No one can ‘play it by ear' all the way through high school and expect to emerge with any sort of decent education. A student has to work to know his lines. Knowledge of his subjects gives a student security, in the same way that knowing his lines makes an actor feel more at ease. A knowledgeable student gives a better performance, and he enjoys doing it more than one who tries to ‘fake it.’ No matter how long a play runs, no one performance is exactly like any other. A school day is very much the same. The trivial incidents of each day not only serve to prevent monotony, but also make each day a unique experience in the lives of the students who spend a fourth of their day in the halls and classrooms of this building. 9
