Senror Class Hrstory On a sunny mornrng 1n September of 1936 a group of sm1l1ng faces scrubbed shlny clean appeared IH the doorway of Mrs Merrxcks room for thelr frrst day of school Klndergar ten was a lot of fun drawlng cuttmg color mg and pastmg M1ss Nantkes taught us rn the fxrst grade We sat on our llttle red chalrs ln a Seml clrcle and learned to count and to read out of l1ttle green books about D1ck and Jane Dur1ng the next three years our teachers were Mrs Clemens M1ss Rasp and M1ss Hal qulst respectlvely Jeamce Schott came rn the second grade and Ramona Walgreen Jomed us ID the fourth The annual Polk County Spell1ng Contest was an outstandmg event Jean1ce Schott one of the contestants won three blue rxbbons On Mothers Day when we were rn the fourth grade we presented a play for our mothers Our rhythm band made several pub l1c appearances dur1ng these f1rst few years of school We wore l1ttle red capes and hats as we made muslc w1th stlcks oatmeal boxes trlangles and tambourmes In the flfth grade we gave up our rhythm band for tonettes and some of us began play 1ng real musxcal mstruments 1n the newly or gamzed school band M1ss Schlnzel was our teacher that year Upon entermg the department we consldered ourselves much older because we then passed from room to room Just lrke the h1gh school students and we even had a few partres Just l1ke therrs Jumor Grrardm Jomed us rn the slxth grade and Lee Adams Jomed us 1n the seventh grade J1m Inness and Lee Adams used to have fun chasxng each other around the de partment assembly In the course of one of these lxvely games of tag they accldentally broke the bust of Abe Lmcoln that had been rn the room for years and years Recesses were spent argumg about who was to be on whose baseball team and Just as everythmg was flnally settled tnot always to the satlsfactron of alll the bell would rlng and we would have to go back to classes Our teachers m the department were M1ss Swanson M1ss Duncan M1ss Anderson and Mrs Mxller When we reached the elghth grade we took a tmp to Lmcoln where we v1s1ted Morrlll Hall Mlllers Candy Kltchen and other mterestmg places At last we recexved our erghth grade dlplomas We were ready to enter hxgh school w1th memorles of many class pxcnrcs Senior Class The reporter paused and took a deep breath as he entered the door on whxch the followmg words appeared rn bold black letters Vrctor L Mangelsen Edxtor rn Chref Osceola Darly Chromcle Well 1ts about t1me you got here ' Behlnd the large oak desk nearly hldden un der a pyramld of unassorted papers we see the edxtor hlmself a man of large buxld w1th harr that IS hghtly greylng at the temples Ten years ago, Vrcs rich uncle dxed, leavmg hun a and all the other fun of our grammar school days Then came the happy h1gh school days Twenty c1ght of us had survxved our grade school experrences and were now on the thresh old of a new and exc1t1ng 11fe Our fxrst excrt 1ng exper1ence was Freshman 1n1t1at1on After that day I belleve all of us felt that we were full fledged hrgh school students A number of the Freshres were selected to serve at the Jun1or Sen1or banquet that year They were dressed as sallors The Sophomore year was a very uneventful year as It usually IS for every class but we d1d sponsor a very successful all hlgh school box socxal Exght of us ushered at Commence ment and Baccalaureate Our Jumor year was fllled to capacxty w1th mterestmg experlences Flrst our play Local Boy Makes Good was presented on November 13 to a record breakmg crowd Then came Jumor Rule Day which we d1d up mce and sweet' The Jumor Sen1or Banquet and Prom cllmaxed May for that year The theme car rled out for the occasion was Mardl Gras MHFCIH Schnelder was toastmlstress Our Sen1or year was character1zed by many events whlch seem to f1ll most Sen1or years The Gr1d1ron Coronatlon 1n Wh1Ch Ramona Walgreen was crowned queen and Bob Johan sen acted as Honorary Football Captam was held as a part of our flrst Homecommg Sneak Day was spent by the entlre class 1n Omaha Boys Town and the alrport were our mam Mama proved to be as successful as our Jun 1or class play Almost all of the sm1l1ng faces that appeared that mornlng rn September of 36 have d1sap peared but seven have remamed These are Tom Ball Laura Hartson J1m Inness Colleen Malek Sxd Sxgler and Marc1a Schnelder Of all those that had entered dur1ng thelr hlgh school days only Lo1s Dmges and Inez Swantek remaln Erme Glelm IS at Polk the Seaburg ers are near Shelby Lucllle Need lSchuttJ IS rnarrled Eugene Rhodes IS at Benedxct Now we are on the last lap of our hrgh school days Some are sad others are happy But 1n years to come wherever well be or whatever we re do1ng we ll always look back on our school days as the most care free days of our l1ves Prophecy huge sum of money whrch he 1nvested rn a newspaper Sorry s1r I came as fast as I could Never mmd that Kresha lets get down to busrness Each spr1ng all over the country ano ther class graduates from hrgh school Twenty years ago you and I d1d that very thlng S1nce that t1me the town of Osceola has grown xnto a c1ty we now have two newspapers trafflc lrghts and
