With mixed feelings the 33 members of the class marched in behind Beth Fjell and Steve Carlson. Other ushers were Ann Cerny, Jenny Cerny, Vicki Wieseman, Steve Monson, Tom Peterson, and Dave Watts. Duane Oquist gave the salutatory address on dedication and respect. Pam Walford followed with the valedictory address centered around the class motto: I am not afraid of tomorrow, for I have seen yesterday, and I love today. Vocal selections were done by Folk-singers , a senior singing group, and Mixed Chorus. The guest speaker, Melvin Olsen, Administrator of School Services for the Department of Education, spoke on They are Different. The class was then granted their diplomas by Eugene Johansen, President of the school board, thus ending one part of their lives and opening up a new and dif- SALUTATORIAN Duane Oquist ferent one. After the introduction of our bus driver, Norman, everyone settled down for a slumberless all-night party. At 6:30 a.m. we arrived at our destination, Denver, Colorado, and ate hearty breakfasts. Our day was then pleasantly spent by touring the Red Rock National Park, Lookout Mountain, Central City (a former gold-rush town), and the Denver Zoo. A stop was made at a sports center also. Night arrived, Elitch Garden opened, and a fun-filled two hours passed swiftly. At 9 p.m. the bus headed back to Osceola. At 6:30 a.m. the seniors arrived home, tired, but satisfied. Sponsored by Farmer1 Co-op Grain Company Seniors Leave O.H.S. A Night in the Orient was the theme for the 1973 junior-senior banquet and prom. At the sound of the gong the guests entered the incense-filled room, while pianist Carita Peterson played various oriental pieces. The program began with a welcome by junior class president Nancy McDonald, who instructed the guests on the proper use of chopsticks. The class wills were read by Jim Carlson and John Girard prophesized the seniors' futures. Senior class president Mike Johnston then gave the thank you followed by Mr. Larry Johnson, wearing an oriental smoking jacket, who was the speaker for the evening. Freshmen servers Susie Bryan, Irene Davis, Debbie Klaus, Denise Snodgrass, Sue Throckmorton, Mary Jo Wieseman, Rich Hayes, Steve Johnston, Ronnie Jones, Dayle Mautz, Doug Peterson, and Rob Sterup were dressed in colorful kaftans and karate jackets. JUNIOR HIGH Band Marches To MAJORETTES Denise Dunn Kathy Thayer Carita Peterson Margie Lux Change was the theme for the OHS Band's 1972 marching season. The actual size of the band was lessened considerably with the departure of thirty-three experienced seniors and the arrival of a mere eleven members of the class of 1976. For the first time in four years, the band was under new direction. Mr. Neal Bachman led the band through their music and drills and trials and tribulations. Although changes were in the air, soggy early morning practices , memorizing music, and struggling through new steps and routines remained the main diet for OHS marching band students. The first test came for the sixty-nine member band on October 7 at Harvest of Harmony in Grand Islandv Led by Head Majorette Kathy Thayer and three new twirlers, Denise Dunn, Margie Lux, and Ca-rita Peterson, the band highstepped it in the morning parade. Directly ahead of the band rode the Osceola Harvest of Harmony Queen candidate, Mary Cerny. Mary ably represented OHS and finished fourth out of a field of forty contestants. To the strains of Make Me Smile , the band formed a smiling face to highlight their afternoon performance. However, not all faces were smiling when Osceola received an excellent or 2 rating. A completely new routine was developed during the next few weeks. Along with the new routine, a new confidence went with the band to the Pershing Marching Contest. The ten minute show seemed to be over in a matter of seconds, but the time seemed to be endless until Osceola's 1 was finally announced. This was the second year in a row in which OHS received an unqualified 1, which is a 1 from all three judges. The marching season was climaxed that night with a party at King's. Mr. Bachman announced his selections for Best Boy and Girl Marcher, seniors Duane Oquist and Jackie Smith. Thus a successful marching season ended on a happy note. Concert Band Highlights The Green Domino by Clare E. Grund-man and El Dorado by Sammy Nestico were the two numbers performed by the OHS concert band at the District Music Contest held at Platte College on April 26-28. The band received ratings of 1, 2, and 3 from three expert judges for a composite score of a 2 or excellent. Contest activities started on Thursday evening with piano solos and duets. Carita Peterson who received an excellent rating and Barbara Schott who was awarded a good rating represented Osceola with piano solos. Large groups and swing choirs competed on Friday. Excellent ratings were granted to Girls' Glee, Boys' Glee, Mixed Chorus , Folksingers , and Stage Band. Everyday People, a newly formed vocal group consisting of thirteen juniors and sophomore Rachel Bachenberg as accompanist, received the only superior on Friday. The bulk of the six superiors came on Saturday during solo competition. A French horn solo won Margie Lux a superior rating. Sue Asche, Margie Lux, Lisa Norton, and Carolyn Wagner were awarded superiors for their vocal solos. Excellent ratings on vocal solos went to Norman Larson, Duane Oquist, Mark Tonniges, and Kathy Thayer. A clarinet duet by Julie Carlson and Lynn Watts and a flute trio by Rachel Bachenberg, Susanne Lemp, and Pam Watts also received excellents. On Recognition Night Mr. Bachman named Kathy Thayer, Murray Schmoker, Duane Oquist and Carolyn Wagner as honored bandsmen. A successful band season closed with the promise of an even more productive band next year. They captured the Golden-rod Conference Wrestling Championship for the first time since wrestling was organized at Osceola four years ago. Another first this year was a winning record in which they only lost twomeetsout of eight dual meets. They also had a state participant this year. John Girard wrestled in the first round at State after capturing first place in the 119-lb. class at the district wrestling meet. John was also one of this years co-captains along with Duane Hahn who was chosen by the team early in the season. Eleven regular members of the team lettered this year. They were seniors Duane Hahn, Duane Oquist, and Mark. Tonniges; juniors John Girard, Chuck Lemp, Norman Larson, Merle Runquist, and Dave Watts; and sophomores Mike McMeekin, and Ray Urban. Duane Hahn had the best record of the season with a 17-3 record and John Girard followed close behind with a 16-4 record. Other wrestlers who compiled 507. or better records were Mark Tonniges, 12-8; Dave Watts, 10-8; Norman Larson, 5-3; Merle Runquist, 11-11; and Duane Oquist, 6-6. SEASON RECORD Swede Relays 7th Polk County 2nd Goldenrod Conference 7th District (tie)9th State no place Charlene and Jim On October 20, Osceola celebrated Homecoming, 1972. Although it was windy and quite cool throughout the day's and night's festivities, the town and football stands were full of weturned alumni and interested fans. Unfortunately, the cheering couldn't warm up our Bulldog team and they were defeated by the Polk Cubs, 27-14. The theme of the Homecoming Parade was The Wonderful World of Disney. Due to the wind and cold there were no floats preceding the coronation at half time. The attendants were Debi Mickey and Chris Hayes and Charlene Fujanand Jim Carlson. Crowned King and Queen for the night were Connie Urban and Bill Peterson. George Winslow and Kim Svoboda assisted at the coronation . With the help of almost all the student body purchasing tickets, the Second Annual Homecoming Dance, sponsored by the Pep Club, was held in the OHS gym after the game. Star Child was the band who played for the dance. Disneyland Homecoming A Success Pep Club Decides On New Uniforms theme ye Olde Royal Court . A person that was a great help in promoting Spirit in the pep club when it was lagging was Robin Walgren, who proved that Bulldog spirit never dies. On April 7 the Athletic Banquet was held. The pep club did the decorating around the theme The OHS Wide World of Sports . The speaker for the evening was Michael Palmisano, wrestling coach at the UNO. On Recognition night Mary Jo Wiese-man, Denise Dunn, Debbie Asche, Debbie Tonniges, Lorre Wobig, Nancy McDonald, Mary Cerny, and Jackie Smith were named as honor peppers. Even though some of the changes were hard to adjust to the pep club kept the spirit going. They are looking forward to next year in their new uniforms. The pep club underwent several changes this year to boost the spirit of the team and the school body. One of the changes was that each member was required to go to all the home football games as well as three away games. All of the home basketball games and wrestling matches were required and squads were assigned to the a-way meets. Another change was the assigning of poster making by the executive committee. The girls had to decorate the school hallways and rooms the night before a game. Some of the posters were quite-unique. This year the pep club had a bake sale on September 2 as a money-making project. The money was used to pay for the homecoming dance. F. H. A. On The Go Throughout the 1972-73 school year, the Osceola Chapter of the Future Homemakers of America was continuing to prove that F.H.A. Cares --about providing recreational activities, educational experiences, and community service. It was again this year their sponser and advisor, Miss Marlene Ahlschwede, who generated the enthusiasm for the girls. Beginning with a Get Acquainted party in September, the chapter has proved to be an active one. Special programs were presented to the girls at various meetings. A talk and picture presentation of Hawaii were given by Miss Ahlschwede and Barb and Cathy Schott, and Mrs. Truman Bachenberg presented a slide program of Africa. In December the annual Christmas party was held in the halls of OHS, climaxed by the decorating of an old-fashioned Christmas tree and the exchanging of gifts. Popcorn was strung along with cranberries, and decorations were made from cloth, cardboard, tin foil, and egg cartons. February proved to be an exciting month with a Valentine's Party. Valentines were made, then put on display on the official F.H.A. bulletin board. For the first time Historian-Sharleen Lloyd Newsreporter-Deb Asche Secretary Treasurer-Cathy Schott Vice-President-Barb Schott President-Kathy Thayer ever, Secret Sisters were drawn and each received small gifts the week before Valentine's Day. Then at the party, the Secret Sisters were revealed. April 1-7 was F.H.A. Week. One day the girls wore the traditional red , posters were put up, and the bulletin board displayed facts about F.H.A. A special spaghetti supper was prepared and served by the members on April 3. F.H.A. did not shirk their responsibility to the community; they made toy packets for the local hospital for presentation to young patients. As always the Osceola Chapter of FHA has certainly shown their total involvement of activities in and out of school in the 1972-73 year. Student Council Looks For Suggestions Although O.H.S.'s Student Council was not a very strong force in the 1972-73 school year, they did meet 3 times to take care of the earth-shaking business of officers elections and concession stands. Student Council could become a very strong force in the school system at O.H.S. They honestly do have noble aims: to provide a solution for questions, to promote faculty-student understanding, to perhaps direct school activities to more progressive fields, to act as an instigator of new clubs or organizations that the students may request, and to generally promote spirit and school pride. Also the Student Council has the chance to sponsor dances for the students, coffees or teas for the faculty, special dress-up days, and to initiate an inter-visitation of schools to obtain new ideas. The suggestion box in our upstairs hall is a channel for the council to recieve constructive thoughts instead of bubble gum wrappers; it is one way to get the Student Council back into more worthwhile pursuits. SEATED: Kathy Thayer, Mary Cerny, Editor Ruth Bachenberg. MIKE Becomes Extra-Curricular Activity The 1972-1973 MIKE was published for the first time in three years as an extracurricular activity. Because of an insufficient number of students enrolled, the journalism class was cancelled. Mrs. Dale Heth remained the MIKE sponsor. A staff of twelve, including two freshmen, three juniors, and seven seniors, accepted the challenge to create an interesting school newspaper in their spare time. With Ruth Bachenberg as editor or compiler, seven issues of the MIKE were published. Other staff positions were Business Manager and Circulation-Carolyn Wagner, Sports Editor-Rob Sterup, Sports Columnist-Connie Lux, Columnist-Kathy Thayer (Thayer's Thoughts), Photographer-Nancy McDonald, Writers-Debi Mickey, Mary Cerny, Cathy Schott, Barb Schott, Nancy McDonald, and Jane Gabel. The staff did run into trouble meeting publishing dates. However, by assigning the responsibility of each page to a certain individual or group newspaper managed to stay close to the publishing time. Besides regular features and news stories, the MIKE carried polls and articles on birth control and abortion and on television shows. Fourth grade literary works were also published. The highlight of the year was the Nebraska High School Press Conference held at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln in November. Hopefully in the coming years journalism classes will gain enrollment and the MIKE will once again be a class project. Bulldog Staff Works Overtime A balloon expedition symbolizes a past f illed with excitement, adventure, and good times. The annual staff hopes that our colorful and unusual cover will in future years be a reminder of a memorable past at O.H.S. An enterprising staff of eight has compiled a complete summary of the 1972-1973 school year. Due to financial reasons the annual has reverted back to publishing their own typed material instead of having the book professionally printed. With the purchase of a new typewriter, this move is hopefully not a step backward. More fun pictures and baby pictures appear this year by popular demand. Jackie Smith served as the annual editor for this years Bulldog.
