The problem being slim financial statis. After the election of officers, they immediately began planning possible moneymaking ventures. A chili feed was held which combined hard work, money making and a lot of fun. The beautifully performed class play, I Never Saw Another Butterfly directed by Mrs. Scheele was a smashing success which brought tears to the eyes of the audience. The rest of the needed money was obtained from a Christmas bake sale and various concession stands. The class sponsors; Mrs. Hubbard, Mrs. Scheele, and Mr. Valentine gave the class outstanding support. Meet New Experiences A year ago the class of '77 entered O. H. S. as a group of pretty shakey kids, but after almost two years, they have found high school life exciting, and not something to worry about. They went from fear-filled freshmen to sophisticated sophomores. Compared to last year this year has been a bit more lively. For example, the only wrestling to go to State competition was sophomore Dale Runquist, which must be quite a thrilling experience. Also, the class held the traditional Sophomore pancake feed after it was left out of the schedule last year. H. S. They really didn't know what to expect after starting all over and being the lowest class once again. Most of them were half-scared to appear every morning for classes, but later they found out it wasn't all that bad. After awhile when they were just getting to like the upperclassmen the bon-fire came. All the freshmen were informed to wear their walking shoes and I'm sure they’re all glad they did. After that night it took a week or two for people to get back on speaking terms. The class of 1978 is very energetic and enthusiastic. 20 Amity Lanes The girls actively involved themselves in singing groups, track, volley-ball where they had a successful season with a record of 4-1, and pep club where they contributed a lot of UMPH! The boys were involved in singing groups, football, wrestling, track and basketball with a record of 1-1. During one 6-weeks period or another there were almost 50°]o of the freshmen named honored students. The class has had a lot of fun and excitement in their first year of high school. They've made it this far and are looking forward to years to come. His name is Nelson Tavares age 15 of Colatina, Brazil. His father is a minister in Brazil. He stayed at the Pastor Nordstrom residence while in Osceola. Nelson enjoyed many of the activities of O. H. S. , especially sports events. Nelson's greatest experience was enduring our cold weather and liked it extremely well when school was let out due to snow. He made many friends while here in Osceola and we'll all think of him as a friend and added enjoyment to the 74-75 school year. Mini-Courses Well Accepted O. H. S. had the experience of mini-courses this year. These were small classes offered three times for a two week time period. Students provided a most enthusiastic reaction toward them so it is thought they will continue on into future years. Courses covered various activities ranging from knitting to riflery to powder puff mechanics and bachelor survival. The classes created an easier, friendlier attitude between teachers and students as could be felt walking down the hall on any given day. The new mini-course idea is one that the faculty and students feel should follow them to the new school next year. Who knows what evil thoughts lurk in the mind of every Senior boy?!? Bulldogs State Rated The Osceola Bulldogs football team bounced back from a disappointing 73 season to part an 8-1 record. Led by 14 seniors, Osceola rolled over eight opponents and were briefly rated 1 in the state before being upset by Fullerton 7-0. A new offense was unveiled by the Bulldogs in their first game, and it was good enough, along with a stout defense for a 46-0 victory over Genoa. Most of the Bulldog's games were big victories, as they averaged 22 points to their opponents five. Big victories in the season included a 30-6 win over state ranked Stromsburg, and victories over Polk and Clarks who were rated 4 and 5 respectively when Osceola met them. At the end of the season Osceola was rated 8th in the Omaha World Herald. Osceola had four All-Conference selections: Ron Fu-jan, Daryl and Doyle Nelson, and Mike Smith; and two honorable mention All-Staters: Dale Roehrs - A. P. honorable mention and Ron Fujan - World Herald and Lincoln Star. 26 Polk-Butler Insurance Osceola Implement with 8-1 Season Osceola SEASONAL RECORD Opponent 46 Genoa 0 21 Cedar Rapids 6 30 Stromsburg 6 0 Fullerton 7 42 Pal mer 14 13 Henderson 0 13 Silver Creek 6 20 Polk 0 14 Clarks 6 0 B-Team Stromsburg 14 0 Clarks 38 12 Polk 6 BACK ROW: Doug Augustine, Laird Watkins, Dale Roehrs, Mitch Coffin, Curt Mickey, Rue Johnson, Jeff Johnston. Thanks to all the support from the fans, and to the excellent coaching of Mrs. Teresa Christensen, the girls were able to pull through with a 7-5 seasonal record. The Varsity team was successful in bringing home a third place trophy from Conference Tournaments. JoAnne Gissler made the All Conference team in the Eastern Division. The Junior Varsity and Freshman teams did exceptionally, well, both winning all but one game. Mr. Johnson, Steve John- Team Balance Leads to 13-4 Season With only three returning lettermen, the 1974-75 Bulldog roundballers, coached by Larry Johnson and Pete Chapman, overcame inexperience to post a fine 33-4 record. The Bulldogs found it rough going at the start, as they lost two of their First three games, but things looked up as the Bulldogs went on to win 12 of their last 14 games. The inexperience that had taken its toll at the beginning of the season turned itself around for a string of eight consecutive wins before ending the season in the District Tournament to State participant Stromsburg. This year’s team came home with only one trophy-first place from the Holiday Tournament at Bradshaw. Balance was the name of the game this season as four to five players scored in double figures in almost every game. Ten lettermen contributed to the team's success this season. These included eight seniors and two juniors. Chet Graham and Steve Johnson were the 1974-75 co-captains. Four seniors received A11-Conference honors. Doyle and Daryl Nelson were chosen to the first team and Chet Graham and Jeff Johnston received second team recognition. Earlier in the season, forfeits due to the failure to fill all weight classes turned possible wins into losses, but later in the season as the classes were filled, team performance did improve. The Bulldogs finished second in the Conference meet and had a 3-6 record in dual meets. In District competition, Osceola took 6th place. Boys Improve with Season The 1975 Boys'track season ended in Omaha this year at the Boys' State Track Meet. Osceola had only one participant and garnished no points although there were several who placed at Districts. Steve Johnson placed 2nd at the District meet in the 180 yard low hurldles which earned him the right to participate in the State meet. Steve's time at Districts tied the school record of 20. 8 but he couldn't manage to get under that in Omaha. He did manage to make it to the finals of the low hurdles in the State meet, but the competition was tough and he failed to place. This year's meets consisted of the following: Shelby dual - 1st; Central City - 8th of 8; Fullerton Triangular -3rd of 3; Conference - 8th of 10; Polk County - 2nd of 4; Stromsburg Triangular - 3rd of 3; Polk Invitational - 8th of 15; Districts - 9th of 13. Due to the bad track facilities it was hard for the thinclads to practice this year, although many performances were consistent. The team was young as only five upperclassmen took part. Coaches Chapman and Jensen are looking forward to next year and the new track field with more experienced young men. OHS Harvest of Harmony Queen Candidate - Jody Rowan. in Extra Events MAJORETTES JoAnne Gissler Carlta Peterson Margie Lux Vickie Augustine The OHS Band started the 74-75 season on the right foot with a coveted one” rating at the Harvest of Harmony marching contest. The routine consisted of marching on the field in five company fronts to the tune of ”Everything's Coming up Roses”. A block band was then formed and a slow step to Marne” took the band into a residual diamond. To the music of Cabaret the block band exhibited wedge turns to form a column. This step was reversed as the block band marched off the field. In preparing for Pershing a displacement drill and X-0 drill were added to Fiddler on the Roof and the exit was an inspiring solo of Dixie played on the piccolo by Rachel Bachenberg. The bandsmen here received a two rating. Jody Rowan was chosen as the Osceola Harvest of Harmony Queen candidate to represent Osceola in Grand Island. The winter performances included playing Castle Gap and Meditations and Festiva at their contest competition. Osceola received a two” rating. Honor Band was held at Stromsburg high school with twenty-one students attending from Osceola. Other schools involved were Clarks, Polk, Stromsburg, and Silver Creek. A golden stairway up the middle of the floor along with a chariot and golden entrance gates brought out the theme. Couples were seated by the Freshmen servers, while Mrs. Alfred Hanson played the theme music on the piano. The before-dinner program began with a welcome by the junior class president, Vicki Augustine, after which the servers did an angelical skit. Rich Hayes prophesied the seniors' futures, and Curt Mickey read the traditional class wills. The evening's talk was given by Peter Chapman. Everyone enjoyed a delicious meal served by the juniors' mothers. The members each embroidered a quilt block for a money making project called Quilt for Profit . Long Hours Spent Completing Yearbook From the picture above one seems to feel the Annual Staff worked long hard hours in the completion of the 1974-75 annual. On the contrary, this staff had some of their work taken away from them. The Annual company was asked to reduce and paste on the pictures, all done by the Annual staff in earlier years. This year it wasn’t difficult to tie the whole annual together using the theme Friends and Things , what an annual is actually to contain in the first place. Council Completes New Banners New Conference team banners. Many thought the Student Council was achieving nothing during the 1974-75 school year but one must realize the student body must come to the council and give their complaints and wants. The council in turn goes to the Administrative Board to try to get what the students want. The only way the council would become effective would be with the support of the student body. After a slow start the Student Council strove to finish the remaining conference team banners to be hung on the gym wall with the rest. The council was also called upon to help with preparations of a few March of Dimes events. As a result of the contest the titlt CLOCK -WORK ORANGE was chosen. Under the instruction of Mrs. Scheele and the editorship of Jody Rowan, the offset print publication was distributed seven times during the 1974-75 school year. After the high school staff made the final layouts, they were taken first to Stromsburg where headlines were made and than to York where the CLOCKWORK ORANGE was printed on the press of the York DAILY NEWS TIMES. Funds for the printing cost were raised through selling subscriptions, advertisements, and donations of supporters. Douglas) The new high school building was formally dedicated last Friday, January 3, 1913. The cost of the building was approximately $50, 000. The exercises of the day began shortly after noon, and continued with music interspersed till after the hour of midnight. An immense crowd thronged the halls and rooms of the building during the afternoon and evening and the building was explored and admired to the heart’s content of the visitors. The heating and ventilating contrivances were both viewed with great interest by the crowds. The main halls are supplied with sanitary drinking fountains and in the dressing rooms tributary to the gymnasium. Those taking part in athletics will find it convenient to have whatever kind of bath they prefer. The basement room containing the gymnasium is arranged so that those participating in the gymnastic exercises are on the floor below the main basement floor and spectators can view the games from above without in any way interfering, and there is plenty of space so that all who desire may witness these events. The arrangement of the basement is one of the best tributes to the building plans. In keeping with the theme of Friends and Things we appreciatively say farewell to the old OHS High School but look forward with great enthusiasm to the dedication of the new High School.
