Text from Pages 1 - 82 of the 1954 volume:

THE BULLDOG PUBLISHED BY THE SENIOR CLASS OF OSCEOLA HIGH SCHOOL REMEMBER the days of the Model-T Ford, the mud roads, short skirts, the Sunday afternoon matinee, airraids we experienced, the sack of candy a nickel could buy, and the pigtails that the boys enjoyed pulling and sticking in ink-wells. Gone are these mementos of yesteryear and in their places are television, aerial photos, the atomic bomb, four-lane highways, hot-rod cars and modern school buildings. The 1954 Bulldog wishes to dedicate this annual to the spirit of progress which has been exemplified by our community and pay tribute to all the citizens who have nurtured this spirit of progress. tfer THE PRINCIPAL SPEAKS Life is not lived in a vacuum. Constantly we must associate with others and from these associations derive, satisfaction or frustration, happiness or displeasure. If there is one fact we learn in high school it is this: that we must live, work and play with others. How satisfactorily we adjust ourselves to this fact in part determines our enjoyment and pleasure in life. We who guide your high school life hope that this institution has in some way helped you to obtain at least a glimpse of the good life, the goal of life which can be yours through intelligent application and constant striving. If our school has taught you to work with others, to enjoy and appreciate their company, we have accomplished much. Further, if our classrooms have passed to you a workable understanding of the tools demanded of an intelligent citizen, we have accomplished much. The task is difficult, the way hard. Your education shows you the path. May the pages of this annual remind you of the privileges education has extended you, at the same time revealing that privilege always brings responsibility. Do not end your education upon graduation. Continue to grow in mind and spirit. Constantly seek truth and the best which is in life. We have served our purpose here if you, the students of Osceola High School, possess the spirit of adventurous search for a life built upon honesty, decency and worthy ambition. BACK ROW: W. Norton. SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY Dear Mr. Wulber: After watching tonight’s television programs, I could think of no one more appropriate to write to than you, since you played such a great part in the lives of the alumni of 54. It all began this evening as I sat down in my modern contour chair with my masterful Dashhound to enjoy a quiet evening of television. I flipped on the dial to channel ten and sat back in my easy chair, and as I did I heard a familiar voice from years past. As the picture came into view, I saw no one but dear old Louis Schott, who was such a shy boy in school. He is now announcer for that popular farm program “Let’s Cackle With Louie’’. I was just getting over the surprise of seeing Louie when the guest speaker of the evening began. He was none other than the Secretary of Agriculture, Willard Me Keag. We knew by the way he could express himself, he’d make the grade. This being too much for me, I turned to channel six, as the power of Willard’s speech exhausted me. The program on this station proved to be one of my favorites, “This is Your Life”. The Master of Ceremonies was our blushing fellow chassmate, Ray Watts. This astounded us all, as he was rather the quiet type. Undoubtedly, the job of Master of Ceremonies during his school years brought him out of his shell. As he walked down the aisle, he stopped to visit with two other “54” classmates, Bev. Bush and Maury Watts who were here on the occasion of their tenth wedding anniversary. They are living on a prosperous farm, with their five children, on the outskirts of Osceola. They proudly announced that they are raising little kings and queens to follow in their footsteps. Maury introduced another OHS alumni, the once famous racketeer. Bob Colby, whose life was going to be revealed. He is now the head warden at Alcatraz, doing much for the unfortunate. While we were waiting for the program to change, the camera was flashed over the crowd. As this happened, I caught a brief glimpse of none other than Gloria Shockey, who is now a cigarette girL The next show that come on was “Toast of the Town” with a line of chorus girls opening the show with a snappy little number. I recognized a few familiar faces in that of Marcia Burritt, Margie Mouden, and Betty Jo Quick. The next feature of the show was Laura Monson and her singing, dancing, and talking parakeet. This idea struck her during her enlistment in the Waves. Following this entertaining act was an announcement by our favorite announcer, Gary Conrad, advertising the newly perfected Richard Randall TV set made and constructed to fit into anyone’s pocket. He claimed the idea occured to him 10 years ago in OHS during a chemistry test. The program closed with an operatic solo sung by the Metropolitian star, Phyllis Branting. The next program to appear was “What’s My Line”. The Master of Ceremonies turned out t© be Rex Wieseman. As he introduced his panel, many familiar names came to my mind. On Rex’s left was the prominent Shelia Youngdahl Brown, a divorcee eight times. Apparently she just couldn’t find the right man. On her left was the “Whiz” Benny Gabriel. He tried professional football, but the pay was “Chicken feed” and he enjoys the soft life he is leading now much better. On Benny’s left was that second Wizard of Oz, Joan Rech. She is really a professor at Yale, and does “paneling” on the side line. The last panel expert was ex-Senator Alton Johnson. It seems he was kicked out of Congress at. the last session. This first contestant signed in as Charles Huggler. He stumped the panel with his unusual occupation of painting turtle shells. Following this program, five minutes of the late news came on. Seemingly the headlines were about the solving of the latest bankrobbery. Roger Watts and his man Friday, Roger Johnson, were the detectives taking the credit for this deed. And in the Society News, Ruth Sigler has been recognized as the best dressed woman of the year. He husband and 8 children haven’t stood in the way of her being well dressed. And now came the thrilling event of the evening, the Late Show. This popular program was directed and produced by Homer Hastings and Nancy Johnson. They are reported to be making millions. The show tonight was a wild western with that favorite cowboy, Wallace Daum, the tall slim woman-hater. He’s changed since high school days. With this I turned off my television set and began this letter to you, Mr. Wulber. It brings back many memories of a wonderful class of OHS. Luck and success in the following years. CLASSES The freshman Agriculture class took time from their busy schedule to pose for this picture. Did someone say that boys aren't good cooks? Not only do they turn out delicious meals but they even do the dishes. We can see from the expressions on the faces of these Siorthand students that they must be taking dictation of about 80 words a minute. It surely is tough to remember all those brief forms. FIRST NATIONAL BANK Congratulations Seniors Osceola Nebraska RAY BKANTING Well Drilling Osceola Nebraska A visit to the General Math, class proves interesting. Looks as if all the members of the class are enjoying themselves except the poor fellow at the board who is trying to work a problem. Shorthand isn't so bad, but did you ever try to type cold shorthand? That's where the difficulty comes in. MILLS, MILLS, MILLS Lawyers Osceola Nebraska RIDGE BEAUTY SHOP Fern Bennett Osceola Nebraska These boys are getting the recipe for making cream sauce. There weren't any lumps in the cream sauce when they finished so they must be good cooks. Shop is always lots of fun. At least these boys look as if they're enjoying themselves. M O R E C L A S s E S Check that recipe carefully. One-fourth cup flour instead of a 1 2 cup makes a big difference when making a cake. Practice makes perfect. This must be the truth because one member of the Typing class has 87 words a minute. Now this is why we need more money for the defense program, says Willard. This topic was one on which the American Problems Class had quite a heated debate. Someone better turn the heat down under that pan, or this group will have some extra Work to do--cleaning up the stove. This looks like a hard working group in Chemistry Class. So far this quiet little group has only blown the bottoms out of several test tubes. This page sponsored by: ELSIE CERNY Beauty Shop Osceola Nebraska CENTRAL ELECTRIC GAS CO. Festivities for the day began at two-thirty with the big parade uptown. Floats, bands, and other participants made the parade the biggest in years. In addition to the Osceola Band, the school-band from Shelby also participated. Three judges were chosen to name the tree best floats in the parade as they passed in review in the afternoon affair. First prize was awarded to the seniors; second prize to the FHA; and third prize to the freshman. At the game in the evening during the half time interval, the actual homecoming program was carried-out. First the floats again paraded the field, then the homecoming Queen and football captain! we,re announced.During this time the Osceola Band was forming a heart in the middle of the field and while the Queen was being crowned, the band played “Let Me Call You Sweetheart”. Beverly Bush was announced as Queen and Maury Watts Captain. The attendants were as follows: Marcia Burritt, Marjorie Mouden, Ruth Sigler, and Sheila Youngdahl; the boys were Ray Watts, Bob Colby, Gary Conrad, and Ben Gabriel. Following the game, a Homecoming dance was held in the Auditorium with the OHS Alumni invited as well as the visiting students from Polk and Shelby. FOOTBALL SQUAD The Osceola Bulldogs started the season with only eight letter men returning. They started out very slowly by losing their first two games to David City 20 to 0, and to Stromsburg by a 7 to 0 score. They took four in a row by defeating St. Paul 13 to 0, Shelton 20 to 0, Polk 33 to 0, and Genoa 24 to 12. They lost to highly regarded Clarks by a 33 to 0 score and ended the season by a 26 to 6 win over Silver Creek. This very good season was due to the excellent coaching of Robert Manley and Ronald York who had to build up almost a whole new team. ALEXAND FURNITURE CO.
