NOSTALGIA 1974 The Bulldog Osceola High School Osceola, Nebraska TABLE OF CONTENTS Dedication 2 Seniors 3 Underclassmen 13 Sports 23 Activities 37 Faculty 59 Picture Pages 63 January 27, 1974 marked the passing of a distinguished Osceola native, Dr. Charles W. Jeffrey, whose generosity helped make possible a new elementary school building. A man who believed in education and the youth of Osceola, Dr. Jeffrey bequested $140, 700 for the building fund. Dr. Jeffrey wanted to repay the community for furnishing him with an education he might not have otherwise received. He was the last living member of the Osceola High School class of 1902. It is to this man and his ideals that we dedicate this annual, NOSTALGIA 1974. We also wish to say our thank you by dedicating NOSTALGIA 1974 to the ' foreseeing voters of School District 19 who passed the bond issue approving the construction of a new Jr. -Sr. High School. It is the foresight of these electors which stands as proof of their interest in the quality of our education. The present building, constructed in 1913 and soon to be replaced by a modern structure, serves as a reminder of past days and people who make-up the true nostalgia of Osceola High School. This, my goal of the last 12 years, Is what I ve been waiting for. The days were laced with fun and games Along with my growing up; I've developed a personality— I've had to measure up. Not only to tests and teachers — Had to make it with my peers; And now that the struggle is over, I feel like shedding tears. I'm going to miss my classmates And the teacher's constant calls; I'm going to miss the notes and such We passed along the halls. But with the diploma comes a sad Thought growing inside of me . My adolescent years are gone — I must now face reality. Grace E. Class members participated and excelled in football, basketball, wrestling, boys’ and girls' track and volleyball. They were outstanding in vocal and instrumental music groups and let the student body academically. The class play, Up The Down Staircase , and the speech contests gave many juniors the opportunity to show their talents. The play, which held two performances, was directed by Mrs. Tomasevicz and aided by Mrs. Chapman. The money making projects in previous years made the Class’s Homecoming and Prom events to be long remembered. The sponsors of this class must not be forgotten with their patience and leadership that directed this Junior class. 25 sacks please, Debbie. Hurry! The smallest class in high school, the sophomores, made a significant place for themselves in high school life. A more experienced class again entered into school and extracurricular activities with zest and enthusiasm as they had done in their first year in OHS. The thirty-two member class contributed greatly to the athletic and music departments. Despite their size, the rest of the school certainly knew the class was around. The sophomores really lived up to their motto, We may be a small class, but we have a lot of class. Their original float received the third place prize in the senior division of the Homecoming parade. For the first year the sophomore class did not hold the annual pancake feed. Instead the class of 1976 began to raise money for their prom next year with other projects. May was the month for a bake sale and a car wash by the class. Life is sweet just because of the friends we have made, and the things which in common we share, We want to live on, not because our ourselves, but because of people who care. It's giving and doing for somebody else--on that all life's splendor depends. And the joy of this world, when we've summed it all up, is found in the making of friends. --Author Unknown Mike Smith Rob Sterup Sue Throckmorton Susan Tworek Gary Warren Mary Jo Wieseman Jim Winslow Do you have to sneeze, Mary Jo? I'm a freshman, Sir. Ah hah, one of the lowest of the low! Yes, Sir, anything you say, Sir. On August 27, 1973, there entered into OHS the new freshmen class expecting a similar scene as pictured above to happen to them everyday when meeting with upperclassmen. But to the utter suprise of these poor creatures, these overlords of the halls were human. That was the impression, however, only until the bon fire which has got to be the most terrifying night in the life of a freshman. Somehow on this night perfectly normal people turn into the monsters the class expected from the beginning. Don't get the wrong impression. The freshmen aren't complaining because they can’t wait until next year to do the same thing. One must admit the class of 1977 had some pretty great accomplishments in their first year of high school. For example, the freshmen volleyball team finished their season with a 5-1 record which is superior for an inexperienced team. The boys of the class had a successful basketball season winning both of their games and finishing second in the freshmen-sophomore tournament. However, one must also agree that there was a lot of help from the sophomores in this endeavor. A flute trio of freshmen girls received a superior rating at district music contest. This really came as a surprise to the group after a previous poor performance in band. The class have had many memorable times in their first year of high school and hope to have many more. Bulldogs Faced Trying Season The first record of a football game played by Osceola was on November 13, 1902. Osceola was defeated by David City 28-0. A quote from the November 6, 1902 Osceola Record statde The boys are beginning to take a little interest in football now, and are practicing nearly every night on the courthouse lawn . In 1973 football captured the interest of 36 boys who made up the gridiron team. It was a disappointing first season for Coach Chapman ending in a 2-7 slate. Assisting Chapman were Larry Johnson and John Habben. Leading the Bulldogs as co-captains were Dave Watts, center, rightguard, and middle guard, and Steve Monson, halfback and tight end. The season produced 25 lettermen consisting of 9 Seniors, 13 Juniors, 2 Sophomores, and 1 Freshman. A11-Conference honors were awarded to Ron Fujan, defensive linebacker and offensive tackle. Dispite a dismal season Osceola received much support from students and fans. Determination, excellent coaching and energetic fans helped the girls bring home a third place trophy from the Conference Tournament. Denise Dunn's skill won her the honor of all-conference. The judges awarded a one rating to the OHS band. The marchers then began preparations for the Pershing State High School Marching Band Festival. Some revisions were made, but the routine remained basically the same. In tough competition the bandsman received a 2+. As winter came so same concert band. Realizing the rut they had fallen into concerning the annual and its overall appearance and purpose, the staff decided to make significant modifications and changes. However, for such plans additional finances and the approval of the Board of Education were needed. Before approaching the Board, questionaires were sent to ten surrounding schools about their yearbook policies. Armed with potent information the editors of the annual met with a very receptive group of Board members. The Board generously voted to appropriate $500 for annual purposes. It was decided to contract Mr. Lewis Schott, Jr. to take additional photographs of school activities. The price of annual was raised to $5. These changes paved the way for much needed and an increase from 56 pages to 68 pages. Color and special photographic effects are a new contrast for the reader. The annual staff also performed another first by cosponsoring 'Fifties Day on March 22. The idea for such an activity had its birth in the Student Council, but was nurtured by the annual staff and eventually became a joint project of the two organizations. Many of the nostalgic photographs featured in the annual are products of Fifties Day which was deemed a success by all. An enthusiastic staff devoted many out-of-school hours to this annual in hopes of improving its total outlook. Great improvements and changes can't all be made in one year. However, it is hoped that this year's staff may have set a precedent for future staffs in trying to seek improvement and produce the best annual possible. Co-Sponsor “Fifties Day” After a late start, the student council managed to accomplish some of their goals and complete a relatively successful year. The largest undertaking the group attemp--ted was a variety show for charity. Over $100 was earned in the name of the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation. Individuals and groups from the Osceola and David City public schools gave musical, dramatic, and comic performances to make-up the variety show. Along with the annual staff the council sponsored a fun day at OHS featuring the theme of the Fifties. Fads and fashions of the 1950's were once again alive and well and filling the halls of Osceola High. At the time of this writing, the council is working on many projects for next year. The success of these plans is unknown. An attempt is being made to reinstate National Honor Society back into our school. The council is also attempting to further our journalism and speech departments by reactivating the school newspaper, THE MIKE and by forming a drama club which is to lead to Thespians. Next year's members have been elected by the respective classes. Steve Johnson will lead the student council as the new president. 49 King and Queen A Year In looking back. Homecoming 1973 was the highlight of the first semester. The annual event occured on a beautiful fall day with blue skies, warm sun and soft breezes. It was a moment to remember for OHS students and a time for reminiscence by alumi who lined the streets early that afternoon. Homecoming festivities began with a colorful parade through downtown Osceola. The theme was songs and the floats prepared by classes in both buildings were judged by a committee of local adults as they passed in review. Candidates for Homecoming Queen were seated in a convertible driven by math instructor Dennis Valentine and were accompanied by Christy Ericson, daughter of the Marvin Ericson's and Toby Watts, son of the Raymond Watts', as flower girl and crown bearer. The coronation of the Queen and her escort, the Football King, was held at halftime of the Osceola-Silver Creek football game which Osceola won 13-0. Vicki Wieseman and Dave Watts were crowned by last year's royal couple, Connie Urban and Bill Peterson. First attendants were Beth Fjell and Tom Peterson. The second couple was Debbi Tonniges and Steve Carlson. Winners in the float contest were also announced at halftime: Group I competition-1st, 8th grade-Feeling Stronger Every Day; 2nd, Sophomore class-Don't Mess Around With Jim (the Bulldogs); 3rd, Junior class-Leader of the Pack. Group II winners were: 1st, 1st grade-My Coloring Book; 2nd, a tie between 3rd grade Hi've Got a Tiger By the Tail, 4th grade-Dead Skunk in the middle of the Road, and 6th grade-Turn Your Radio On. The evening festivities were climaxed with a school dance in the gym which was beautifully decorated to depict the theme song, Morning Has Broken. Freedom Road provided the music and was enjoyed by all. It was a very special day from beginning to end and one the seniors will want to remember. At Christmas time the F.H.A. had a Christmas party where they ate dinner at the school and exchanged gifts. After the meal they went caroling at the Good Samaritan Center. Votes for the 1974-75 officers were cast and the following girls were chosen. Deb Asche received the role of president. LuAnne Augustine was selected as Vice-president.
