OSBOURN HIGH SCHOOL MANASSAS, VA. 1978 - 1979 EYRIE Reflections of a world changing. A world in const ant motion flashing by us, affecting our lives, the way we live, what we do with our time and who we 2 victory, trying to reach beyond the goals that those before us have achieved. Finding ways of expressing ourselves, we compete with each other, striving for perfection. We learn to accept defeat as well as 3 Our lives are changing, growing with each season, influenced by, the past and the present. Accepting both the rain and the sunshine we unite creating a beautiful rainbow. 4 Looking back on our lives we may see where we’ve been. But only by looking around may we see where we are today. 5 Being with friends, joining in activities, helps time to escape us quickly. Soon all our high school activities will only be special memories which we can reflect upon. 6 My mind is a mirror that reflects over time, retracing over memories looking back on what is mine. 8 We dedicate ... 10 FALL ’78 September 5, 1978 was a day of returning — the students returned to their books and the teachers returned to their black boards. Amid moans and groans over the end of the summer and the be- ginning of homework, the stu- dents sensed a new feeling of excitement. For the first time in a long while, the Senior. |unior and Sophomore classes were fa- miliar with the building and go- ing hack was almost like a home- coming. Due to orientation, the new Freshmen class had a sound idea of where they were going. Infact, there was a general feeling of anticipation, inspite of fore- bodings at the home work pros- pect. As the day progressed, students began to make new discoveries. The Freshmen learned that high school was going to be a lot differ- ent from junior high. The Soph- omores rejoiced in moving up from “frosh” status; the Juniors were looking forward to being upper classmen ... And for the Seniors? There was a feeling of relief. They had finally made it! The first day back to school — It was a day of many emotions, but everyone was sure of one thing: That this year would be only as good as he or she made it, and all were prepared to put forth their best. r 13 CLASS OF 1982 Pam Alhrite Billy Alerding Frederika Alexander Ricky Allen Andrea Altamn Sam Aylesworth Bryan Bannach Chris Bannach Tyanne Barbour Joe Belofsky George Benlrem Wayne Berton Ed I know it’s late, but I usually am But the words wouldn't come until This P.M. I wanted it to be kind of special. You see, I love you very much even though we Don’t agree. I am able to forget and to live In the present. One never knows whether time might Be of essence. Let us not wait for tragedy To come. To get us together before this year’s Done. I am guilty of acting in a childlike Manner, Though time is not my own, I would roll Out the banner Just to talk to you once more and Forget the past, Just to smile with you once more And be glad at last. Teresa Farris Class of ’79 Bill My grandfather was a big, kind man with a very distinguished name — William Walter Matlick, but all his friends called him Bill. He was six feet two and weighed over two hundred pounds, bald, with gray hair around the sides of his head. He chewed tobacco and always had a big wad of it in his mouth. My grandfather had many friends, I guess because of all the nice things he did for people. He had one friend, Steve, who although legally blind could still see a little. They used to play checkers a lot, and when Steve could no longer make out the black ones, Grandpa paint- ed them white. He loved kids and they were at- tracted to him — especially the lit- tles ones. He taught school for forty — four years and kept a paddle — two inches thick with holes drilled in it. Every kid he ever spanked signed his name on it because Grandpa always explained that the smack was for their own good and told them why he had paddled them. One day I came home from a track meet to learn the Grandpa had died. Dad said he'd been out work- ing in the garden and had had an- other heart attack. Two boys found him and told a neighbor, but he died before the ambulance could get him to the hospital. 1 didn't go to the funeral home or to his funeral. People thought I was crazy. I didn't even stay home from school. I wasn't being disrespectful, but 1 wanted to remember my grandfather alive. Me, sitting on his knee while he told stories about the farm in West Virginia or about go- ing to Pike's Peak for a week and spending only $23.25 — including food and lodging. Him taking me to Drug Fair when 1 was little and giving me a quarter to spend any way I wanted. It was things like these I wanted to remember, not him lying in a satin — lined box with his blood drained out. I didn’t cry when he died and I haven’t cried for him since. Some- times at night, after a long day, my eyes get watery and my heart hurts, but I don't cry. I just feel that he’s away on a trip visiting friends and relatives back in West Virgina, and I keep waiting for him to come home. To drive up in his big green Chrysler with a wad of tobacco in his jaw. The schedule’s loose, The day is clear. This was to be graduation year. The test's a cinch, The questions clear. The answer’s at hand, The pen does adhere. The paper is neat, I know that I’ve passed. My ship has arrived, A graduate at last! My parents prepared for my college career My father's estatic, My mother says, “Dear!” I gave it my all, Or at least my second best So how in the hell did 1 fail the test? E.N. Glish Nature's Orchestra The woods are nice At night When I am alone My ears ring with the sounds of silence. Nature is never quiet It never sleeps It knows no boundaries Does not the wind blow as well here and there Both up and beyond. A procession of ants thunder by — a noise matched by no storm ever known. A fly buzzes by — and the planes' engines resound throught the valley. Nature's orchestra No need for applause The audience sleeps. Floyd Hoskinson Class of '79 Life Life is like the weather: It has its highs and lows Life has many storms, Though some may pass more quietly than others. The winds of life may blow in blue skies of gray clouds. But a sunny day is always in the forecast. Martha Kline Class of ’80 61 The Wall Along my travels, I came across a wall. I first tried to open the doors of the wall, but found them tightly bolted. 1 next tried to break down the wall with kindness, Only to realize that it grew taller — and me smaller. Then 1 tried to break down the wall with joy and happiness, But the joy of the wall had been overpowered by its own sadness. Finally, I tried to break down the wall with love. But seeing that the wall knew only of protection, 1 was forced to go on. Leaving the wall to grow — and me to remember. Cathy Waugh Class of '80 62 63 My Pledge Looking over the hills and mountains In my life, 1 see towards the future. But there are many roads to choose. And each vanishes in the distance. I must hold onto the ideas and beliefs That will help guide me to my destination. So I may make some contribution to life. ADMINIST ON 66 SECRETARIES 67 ENGLISH Top L: Mr. Geissler.
