Graduates: New York, New York August 1, 1963 In May of the year 1963, my partner and I, who work for the writers of Believe it or Not, were asked to go to my home town of Osceola, Nebraska, at the time of the annual Alumni Banquet, to make a survey of the members of the Class of 53. I enjoyed the visit there, as I remembered nearly everyone, and it proved very interesting. To my partner and myself to learn of the professions of those 30 students who were graduated only 10 years ago. Several were unable to attend the banquet, some we visited, and others we learned were in all parts of the world. The results of our survey were amazing. We hope this information will be of interest to you: Larry Snodgrass, former O. H. S. sports star, is coach of the famous Irish team, Notre Dame. Always having the desire to be well dressed, JoAnn Wieseman designs costumes for the well known movie stars. DeLoss Lesuer is very hard to keep in touch with, but the last we hear, he was re-retired. Don Sterup, formerly known as Lightning, took so many vitamin pills that he won the Olympic Races held this year. Yvonne Anderson also took these vitamins, but they affected her growth in a different manner. Oodles now is making the sum of $300. a week as fat lady in the circus. Wasn't it a coincidence that two graduates of this class have made circus life their career? A. C. Schott, after realizing he didn't enjoy farming, joined Ringley Bros. Circus. High school dramatic coaching proved helpful as he is now master of ceremonies. Herman Anderson and Gregg Eklund, always good friends, are still together. Gregg is a Medic” in the service and Herman is an army Captain. Richard Peterson is enjoying his position as an Ag. instructor at the University of Nebraska. Joanie Johansen was hard to find but thats because we learned she and Jim had left the farm for a month's vacation. Speaking of far away places, Leila Colby and her husband own a hotel in New York. They went to Niagra Falls on their honeymoon and still haven’t returned. Bill Bryan decided against following the career of his famous ancester, William Jennings Bryan. He is still working with hot rod cars, in fact Tie is manufacturing them for the California patrolmen. Have you read the new book Lost but not Least ? James Pulliam wrote this while visiting in London. After 10 years, Bob Merrick has solved one of his old problems. Being a policeman he has a good reason for taking home lost girls! Caroline Rhodes is enjoying her position as United States Ambassadoress to India. John Miller’s talents have been greatly developed since high school. His experimental work with The Atomic Bomb has been very successful. Guess What? Herman Carlson is a traveling evangelist. P. S. We'll never know how he became so inspired! Sharon Berck, now a famous singer, is entertaining the servicemen in Europe. Mrs. Lewis Thelen, former Bonnie Gibbins, and her husband, manage a large horse ranch in Wyoming. She is still giving piano lessons. Milton Marak has certainly profited by his Boy's State experiences. Clem is a senator from Illinois. Because of his cherry disposition Jack Conrad chose the profession of a mortician. Business is good, but we've heard several complaints about his Cozy Coffin commercials on television. Anita Branting enjoyed Camp Kwianis so well she now manages a girls summer camp and vacations during the winter at Sun Valley, Idaho. Of course, Danny Burritt married Glenda. They live in Colorado and manufacture potato chips in competition with Kitty Clover. Their delicious little morsels, which they call Spudsies, are gaining world fame. Donna Carlson, Grid-Queen of 52, was offered a movie contract. Suprisingly, she declined this offer and chose to continue her work as librarian at Nebraska Love Memorial Library. Jenonne Dawes is certainly busy. She is the Polk County Extension Agent now and is hurrying to prepare for the 4-H entries at the county fair. No doubt you have read in the sports news about Alfred Hanson. While visiting friends in Switzerland he became interested in skiing. The latest reports from his doctor are that his leg will be healed in time for him to participate in the Winter Carnival. Richard Miller is still taking orders, but just from his old pal. He is a butler for Senator Marak. One member of this class is fond of children. Carlene Dinges is matron of the St. Mary's Orphanage in Denver, Colorado. Bryan Nelson’s practicing has certainly proved worthwhile. He is touring the Middle-West playing his Trumpet. Jean Richards, efficient typist of The Mike, is one of the staff members of Good Housekeeping . What a class! ! Yours truly, Believe It or Not CLASS WILL We the class of 53 do proclaim this to be our last will and testament and leave to the juniors our abilities, as follows: Jo Ann Wieseman to Ruth Sigler my watch, so Ruthis won't always have to ask what time it is. As the band was doing various formations, the parade consisting of the floats and the convertible carrying the five candidates for Oueen, entered the field. At that time the prize winning floats were announced. FHA received fust place; Class ol '55, second; and the Class of '53 received third place. These floats were judged during the parade up town in the afternoon. The climax of the ceremony occured when Dick Peterson, selected as King by the football squad, crowned Donna Carlson, Grid-Iron Queen of '53. The Queen was nominated by the football squad, and chosen by popular vote ot the entire student body. The attendants for the King and Queen were Carlene Dinges, Gregg Eklund, JoAnn Wieseman, Don Sterup, Anita Branting, Herman Anderson, Caroline Rhodes, and Jack Conrad. Mary Wobig was flower girl and Steven Johnson was crown Dearer. A Homecoming dance in the high school gym followed the victory. FRONT ROW: Herman Anderson, Rex Wieseman, Gary Conrad, Don Sterup, Jack Conrad, Bob Merrick, Dick Peterson FOOTBALLRECORD The Osceola gridiron team won three games and tied one in a drab season. Lack of experience proved to be a tough obstacle for the Bulldogs as only a handful of veterans remained from the previous year. The season was opened with a creditable showing against strong David City and fine victory over the Stromsburg Vikings. St. Paul scored an upset to win 20 to 7. Injuries to Larry Snodgrass were a blow to Osceola hopes for the season. Shelton took advantage of Osceola bobbles to tie 12 to 12 and Polk won a free scoring contest 44 to 25. Genoa proved easy. Clarks combined fine passing and running to romp 46 to 0. SilverCreek was stubborn | be fore yielding 7 to 0, Outstanding linemen for the Bulldogs were Snodgrass, Conrad. Edlund, Bryan, Peterson and Sterup, while Anderson was the leading ball carrier. All are seniors. Watts is a fine back who will return. In outside competition the Bulldogs fared less well and the regular season's record included eight wins and eight losses. Osceola lost in early competition to strong teams. David City, Fullerton, Aurora and Clay Center each scored decisive wins. Victories include wins over Silver Creek, Clarks, Genoa, Polk, Rising City and two over Stromsburg. The thriller of the year game was played in disposing of the aroused Vikings of Stromsburg in an overtime game 52 to 50. The brilliant Clarks team fought to the final whistle before bowing to Osceola 55 to 52. It was their first defeat. Bleak days faced the Bulldogs as the season drew to a close. Shelby, St. Bonaventure and St. Edward all scored victories while Osceola salvaged a win over the weak St. Paul team. This cinched the conference championship. Conrad, Snodgrass and Eklund were the big point getters for the team while Sterup, Anderson, Watts and Gross-nicklaus helped carry the load in regular season. The second team won seven of its games. Miller, Gabriel and Peterson were the stalwarts of this team.
