Text from Pages 1 - 118 of the 1957 volume:

FOREWORD THE ROAD NOT TAKEN Two roads diverged in a yellow wood. And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveller, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair. And having perhaps the better claim. Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same. And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--I took the one less travelled by. And that has made all the difference. The activities began at 2:30 when the bands from Shelby and Osceola led the parade uptown. The senior class float received first prize with the theme Transfusion;' the junior class won the second prize with The Railroad Runs Through The Middle Of The House; and the sophomores won third prize with Sixteen Ton. As a part of the half-time ceremony of the Osceola-St. Paul game, Daryl Swanson, captain of the 1956 Bulldogs, crowned Beverly Schell Queen of Homecoming while the band formed a large heart and played Let Me Call You Sweetheart. Marilyn Triba and Bill Miller were the first attendants. Other members of the royal party were: Judy Koehler and Mervin Ransom; Iona Bernt and Vernon Kuhnel; and Charlotte Dinges and Verlie Johnston. Barbara Sue Gullberg was the flower girl, and Terry Berck was the crown bearer. Homecoming activities came to a close with the annual Homecoming dance in the school gym. Twenty-five boys reported for practice at the beginning of the 1956 Osceola High School football season. Nine of these boys were returning lettermen. The Bulldogs started the season very slowly by losing their first four games to David City, Stromsburg, St. Paul, and St. Edward. After a bad start, they came back with two victories--Polk and Genoa. A defeat by Clarks and a tie with Silver Creek put them in fourth place in the Goldenrod Conference and wrapped up the season with a 2-5-1 record. Although the season record wasn't very impressive. Coach Kenneth Sipes and his assistant Leslie Taylor, are to be commended for doing a fine job of building practically a new team. The boys were generally inexperienced; but, as the record shows, they advanced as the season progressed. We are looking forward to a successful season in 1957 since we will lose only five letter-men -- Verlie Johnston, Vernon Kuhnel, Bill Miller, Mervin Ransom, Jr., and Daryl Swanson. Mr. Taylor, Coach; Larry Zentz, Student Manager. Twenty boys, only three of them lettermen, reported to Coach Leslie Taylor for basketball practice in November. The first portion of the season was rewarding for the Varsity--Osceola won their first four games. After the holidays we sustained losses at the hands of St Mary's of David City, Aurora, and Fullerton. After achieving two more victories, we were subdued by Polk; however, we came back to win over Shelby. A one-point loss to St. Paul, and a loss to Concordia of Seward concluded the season. The County Tournament finals found us pitted against Polk for the championship, but the Bulldogs were forced to settle for runner-up. The second team was runner-up in their division of the County Tournament bowing to Stromsburg. The District Tournament paired us with St. Mary's in first-round play Although St. Mary's proved too strong for the Bulldogs, they played a fine game. The Varsity was Rodger Wright, Daryl Swanson, Mervin Ransom, Jr., Curtis Bryan, Vernon Kuhnel, William Kepner, Hardy Huggler, Larry Frizzell, Maurice Ransom, and LeRoy Rein. Because a number of younger players received a great deal of experience, we are anticipating another successful season in 1958.
