Hi-J acket, 1963 FOREWORD Man has always been continuously moving through the centuries using his genius to thrust himself forward in fields of knowledge. Armies of the conquerors have often marched over the nations of the world; but this never stopped progress. We, the Annual Staff, have chosen feet as the theme of our annual because it closely illustrates man's marching onward. Now we, the Annual Staff, invite you to journey with us through a year at Osbourn. Here is the 1963 Annual. •V If CONTENTS Principal's Address............3 Dedication.....................4 Honor..........................5 Administration.................6 Faculty........................8 Senior........................15 Junior........................35 Sophomore.....................45 Freshman......................53 Eighth Grade..................61 Sports........................67 Organizations.................97 Activities...................129 Advertisements...............137 Mr. William R. Murphy Principal Osbourn High School Manassas. Virginia PRINCIPAL’S ADDRESS I am very privileged to have this space to record a few words to you, the students of Osbourn. It has always been my wish to know each of you personally, but due to the increase in enrollment and the expansion of the facilities, this has become an impossibility. There have been many times when I have talked with you, especially the seniors, about your plans for your future, about diligent application, about a sense of loyalty, and about your obligations and responsibilities not only to others but to yourselves. If I have not conveyed to you the importance of these principles, please allow me to stress probably the most important thing of all. This is your acceptance and practice of your own chosen religion. If you do this, all other ingredients of happiness will follow their natural courses. 3 DEDICATION Honor, dignity, integrity, and the love and welfare for those students who have passed before him can best describe the person we honor with the dedication of the Hi-Jacket of 1963. It was not a difficult task for the staff of this year's Hi-Jacket to select a person worthy of its dedication. In this person, we have selected someone who, through his many years of service in this county, has always put the welfare of all students above every principle of day by day life. His devotion to his work can best be exemplified by a few simple words so often spoken by him, and we quote, The doors to my heart and my home are always open to those students seeking help regardless of the time of day. In behalf of the Hi-Jacket staff and the student body we dedicate this annual of 1963 to Mr. Joseph Fortuna. 4 HONOR To one who has guided us in many ways on the field, in the classroom, and as Assistant Principal; who has led us on to newer, greater heights of endeavor and achievement, and whose sincere devotion and loyal service to the school and to the students have endeared him to all of us -- we honor Mr. James J. Leo. 5 Our administration leaders and our instructors have guided us through the sunshine and shadows of a busy year. They have kept us on the right path through expert counseling; they have led us to acquire knowledge; they have encouraged us when difficulties and disappointments came. The result of their valuable training and guidance is apparent now in excellent student development. Their work will live on through the years to come. A senior's year is filled with excitement, enthusiasm, sorrow, and various senti ments. Each senior, while he is looking forward to graduation and independence, looks back on his years in school with fondness and regret at having to leave the many wonderful times he has enjoyed. He knows that he will never be as totally free of responsibility as he has been for the past five years. The Hi-Jacket staff wishes each senior success in the future and hopes that each of them will often look with fond memories upon his 1963 Hi-Jacket. Now they know how it feels to be a part of Osbourn High School. At the beginning of the year, three members of the freshman class made the J. V. cheering squad, while the boys lent their time and energy to football, basketball, and other sports. In the classroom, some of them battled with algebraic expressions and the conjugation of Latin verbs while others taking music trained their voices by singing ma, me, mi daily. After reviewing this past year, it is easy to see that it has been filled with fun and success; and that they will strive diligently to make their future years as full of accomplishments as their first years. They elected the following officers: LeRoy Smith, President: Ricky Watts, Vice President; Kay Browne, Secretary; Jean McDonalds, Treasurer; and Johnny Brown, Representative to Council. The sponsor, Miss Orlich, and the officers worked hard together, and led their class very capably. Head Coach: Mr. Ralph Hendrix VARSITY We shall always remember this season as a very successful one, because with our game against Edison, came the end of a seventeen game losing streak. This triumph was partly due to the fact that during the later part of the season, an atmosphere of determination prevailed. This, coupled with the fact that the tiresome practice sometimes lasted until after dark, brought the team through to win those last few contests. The perfect end to the season came with our magnificent win over our arch rival, Garfield. Although the 8th grade football team was not a victorious one, the boys worked hard to develop an outstanding future varsity team. They practiced good sportsmanship and gained much-needed experience. The boys realized the necessity of working together and immediately adherred to it. A team is not a good team unless each player recognizes the importance of every other player. Osbourn’s 8th grade football team contained this quality and, therefore, each boy played as if he were a part of the team and not an individual player. But I want it!! Backfield: Steve Peterson. Bill Iddings, Bill Young, Leroy Smith, and Junior Crouch. ■6 --.WUi. Coaches: Miss Nancy Huff, Mrs. Anna Cutlip. Miss Gail McSweeney. That should be a good one, Barbara! Captains: Catherine Vanover and Barbara Petersen. Managers: Cheryl Downs, Bonnie Lang. Completing a successful season, the varsity hockey team learned, not only the importance of good sportsmanship and fair play, but also that teamwork and hard practice combine to form a winning season and a team with fine morale. In the last game the girls wore their new blue tunics which arrived at the school two days before the season ended. Through strenuous practice and understanding guidance of the coach, the goal will become a reality. Although defeated at times, they are gaining experience and team cooperation. The 8th grade basketball team is working hard to improve upon last year's record. They are proud to be on a school team and are anxiously awaiting the year they will be qualified for the varsity squad. Smith, Saylor, and Shillingbury are reaching high. QUEEN BEES As the girls' equivalent of our Yellow Jackets, the entire school is very proud of the Queen Bees. After a not-too-good season last year, the girls rallied forth with victory after victory against their well-known competitors. Shocking the students, the team chalked up win after win to make their fellow students swell up with pride. The girls have helped to keep the school's morale high after football season. We students are very proud of our girls' team and we thank their coaches, Miss Mc-Sweeney and Mrs. Cutlip, for the wonderful job they've done. Preparing for the Varsity, the Junior Varsity drill with the hope of someday making THE team. The J.V. team has come a long way this year and, with the right breaks, will go far in Varsity. The games that were lost can be chalked up to inexperience and mistakes. Much credit should be given to Coach Stout, for through his guidance, baseball remains a strong sport at Osbourn. ----Coach Stout. With the returning of numerous lettermen, Osbourn is assured of a superior team and many close, competitive games.
