Concert Band Highlights The Green Domino by Clare E. Grund-man and El Dorado by Sammy Nestico were the two numbers performed by the OHS concert band at the District Music Contest held at Platte College on April 26-28. The band received ratings of 1, 2, and 3 from three expert judges for a composite score of a 2 or excellent. Contest activities started on Thursday evening with piano solos and duets. Carita Peterson who received an excellent rating and Barbara Schott who was awarded a good rating represented Osceola with piano solos. Large groups and swing choirs competed on Friday. Excellent ratings were granted to Girls' Glee, Boys' Glee, Mixed Chorus , Folksingers , and Stage Band. Everyday People, a newly formed vocal group consisting of thirteen juniors and sophomore Rachel Bachenberg as accompanist, received the only superior on Friday. The bulk of the six superiors came on Saturday during solo competition. A French horn solo won Margie Lux a superior rating. Sue Asche, Margie Lux, Lisa Norton, and Carolyn Wagner were awarded superiors for their vocal solos. Excellent ratings on vocal solos went to Norman Larson, Duane Oquist, Mark Tonniges, and Kathy Thayer. A clarinet duet by Julie Carlson and Lynn Watts and a flute trio by Rachel Bachenberg, Susanne Lemp, and Pam Watts also received excellents. On Recognition Night Mr. Bachman named Kathy Thayer, Murray Schmoker, Duane Oquist and Carolyn Wagner as honored bandsmen. A successful band season closed with the promise of an even more productive band next year.

Change was the theme for the OHS Band's 1972 marching season. The actual size of the band was lessened considerably with the departure of thirty-three experienced seniors and the arrival of a mere eleven members of the class of 1976. For the first time in four years, the band was under new direction. Mr. Neal Bachman led the band through their music and drills and trials and tribulations. Although changes were in the air, soggy early morning practices , memorizing music, and struggling through new steps and routines remained the main diet for OHS marching band students. The first test came for the sixty-nine member band on October 7 at Harvest of Harmony in Grand Islandv Led by Head Majorette Kathy Thayer and three new twirlers, Denise Dunn, Margie Lux, and Ca-rita Peterson, the band highstepped it in the morning parade. Directly ahead of the band rode the Osceola Harvest of Harmony Queen candidate, Mary Cerny. Mary ably represented OHS and finished fourth out of a field of forty contestants. To the strains of Make Me Smile , the band formed a smiling face to highlight their afternoon performance. However, not all faces were smiling when Osceola received an excellent or 2 rating. A completely new routine was developed during the next few weeks. Along with the new routine, a new confidence went with the band to the Pershing Marching Contest. The ten minute show seemed to be over in a matter of seconds, but the time seemed to be endless until Osceola's 1 was finally announced. This was the second year in a row in which OHS received an unqualified 1, which is a 1 from all three judges. The marching season was climaxed that night with a party at King's. Mr. Bachman announced his selections for Best Boy and Girl Marcher, seniors Duane Oquist and Jackie Smith. Thus a successful marching season ended on a happy note. Precious Time BAND COUNCIL BACK ROW: Ron Jones, Mitch Coffin, Dave Watts, Duane Oquist. FRONT ROW: Irene Davis, Carita Peterson, Ann Cerny, Jackie Smith.
