophomores were able to capture first place at the Sophomore-Freshmen tournament. The volleyball girls had a 2-3 record. The 47 freshmen are all anxiously and eagerly looking forward to the three more exciting years at OHS. Mr. Marquart and Mr. Schaeffer acted as sponsers for the class. While one may have thought this could cause grandeâ communication barriers, these three fit right in with the students at OHS. Toward the end of the year we found that Patricia knew all the recent slang and Simone was the ideal student all teachers look forward to having, but few actually get. Of course, we will always remember Nelson, who at the end of his stay in Osceola in January, turned out to be just as normal as the rest of us. Weâre sure that when these students went back to their home countries, they had a variety of new and exciting experiences to remember. Top: Patricia Canizares; Bottom Right: Nelson Tavares; Bottom Left: Simone Ferreira. 26 mm Band Undergoes Reorganization STANDING: Allene Baer KNEELING: Darla Sterup, Teresa Campbell, LuAnn Augustine The 1975 marching season started with many early morning practices. The first event attended by the O ,H ,S. band was the Harvest of Harmony parade and contest. The band received an excellent rating. At the Columbus Days parade, the band won the third place trophy. Pershing was the last marching event. A fair rating was received. The routine began with the band marching onto the field to the tune Another Op'nin , Another Show. Everything's Coming Up Roses formed with moving triangles came next. The band then went into a series of maneuvers playing St. James Infirmary. After the maneuvers, a block band was formed to the song A Wonderful Day Like Today, and the band marched off the field. BAND REPRESENTATIVES: Freshmen-C. Cemy, T. Kresha; Sophomores- M.Oquist, N. Roehrs; Juniors- A. Thompton. M. Jones: Seniors- S. Bryan, D. Herrmann, C. Kresha. Chris Kresha was Osceola's queen candidate for Harvest of Harmony. All the diligent work finally paid off. The band received a much earned superior rating at District Music Contest. A spring band concert provided experience and practice on many musical numbers which included the contest numbers, Festivo and Kentucky 1800 . Stage band was very busy this year. They participated in a Shelby Stage Band Clinic and returned with a superior trophy. A light concert was a new event for the stage band. Projected home movies and colored lights added to the concert itself. Soloists and small groups also did very well this year. Receiving superior ratings were the drum quintet and flute soloist, Ann Thornton. Receiving excellent ratings were the flute duet, flute trio, and trumpet soloist, Dave Herrmann. District Music Contest was a good learning experience; Osceola presented itself well and is extremely proud of all its participants. It had a late start but finally got together in February. The members consisted of freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors instead of having the members all from one class. New outfits and new songs started the Swing Choir going. As well as singing in the regular vocal concerts, they sang for graduation, and several events around the community, and even traveled to Stromsburg. Swing Choir was very busy this year and all but two of the members will return next year. 36 FHA Stirs Things Up Above From Left: LuAnn Augustine, Judy Gabel, Sonia Ienn, Pam Bryan, Amy Johnson, Amy Graham, Sue Schmoker, Jane Gabel, Carmen Schott Below From Left: Melanie Oquist, Darla Sterup, Jamie Graham, Becky Reese, and Mrs. Norton, sponsor. The FHA has been very busy this year with a lot of projects. During basketball season they held a cake raffle which brought in money for their club. During National FHA Week they did different things each day such as: wearing an apron, carrying a doll or stuffed animal, or even rolling up pant legs to show off crazy socks. The girls also sponsored films--I'M PREGNANT AND SEVENTEEN THE GYNECOLOGICAL EXAMINATION and VENEREAL DISEASE. The films were shown to the high school girls and were very educational. At Left: Darla SterupâTreasurer; Jamie Graham--Vice President; Melanie OquistâSecretary; and Becky Reese--President. 37 Honor Society Returns The Osceola Chapter of the National Society was reactivated this year by our new guidance counselor, Royce Schaeffer. The students were selected on the basis of scholarship, service, leadership, and character by a faculty council. Thirteen members made up the organization and the four seniors all received offices. Chris Kresha was elected president; Dave Herrmann, vice-president; Vicki Augustine, secretary; and Susie Bryan, treasurer. Some of the members explained to the sixth grade class the high school activities and what to expect in the first year of high school life. Members pictured are (left to right) Dave Herrmann, Peggy Tindall, Roxanne Gissler, Sue Yungdahl, Rick Johnson, DeVon Carlson, Vicki Augustine, Chris Kresha, Mr. Royce Schaeffer, Cindy Schott, Susie Bryan, Jayne Nelson, Beth Jones, and Paula Smith. Student Council Keeps Things Going The student council is composed of students that are elected from each class. Three students are selected from the senior class, and two from the junior, sophomore, and freshman classes. The student council's purpose is to promote understanding between the student body and the faculty. This year the council hosted a sweetheart dance in February, with Blackberry Winter providing the music. At the last home game of the basketlall season, the council held a cake raffle. The team managed to capture third place in conference competition. This was the highest ranking that an OHS dramatics team has achieved in recent history. In district action seven people qualified for state competition which was held at Kearney State College. Making the journey to Kearney were the Oral Interpretation of Drama team, After Dinner Speaker Roxanne Gissler, and Lori Coffin in Poetry Interpretation. The 1975-76 athletic teams were enthusiastically supported by 63 pep club members. The organization was sponsored by Marcia Chapman and Jean Peterson. New ideas were experimented with this year in hopes that the organization would remain energetic and spirited. The girls were involved in several activities, including a bake sale, the selling of clickers, sponsoring the Homecoming Dance, and cheer-leading and mascot tryouts. During the first part of April the pep club was busy planning and preparing for the annual Athletic Banquet. The O Club was organized in 1975 for the purpose of uniting the letter members of the athletic teams in hope of promoting a better athletic program for the school. The organization has generated spirit within the school and the club has started raising money to be applied to something that will be a benefit to all of the athletic teams. In the beginning, they never knew it would be like that. The haunting headlines, the blank pages of layout sheets, and worst of all Mrs. Scheele's frenzied look as the deadline date drew near for this year's crew of reporters--formally known as the MIKE staff. The journalism class the first semester had to meet these so-called terrors head-on and bring out a paper with the 'mark of approval from every supposedly normal high school student. THE CLOCKWORK ORANGE title for the paper just didn't appeal to them so the name was changed back to THE MIKE. No more nervous break downs for these people the second semester because all staff members volunteered for the staff the second semester. Members of the MIKE staff were: EditorâMary Jo Wieseman, Copy Editors--Irene Davis and Roxanne Gissler, Photographer--Teresa Campbell, Business Manager--Doug Peterson, staff writers--Allene Baer, Tammy Becker, Rich Hayes, Ron Jones, Kevin Marsh, Buddy Mautz, Joyce Jacobsen, Patty McGimpsey, Mike Smith, Rob Sterup, Becky Reese and Advisor--Rebecca Scheele. Diligent Work Pays Off ANNUAL STAFF: Top: Mrs. Scheele and Rob Sterup; Middle-. Editor Vicki Augustine, Chris Kresha, Mary Jo Wieseman, Susie Bryan, Paula Smith, Pam Bryan, Melanie Oquist, Tammi Hiemer; Front: Roxanne Gissler, Teresa Campbell, Doug Peterson, Peggy Tindall. The annual staff once again was forced to prove itself in areas of stamina, working ability, and imagination, as they were faced with the gargantuan problem of producing the 1975-1976 annual. Hours of tension caused by Mrs. Scheeleâs glaring looks, were relieved only by occasional distractions ranging from classic headlines like Pep Club Peaks at Mid-Season to comic sketches of the advisor eating in front of her starved staff. However, the annual progressed and finally materialized in the form you see it today. In spite of misisng a few deadlines, the annual finally made its appearance. One added bonus to this yearâs staff was the introduction of an honorary member, Irene Davis. She was known by all as an asset to the staff. 44 Juniors Present THURBER'S CARNIVAL Miss Jackie Jonas, with the help of Dot Snesrud, Roxie Vidlak, and Deb Ehmen, successfully directed the junior class play. The play, A THUR-BER CARNIVAL, was a collection of short stories by James Thurber. The comical play was well performed and provided an entertaining evening. This December production involved 24 class members, and netted a profit of $272. Innocent or Guilty? In April the seniors gave their annual class play. The production under the direction of Allan Marquart was TWELVE ANGRY JURORS. Fifteen members of the class held parts in the play which was termed a success. Hampered by a lack of experience, Osceola nonetheless posted a credible 4-5 season mark. The Bulldogs came close on several of their losses, and were only a few crucial plays away from an even better record. Rushing offense was the name of the Bulldog's game, as they utilized the wishbone attack to rack up an average of 195 yards rushing per game, with a high of 404 yards. An inexperienced defensive unit hindered the Bulldog's efforts, but the defensive secondary still managed to extend their streak of games, not allowing a touchdown pass, to 18, before it was snapped at Henderson. Osceola defeated eventual division champ Genoa, 15-14, in the season's first game, and the Bulldogs became one of the few teams to score on their very first play of the season, as Rich Hayes went 35 yards around left end. Dave Herrmann and Mark Schott represented Osceola on the All-Conference team, Dave being tabbed at offensive guard and Mark at linebacker. 53 Varsity: S. Bryan, V. Kucera, V. Augustine, T. Included in the Bulldogs 7-14 season were numerous close games, 7 losses being by 5 points or less. Highlights of the season were a second place finish in the Holiday tourney and a fourth place finish in the Conference tourney. In almost all dual meets the team forfeited at least three weight classes, and in one match they had to surrender five. Mike Smith was the only senior to come back out of the five returning lettermen, which meant that there would be a lot of inexperience on the mat. Despite all these pitfalls, the young team led by Coach Jon Habben, was able to post a respectable 4-7 dual season record. Ray Johnson, Dale Runquist and Rick Johnson went to the state tournaments. Rick was able to tie for fifth place. This group of 15 girls, coached by Jackie Jonas, added two first place trophies to the trophy case. These were from the Polk County track meet and the Fullerton Relays. They also won a runner-up trophy at the Conference meet held at Columbus. The District track meet proved to be an exciting event with Osceola placing seventh and sending Bemadine Nitsch to the State track meet in the 880 and the mile. As a young team, with many of its runners freshmen, the members gained much needed experience. All are looking forward to the 1977 track season with optimism. 60 SENIOR LETTER WINNER: Vicki Kucera Team Shows Dedication Twenty energetic boys became involved with the track season in 1976. The team was coached by Pete Chapman and Williard Jensen. During the season the team participated in eight track meets consisting of triangulars and invitationals.
