How much do you know about the teachers, who spend half of each day with you. live days a week? How many of these teachers are married. single, have children, grandchildren, etc? Oh. you don't know? Well read on. The faculty is composed of nineteen married teachers, fourteen single teachers, and one engaged teacher. Two of these married teachers are husband and wife. an unusual situation at Smith High, as there has never been a couple teaching together in the high school of South Norfolk. The children of the faculty members total twenty-seven. their ages ranging from two months to thirty-four years at the time of writing, and there are seven grand-children. The teaching experience ranges from one to forty-two years. Eighteen teachers live in the South Norfolk community, while the rest come from Norfolk. Portsmouth and the outlying areas. Miss West comes the greatest distance: from Hickory, the Dismal Swamp , as she puts it. Former graduates of South Norfolk High School teach in several schools in the system, but, this year, none of the teachers at Smith High is an alumnus of South Norfolk schools. However, Mr. Brickell, the assistant principal, and Miss Voliva and Mrs. Johnson, office clerks. are graduates of South Norfolk High Schools. MR. JACK R. Programs ranged from quiz shows. to the man-less wedding put on by the Junior Class. to the annual Christmas assembly given by the chorus class. Also. during the Christmas season the Senior Class presented a pageant of the Nativity. On another occasion the Great Bridge High School Band gave a con- cert. Two of the assemblies were held in the gym: one for the wrestling match with Beaumont. and the other for the girls' basketball game. which turned into quite an exciting hour. The honor societies of our school. the Beta Club and the Quill and Scroll Chapter, took in new members during the assem- blies devoted to them. Mr. Harrison and Mrs. Odom presented the football boys and the cheerleaders with their stars and hrst-year letters. The art room was beseiged and almost wrecked for several weeks prior to the Senior Dance. Approximately 600 individual snowflakes were carefully cut out and decorated. What appeared to be a forest of trees was set up and sprayed with white paint. Sequins were placed in the bark of the whitegtrees. Pine and cones were gathered as decorations for the ledges. Many cones were sprayed with red and white paint and arranged as attrac- tive settings for each table. Screens were made to create a more effective atmosphere with the spot lights. The effect of snow was gotten by placing sheets under and around the trees. The scenery was highlighted by a mar- ble fountain amidst a cluster of lights and pine trees. We Walked :bro a Wrhfer Wonderland Upon entering this precisely finished setting, one felt he was stepping into a glittering winter fairyland. The overhead was covered by sparkling snowflakes. dang- ling from what appeared to be a dark and wintery sky. They added a brilliant backdrop to the snow-be-fallen Snow Flake Ball. The wintery appearance that pine and white birch trees presented was emphasized by the layers of snow beneath the trees and by the snow men place cards, who stood eagerly searching for their namesakes to come and claim them. 55. Two of the dramatic students landed parts in Eliz- abeth the Queen, presented at the Little Theatre. Marjorie Jones and Jimmy Perkinson acquired a touch of professionalism as they worked with real actors and actresses. About half of the class combined their efforts and took part in a play at the Chesapeake Avenue Meth- odist Church at Christmas. It was led and directed by Wilbur Keys, recreational director in South Norfolk. Mr. Jackson started a modern-dancing course for the drama class in the latter part of the year. He worked with Miss Winslow in giving the students a wider understanding of dramatics. One of the plays presented by the girls in the class was Legend of the Lake. Four on a Heathv was the play presented by the boys from the class. This was given on March 3 at Churchland to compete in the forensic meets where it won a Distinguished rating. G46 ' miie e 65:45 To learn more about teaching is the chief aim of the Future Teaeher's Club. This aim is recognized by the projects and activities conducted by the organization. They were in charge of four W.F.O.S. Radio programs during National Education Week, Other activities of the club included a visit to the Edu- cational Train, the presentation of a book to the library, their able assistance to the Student Council during College and Career Day and to the P.T.A. with their spaghetti supper. Substitute teaching in the grammar schools, also helped to enlighten the students in the art of teaching. MEMBERS-From Left to Right:First Row- ie ml Secretarial work has become a preferred ca- reer for young women in recent years. The Commercial Club was started for the purpose of promoting this interest even further. as good sec- retaries are needed in all businesses. The activities of the club include films, speakers, a yearlyvpresentation of a book to the library, helping a needy family at Christmas. field trips. and a picnic at the end of the year. Members are taken from commer- cial students who want to pursue this interest further than the confines of the classroom will allow. At their meetings. the club often has speakers, such as Miss Leigh. herself a former commercial teacher. s. . W c ter: Ea: ' in' 911:- i f! Q3 41 Commercial Club Officers. Franz left I0 P'f,Ql1I.' Before the season began, this was expected to be the big year for the Tigers. Many of the regulars from last year's team were back. But, bad luck began to take over. After winning the first game at Suffolk, injuries began to pile up in practice and games. Slowly the chances for a championship team .5 slipped away. They got a big boost when they beat Granby in an exciting game. In losing the Hermitage game, the boys seemed to lack something. In the next game, Mr. Harrison's boys ruined Cradock's home-coming by beating them. Then they began a home stand during which they played their last four games. In the nrst two home games, they lost to William Fleming and Hampton. Team and school morale was on the decline Next came the Home coming game As compared with the preceding homecomings this one was dead The spirit hit an all time low Without the crowd to back them the team lost During the next week before the Thanksgiving Day game with Norview a big spirit drive began It was a success As many have said this was the best game played in South Norfolk in many years Although the team lost tlus game they proved the great team they really were by fighting to the finish never giving up SCHEDULE They Suffolk Wilson Maury Granby Hermitage Cradock Hampton Fishburne Fleming Norview Sept Oct Nov Stratton makes an end sweep against Norview on Turkey Day i 9 - Q Q , Q I . Each year, the S. C. A. strives to outdo itself from the year before, when Homecoming rolls around. Plans begin far in advance for the parade, football game, half time program, and the dance. Classes, clubs, businesses and other organi- zations donated beautifully decorated floats and cars to the parade this year. The Home- coming Queen, Miss Bette Rae Curling, with her two attendants, Flora Eason and Sharon Williams, was crowned by Captain Baker before the game began. During the half-time, the band presented a unique program which sati- rized the different phases of the life of an alumnus. Fishburne Military Academy won by a score of 19-14, but this did not dampen the spirits of those who enjoyed music by The Knights at the Homecoming Dance sponsored by the Beta Club. When this Tiger was finished, it was used on the field for the team to burst through. Jimmy Fentress, Diane Madrin, and Carol Mizelle did the art work. Mr. Marshalls Junior Varsity football was a green, but willing squad, consisting of twenty members. Their record 12-65 does not give a full picture of the qualities of the team, because four of these games were lost by a margin of six or fewer points. The team was helped with the addition of Lonnie Bryant and Larry Dillon from the Junior High. Injuries con- sistently plagued, the team. Among the injured were John Bondurant, broken ankleg Edsel Pritchard, broken legg Billy Thompson, one of the better players, missed the last couple of games because of appendicitis. Everett Edwards was pro- moted to varsity at the end of the season and was a decided asset in the Norview game on Thanksgiving Day. All of these boys will be a great help to the varsity next season. Highlights of the season were Thompson's hard running and defensive play as a line backer, Edwards thrusts through the line, Henley's passing, and Stringfield's mad dashes for the goal line. Billy Thompson is on the move as a Cradock man moves up Henley is number 43, Johnny Bondurant. 30, 4. Jalal. ,' : . 4. . .4g s- r xi WI. M 6 Q' Q 0 45? gk 27 39'm?f.., 41'Q5'3'7 ' 15339 .. Although their record of wins and losses does not look very favor- able, the boys always played their best. Fine playing was demonstrated by the graduat- ing Bill Story, Phil Davis, Willis Bell. and Allen Templeton. Story. the teams captain. leading scorer, and rebounder was indispensable to his team. Mr. Marshall, in his first year as varsity coach, was a help and an inspiration to the boys. The team hit a streak of bad luck at mid term. when Willis Bell and Kenny Wyatt both hurt their ankles. and Davis was laid up with a fever. Wyatt and Davis returned to the team. but Bell was lost for the remainder of the season. His spirited play- ing was missed. In order to make up for this bad luck. the starting five from the J. V. squad were brought up to the varsity. All ol' these boys played some in the remaining games. If YOU were one of the many who enjoyed the entertainment provided by the dance, I'm sure you will never forget it. The theme, April Showers, was carried out in every detail and it included a'big rainbow, a beautifully deco- rated trellis and many bright colored flowers. The main attraction was, of course, the dance band, The Midnighgefsf' composed of some of our students. The dreamy music was very enjoyable to dance by, and to add to the enjoyment, everyone did the Bunny7Hop. During intermission, Betsy Thomas presented gifts to the sponsors, Miss Price and Miss Gwaltney. They also recognized their President, Jimmy Bocock. Nature played a little part too, by giving us some real April Showers. When the dance was over, everyone went away with very pleasant memories. - - I K HN I-it It certainly looks like everyone is having fun at the Sophomore Dance. was W,,..fv- .- Ronny White and Billy Skenes seem to themselves. enjoying jf. paul mirn rfmtw . ag and ig. . A ii Ti 3 General jackson's Tomb in Lexington. A stream at Natural Bridge. 0 0 l 0 ' By Betty Hassell Could this be heaven? Well, -not quite. It's S. l. P. A. in Lexington, Virginia. What causes anyone to ask this question? The tact that the convention is held at Washington and Lee University La boys school? with the help of the Virginia Military Institute LV. M. l. J which interests the girls. Highlights of the convention are dances at each of these colleges. There are approximately l,bUU girl delegates to occupy the boys. Who has been to this wonderful place? Well, -eleven of Smith High's own students, seven representing the annual start and four from the radio station. The expression S. l. P. A. stands tor Southern interscholastic Press Association. lt sounds as though the convention is just one big party, but there are classes, clinics, and panel discussions on radio and yearbook work to attend. Special assemblies are held with famous people as speakers. This year Rube Goldberg, a cartoonist with the King Syndicate and Pauline Fredriek, a woman news correspondent were the outstanding guests. This was the tirst year that the radio had enter- ed the S. 1. P. A. competition and they were pleased to receive an achievement award. 'l'he Tiger for 1955 was given the trophy award the highest in the Group 2 Yearbook Division. ln superstition, the delegates went to Natural Bridge on the Saturday before the Awards Banquet. lThe lasttime the trophy was won, -they went there and it was considered good luck.J Also they were careful to sit at the sametable as the one at which they had won before. Although there were thirteen people at the table, the annual did win. On the last day, a tired but happy group left Lexington tor home. Ready to leave but hoping to return another year. Perhaps the most improved member of the team, Punky Richards, set two ot the records. The records he set were in the shot put and in the discus. Coach Smith says that he is expecting Punky to place in State competition mext year. The team this year has won only two meets, but by beating Suffdk, it set the third record. This was the lirst Group l team to be beaten by a high school in South Nortolk. The team might have won more meets it Bill Story had not been injured early in the season. Another boy who has shown great improvement is Billy jones. jones was elected captain ot the team. He has worked hard in the dashes. Aubrey Parkington has worked hard in the 440 and broad jump. Tommy Batten has been consistent in the pole vault. He also set a school record of nine feet nine inches. Crawtord Walters is the best hurdler on the team. QQ-.Q Up and over! Billy. And away it goes. Several Beta members worked hard to make the event a success, but because of the lack of support of other members and the student body, the attempt for another annual spring dance failed. Beta members are not wholly responsible for this, and those who were at the dance spent a most enjoyable evenlng together.. BETA APPING By Sally Best happy. These persons were tapped into the Beta Club. The program for this important event was very informal. A report concerning the recent Beta Convention in Rich- mond was given, reports of the local club projects, which included a skit, were given. The objectives of the Beta Club were remembered by these happy people when the impressive tapping ceremonybegan. Character, Achievement, and Lead- ership are the important qualities of these students. The Seniors, who were tapped, were Betty Skinner and Barbara Weise. The juniors were Mary Sue Ainsley, Carolyn Blades, john Chappell, jackie Guthrie, Claudia Leggett, and Marilyn Nuchols. T TTIDG SHEETS Valtditturian The first of two students whom the TATTLER has chosen to salute is Patty Radke, our Valedic- torian for 1956. Patty has contributed to her school inmany ways. She is a very sincere, hardworking student whose talents in rmsic have added greatly to our band and have brought her state recognition. She has worked willingly and faithfully with our radio station, WFOS, and her beautifully planned devotional periods have provided both students and teachers with a perfect beginning for each new day. Patty hasmade excellent scores on several apti- tude tests and has taken Part in the WRVA Radio Quiz series. She plans to further her education and enter the teaching profession, majoring in mathemat- ics and science. In addition to her studies, -Patty has been presi- dent of the Future Teachers of America and has been quite active in the Beta Club. In closing, the TA ITLER would like to say, Many thanks for everything, Battyf' and we extend to you our very best wishes for a successful and happy future. Salutatnrian fl'he second student whom the 'l'A'lf'l'Ll1K sa- lutes is Sally Best, -our Salutatorian for l956. Sally came to Smith at the beginning of her junior year, and since that time, 'shehas made quite a commendable record for herself. She immediately became an important part of our music department by contributing her talents both in singing and playing the piano. She repre- sented our school as a delegate to S. l. P. A. last year and soon found she had been selected as the Business Manager of her annual for l956. ln Septerrber of her Senior year, Sally took over her duties as president of the Beta Club. ln this capacity, she has served with grace and dignity. Also, she has been an active member of the Quill and Scroll Honor Society. Sally has contributed her time, talents, and ef- forts to the S. C. A. and many other organizations within our school. As a fine student, her work is of the highest quality. Although this seems incredible, Sally still finds the time to serve her church and community in numer ous ways. The TA'l'TLliR feels that this student is, indeed, a credit to our school, and we wish for you, Sally, the very best in the years ahead. 50 ff ' TATTLER A big surprise for three Sophomores is their appointment as Editor-in-Chief of next year's TATTLER.
