Redwood Motel Grapplers Send Three to State This year the Osceola wrestling team finished their dual season with a record of 4 wins and 4 losses. In tournament competition the OHS grapplers finished the end of the season strongly taking first at the Palmer Invitational and finishing fifth at the district tournament. This last meet qualified three wrestlers for the state meet. Under their first-year coach, Jonathan Habben, the boys showed great spirit and determination. As the year progressed the team gained more experience and improved greatly. At the end of the year the wrestlers selected their honorary team captain, most valuable wrestler, and most improved wrestler. Chuck Lemp was selected as team captain and also as the most improved wrestler. Ray Urban was selected as the most valuable wrestler as he captured 41 points for Osceola in dual competition. Steve Monson SENIOR Alan Sipes SENIOR State Participant Mike Van Hoosen SENIOR Dave Watts SENIOR State Participant Tom Yungdahl SENIOR Bob Zelasney SENIOR Boys’ Track The Boys’ State Track Meet in Omaha climaxed the track season for the OHS thinclads. Osceola placed 25th out of 128 class C schools competing in the annual event. Steve Monson garnered the only points for Osceola when he hurled the discus 142-9, his career best, which earned him third place honors. Dave Watts was unable to place in the mile run, but was clocked by two coaches at 4:43.9 which betters the school record of 4:44. 0 previously held by Charles Roberts. Following is a summary of the year's larger meets: Polk Invitational -3rd of 11; Conference-5th of 10; Polk County-2nd of 4; District-5th of 14. Osceola had a relatively successful season. Many performances were generally consistent. Much credit is due head coach Peter Chapman and assistant Willard Jensen for the time and work they put into the OHS track program and for keeping up the boys' spirit and will power.
