Text from Pages 1 - 64 of the 1972 volume:

I remember the cultivation of Beatle bubble gum cards. I remember helping my babysitter look up answers in an encyclopedia .... And, now, Ringo says the Beatles are no longer . . . I'm the one who's performing. Now, I'm babysitting for my babysitter . . . and tracking down ten sourecs for a term paper. And Now is the past, but I still remember .... I remember English tests, the SAT, and government quizzes. I remember Ideas forever dormant Ideas executed. I remember Teachers behind desks, Teachers behind podiums, Teachers behind lab tables. I remember white roses and blue ribbons, girls in prom dresses, a bucket in room 301, watching the clock and thinking that bell was never going to ring, watching the clock and hoping that bell would never ring I was having so much fun. I remember orange dots in a crowd, freezing through football games, counting seconds. I remember play practice, forgotten notes, saying I flubbed it a lot. I remember graduated flasks, slide rulers, paint brushes, class meetings, Remember When in the MIKE I remember the dammit joke, the fun house, DO IT! Right on! I remember my senior year at OHS .... I remember squat thrust birpies and snowball, my best friend's smile people wondering about the wasted space in the halls, colliding with five other people in the hall during just one bell, going to school at 8:00—a.m. and p. m.. clapping hands, climbing stairs, cleaning desks. As rain poured down the closer they got to their destination everyone thought the whole day was ruined. But surprisingly enough, not one drop of rain was felt the To Lake Okoboji whole time they were there. The sneak day was spent riding exciting rides on the midway, roller skating and browsing and buying in souvenier shops. About 5:00 p.m. the weary seniors loaded the buses and rode in rain all the way home. Everyone agreed that their sneak trip was a fun-filled ex perience. 10 Juniors Create “Blue Hawaii” The beautiful and enchanting Hawaiian Islands provided the setting for the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom '72. The April 29th event began as the newly arrived visitors to Blue Hawaii” were greeted with the traditional lei from servers clad in Polynesian regalia. A scrumptious luau feast followed. The class wills and the class prophecy were then read, and were succeeded by Mr. Heine, who gave the evening’s talk. On May 1 the class rings were ordered. The class of ’74 is looking forward to everything ahead during their next two years at O. H. S. We hope their heads aren't as empty as their helmets! Bulldog Marching Band had a successful marching season in the autumn of 1971, topping their records of recent years. The success was largely due to the increased enthusiasm and spirit felt by the bandsmen. A great deal of pride was generated both by the members of the band and their followers. On October 9, the Bulldog Band traveled to Grand Island for the annual Harvest of Harmony. Participation in the street marching competition in the morning prepared the bandsmen for the afternoon field competition. This year Sue Lieberman represented Osceola in the Harvest of Harmony Queen contest. Sue was the first representative to the contest ever submitted by Osceola and she represented the band well. The field marching routine, an intricate arrangement of steps and turns set to a medley of songs arranged by Mr. Cadwallader, brought Osceola a superior or 1 rating, much to the delight of the bandsmen. The Bulldog Band returned to Osceola prepared to work hard to capture a superior rating at the Pershing Marching Contest to be held on October 30 in Lincoln. After a few minor changes in the routine and relatively few early morning practices, the band took the routine to Pershing and received the only unqualified ”1 rating in class C competition. This means that Osceola received 1 ratings from each of the three judges. The marching season was climaxed by the first annual Band Banquet organized by Mr. Cadwallader , the Band Council, and the Band Parents, and held on December 2. Jack Snider, director of the University of Nebraska Marching Band, was the main speaker at the banquet. At this time marching medals and the new senior medals were awarded to the band members concluding a great marching season. MAJORETTES Kathy Thayer Linda Johnson Sally Mills Sue Eikenhorst 21 22 Concert Band Completes Excellent Season District music contest was held at Platte College in Columbus this year. The band played Beethoven Bicentennial Suite arranged by Philip Gordon and Overture For Winds by Charles Carter. Although they received a 2 or excellent rating the bandsmen felt that they had learned a great deal from the rehearsal of the songs. Superior or 1 ratings in the instrumental division were awarded to soloists Carita Peterson and Cindy Nahr-stedt; the flute duet--Debbie Larson and Cindy Nahr-stedt, the clarinet choir, the woodwind quartet, and the stage band. The band will surely miss the 30 departing seniors but there is an enthusiastic group of 9 freshmen joining the ranks. The Beat Goes On On the contemporary side of the O. H. S. music program come Scorpio, Folksingers, and the Stage Band. Scorpio, a group formed last fall, consists of twelve seniors with Mr. Cadwallader as writer, arranger, and accompanist. The members have shown their versatility by doing a variety of numbers, some with soloists and others with instrumental accompaniment. Their hard work and long hours of practice resulted in a television appearance in March, which was the highlight of their year. Folksingers, formed last year, is a group of eleven juniors, sophomore drummer Alan Sipes, and freshman accompanist Carita Peterson. They too have worked hard and show much promising talent. Several performances by these two groups were made at civic and church organizations. The Stage Band, after practicing all summer, gained a few new members in the fall from the freshman ranks. Attending a clinic at Nebraska Wesleyan University in January proved to be beneficial and the Stage Band progressed rapidly. A concert consisting of musical numbers entirely from these three groups was given in February and everyone involved felt it was a great success. Competitive sports, something new to the girls, proved to be exciting and stimulating. Coach Lee Ann Lee was assisted by A1 Stroup and the team came home from the Conference Tournament with fourth place honors. A special honor was having senior Margie Simon -sen named to the all-conference team. They were Sue Asche in the 440, Jenny Cerny in the 220, and the 880 relay team comprised of Ann Cerny, Karen Schott, Asche, and Cerny. At the district, the team placed second with 34 points. Sue Asche, Debbie Asche, and the 880 relay team brought home first place medals in the Goldenrod Conference meet, again placing second. Coach Gary Workman, along with his assistants, Larry Johnson and Willard Jensen, led the squad to the Goldenrod Conference title for the second straight year. Leading the offense were senior running back Steve Tonniges, junior running back Jim Carlson and junior quarterback Chris Hayes. Mainstays in the offensive line were senior guards Randy Neujahr and Roger Augustin and junior tackle Bill Peterson. The leading end was Colin McKeag. On the defensive side, these same guys were in on most of the action in addition to senior lineman Steve Kumpf. Three OHS team members were named to the Goldenrod Conference team for 1971. They were Bill Peterson, offensive tackle, Colin McKeag, defensive end, and Steve Kumpf, defensive tackle. Returning next year in hopes of a third straight conference title are 15 lettermen, 7 juniors, 7 sophomores, and 1 freshman, but gone will be the experience of 7 mighty seniors, Kurt Anderson, Augustine, Monty Jones, Kumpf, McKeag, Neujahr, and Tonniges. Next year's team will attempt to reconstruct the victory string that was broken this year after 35 games without a loss. The team should be very proud of themselves for they were beaten only by two top 10 teams. Unlike the homecoming of a year ago, the day remained beautiful throughout the parade, the coronation, and the football game. Many alumni returned to Osceola to enjoy the annual homecoming festivities. The homecoming parade, led by the Boy Scouts who were closely followed by the Bulldog marching band, the homecoming royalty, and the floats, set off the festivities. The theme of this homecoming was Happiness is— — and was cleverly portrayed in the many floats both the traditional floats and the newer walking floats. In a cold but clear evening the Osceola Bulldogs met the Silver Creek Tigers, and by half-time the Bulldog determination was evident. The half-time festivities Crown Bearer Greg Boruch and Flower Girl Penny Watts commenced with the Bulldog band's entrance on to the field and forming a heart. The results of the afternoon float competition were announced and then the queen’s float, Colour my World, swept on to the field. The royal couples were announced: Attendants Jackie Rowan and Roger Augustin, Karen Johnson and Monty Jones, and Queen Janet Urban and King Randy Neujahr. Roses were presented to the queen and her attendants and the queen's float left the field, as the second half of play began. Osceola proceeded to defeat the Tigers soundly, 24 to 8. Following the game, the first annual Homecoming Dance, sponsored by the Pep Club and held in the Legion Club, was enjoyed by many. Roundballers Compile Erratic Season The Bulldog basketball team, under the direction of head coach, Larry Johnson and his assistant Gary Workman, ended a sub-par season, as far as OHS tradition goes, with a 6-11 record. The greatest share of playing time was logged by seniors Randy Neujahr, Colin McKeag, Monty Jones, and Steve Tonniges and junior Jim Carlson. When any of these were ill or injured, Chris Hayes, Brad Johansen, or Bill Peterson started in their places. All of the above mentioned plus Mike Johnston were named as lettermen by Mr. Johnson. Neujahr was chosen by the entire squad as their captain for the season. The scoring leader was Carlson with 241 points. Following him was Neujahr with 200. McKeag took the rebounding honors with 177. Carlson was next with 150. The Bulldogs finished with a 4-3 record in the Goldenrod Conference, handing champion Palmer their only loss. On the season, the Bulldogs made 33P o of their field goal attempts and 50°Jo of their charity tosses. They out-rebounded their opponents 681 to 645. The B-team record was also lower than usual, 8-5. The freshmen won all three games they played, two versus the Columbus 9 B-team and one versus Genoa. Genoa didn't sponsor their annual freshman tourney this year. With five returning letterman, there are hopes for improvement next year. Through coach A1 Stroup's guidance, they won four of their nine dual meets, beating state champion Clarks, Palmer, East Butler, and Leigh. In the Goldenrod Conference meet, held here at OHS, the Bulldogs grabbed hold of second place behind powerful Stroms -burg and again ahead of Clarks. They also attended the York, Clarks, and Stromsburg Invitationals. There were 11 grapplers who qualified as lettermen. They were seniors Kurt Anderson, Roger Augustin, Mike Ienn, and Mike Treffer, juniors Duane Hahn and Mark Tonniges, sophomores John Girard, Norman Larson, Dave McMeekin, and Merle Runquist, and freshman Ray Urban. Treffer compiled the best record, 19-7, and placed fourth at the district meet at Gibbon. John Girard, 13-6, Duane Hahn, 12-8-1, Ray Urban, 10-7, Kurt Anderson, 11-8, and Mark Tonniges, 2-2, also had .500 or better records. Underclassmen Show Promise This year’s boys track club was comprised mostly of underclassmen, mainly the sophomores, as there was only one senior and five juniors. Because of the youngness of the club, winning was not common, but experience reigned high as these young men learned how to compete. The team's best showings were at the Polk County Meet, where they placed a strong second behind Stroms-burg. and the Goldenrod Conference Meet, where they finished in the upper half. Dave Watts was the only representative to the state meet from Osceola. He won the 2-mile at the District meet held at Norfolk. Next year after losing just one senior, the Bulldog thinclads should be contenders in very meet they enter. The sophomores and juniors will bexome experienced and dedicated juniors and seniors with hopes of a fruitful season. 1972 O. H. S. Bulldog This was the year for experimenting by the O.H.S. Pep Club. We had the first of what we would hope to be many homecoming dances. The dance was held at the Legion Club on October 15. The Juniors did a beautiful job of decorating around the theme of Colour My World. ” Led by the royalty the crowd danced to the music of the Convention. The major task of revising the Constitution to cover new developments within the group was the next experiment. Provisions were made for a way of choosing our mascot, for wearing orange knee socks and gray skirts with four pleats and for a wrestling Pep Club. The Wrestling Pep Club consisted of 15 girls interested in wrestling who were relieved of the duties of the basketball season. We discovered our experiment needs more work. Spirit A big help to the Pep Club was our mascot, Vicki Wieseman. She was seen at the games in her Bulldog outfit. When she was unable to wear the uniform, the assistant Linda Treffer took over. Honored peppers chosen this year were Sue Eiken-horst, Debbie Larson, Jackie Smith, Sue Asche, Linda Treffer, Julie Carlson, Denise Dunn, Debbie Asche, and Lynn Watts. We closed the year out by decorating and making provisions for the Athletic Banquet. This year's banquet was centered around the theme of Let’s Talk Sports. Speaker was Nebraska’s lineman Carl Johnson. As the year went by we found out, as all experiments go, some are successful and some need more time and effort. Works Toward New Horizons Throughout the 1971-72 school year, F.H.A. proved continuously that There's a New World Coming. Again this year Miss Ahlschwede generated the enthusiasm for the 16 girls. This year, degrees were worked on with a new kind of approach called Encounter. The busy schedule started out with a drive for freshmen joiners. In October, 9 girls attended the District Convention at Lakeview where the theme There’s a New World Coming served as a guide for discussions, lecture, and thought. Even though November 21 was quite chilly, the concerned F.H.A. girls collected $120 for Honey Sunday. The money was then given to the Nebraska Association for Retarded Children. In December the annual Christmas party was held in the halls of O.H.S. climaxed by the decorating of an old fashioned tree. Popcorn was strung along with cranberries, and decorations were made from cloth. For Homecoming, F.H.A. chose the title Happiness is an Orange Lollipop. ” One big improvement was the fact that F.H.A. now has a bulletin board of their own. On this bulletin board during F.H.A. Week, March 19-25, ideas were put up illustrating The Profiles of Youth, which was the theme. Also the red rose, the motto, Toward New Horizons, the F.H.A. Prayer Song, the Creed, as well' as the goals of F.H.A. were displayed throughout the halls of O.H.S. From the concerned involvement F.H.A. has shown both in and out of school during the year, a more accurate description of this organization would be impossible. F.H.A. OFFICERS Student Council Has Banner Year As in past years the 1971-72 Student Council sought to make improvements at O. H.S. This year's officers were: Randy Neujahr--president, Brad Johansen--vice-president, Julie Wobig—secretary, Margie Simon-sen--treasurer, and Charlene Fujan--publicity chairman. The members attended frequent meetings throughout the school year to discuss school problems and ideas that would make way for improvements. Mr. Theis served as sponsor for the group of nine students. The student body, too, had a chance to contribute opinions of their own with the use of a suggestion box. An important project that the Student Council got underway was the making of school conference banners. They were put up in time for the Athletic Banquet in April. The council made money to put in their treasury by operating a few concession stands throughout the sports season, and they held a cake raffle in February to raise money for the March of Dimes. All in all the Student Council accomplished important improvements which will hopefully lead to more in future years. MIKE Acquires New Format The 1971-1972 MIKE was again published under the direction of the journalism class and teacher-adviser, Mrs. Heth. A large staff of eighteen inquisitive reporters scooped up stories. A poll conducted in the first weeks of school revealed that the student body thought the paper could become a better source of information, interpretation, service, and entertainment. With the goal of improvement in mind, the feature story took on a new dimension. Women's lib, the eighteen year old vote, and conscientious objectors sprang onto the pages of the MIKE. Two new columns, Simon Says, which provided a girl’s eye view of sports, and The Glass Menagerie, devoted to the feminine coterie, joined movie, book, and album reviews. Highlights of the year were a special eight-page issue that featured ecology and the May issue, which was dedicated to the Class of '72. Probably the biggest change thus far in the MIKE'S history occurred on December 3, 1971. Disappointed with badly mimeographed pages and undistinguishable pictures, staff members investigated the prospect of having the paper printed professionally. With the approval of the school board, the first issue of the new MIKE appeared. Gone was the mimeographed magazine style paper. In its place was a four page newspaper that looked like a newspaper! Enthusiasm to make each issue better than the previous one spurred the staff on. There were unhappy stipulations, though. The cost of offset printing was high. Sponsorships (a form of advertising) were sold; the paper which had appeared every three weeks appeared only monthly; there were no free copies to teachers, staff members, and school personnel. The journalism students gained helpful instruction when they attended the Nebraska High School Press Conference at the University of Nebraska in November. Stories were also submitted to the Quill and Scroll Writing Contest and the state newspaper writing contest. Sports columnist Margie Simonsen received notification in March that she had won a national Quill and Scroll writing award. The MIKE staff of 1971-1972 is to be commended for their progress in improving the caliber of the school paper at OHS! 44 Murray Schmoker, Becky McDonald, Jackie Smith, Ruth Bachenberg, Duane Oquist, Linda Johnson, Delores Nelson, Sally Mills, Mr. Heine, Terry Anderson, not pictured. Yearbook Advances Under Executive Set-Up A complete, informative summary of the 1971-1972 school year was compiled by the staff of the Bulldog. The staff set-up this year was quite different, having four co-editors, rather than the usual editor and assistant editor arrangement. These four, with the aid of several additional staff members, arranged and wrote the annual. Additional pictures taken by people outside of the staff and given to the annual were greatly appreciated. Several new areas were covered in the Bulldog, especially those dealing with various new girl's athletic programs. The annual remained basically the same in other areas, including stories, group pictures, and action shots. The staff has tried to give as complete a view of the school year as possible and hopes the view presented is satisfactory to all concerned. 45 Faculty And Board Rex Cadwallader Glen Cederberg Music Guidance Social Science Charles Hays Industrial Arts Sandra Heth English Journalism Dean Heine Business Education Willard Jensen Mathematics Science Larry Johnson Science Coach 46 Frances Inness Reading Language Arts Lee Ann Lee Spanish English Jean Peterson Albert Stroup Mathematics Social Science Coach Language Arts Guide Students Lawrence Theis English Library Gary Workman Amy Zimmerman Science, Driver Ed., Art Speech Coach SCHOOL BOARD Hubert Girard Phillip Nyberg John Wieseman PaulWalgren Eugene Johansen Eugene Sterup Lillian McDonald Absent 47 Personnel Helps School Run Smoothly Evelynne Oberg--Secretary Bus Drivers--Charles Kucera, Ray Richards, Leonard Mrkvicka, Morris Richards, Bob Grossnicklaus, Merv Ransom, Sr., Archie Klein, not pictured.
