; 11 THE HI-JACKET Presented to the Students of OSBOURN HIGH SCHOOL Manassas, Virginia FOREWORD The pathfinders of science have paved the way for the universal advances in space travel. The observations of Galileo through his telescope and the theories of Copernicus are part of the heritage from which emerged the first American astronaut's triumph in outer space. We have chosen space” as the theme for the yearbook because it so closely illustrates twentieth century progress. The Hi-Jacket staff is proud to present the 1961-62 annual to the school. 2 3 DEDICATION The welfare of children has always come first in this person's life and always will. Because of this concern, he has complete understanding of students with whom he has worked. As the astronaut learns the instrument panel of his satellite, so does this person work doubly as hard to understand his students and fellow faculty members. The comprehensive effort that this individual has placed upon all areas of school life can be compared to that of America’s first astronaut. In both areas each has made his lasting contribution which has opened the door to further advancement in many areas. His idea in the athletic field of Osbourn has become a reality as the dream of space travel. He has set marvelous examples of good sportsmanship and citizenship both on and off of the athletic field. This person is one of Osbourn's valuable assets. Every boy in school who has ever participated in any athletic event knows him as a coach and friend as well as a classroom teacher. We are sincerely grateful to Mr. Wildman for his immense contributions that he has made to our lives. We dedicate this 1962 Hi-Jackct to Mr. Charles Wildman. PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Another year has passed rapidly and you are enjoying your senior year at Osbourn. I know that many of you are anticipating with joy the approach of graduation day. You will each go your separate, chosen way. However, you will each have a common purpose in life, no matter what your choice of livelihood will be. These common purposes will be to follow your own religion, to become a citizen who responds to your community needs, and to be a very significant force in your own family. It is my desire that you not consider your graduation date the end of your formal education. Our world today requires that all of us must continue to expand our formal learning in order to keep abreast of changing times. The mental discipline which you have received in the classroom is just a beginning; it is a mold which needs constant perfecting. Make good use of every moment and develop a feeling of pride in all your undertakings. Use your time as you use your money, invest it wisely and expect rewarding dividends. The faculty at Osbourn is standing behind you and will continue to aid you in any manner we car when you call upon us. Each of you has been loyal to the school, and this loyalty will always be returned to you. CHARLES ADAMS a late member of the class of 1962 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God believe also in me. In my jather’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. And whither I go ye know and the way ye know. Peace I leave with you; my peace give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. St. John 1-4. 27 Osbourn High School is indeed fortunate to be affiliated with an administration as excellent as that one of Prince William County. The students have been privileged with adequate facilities and a pleasing school atmosphere through the excellent job done by Superintendent of Schools and all other people in his office and the office staff at Osbourn High School. SENIORS With five years of training behind them, the senior class is prepared to venture into the world beyond. The seniors, having developed character traits of responsibility, leadership, and citizenship are confident of successfully fulfilling any task or overcoming any obstacle that they might meet in becoming tomorrow’s citizens and tomorrow's leaders. Through the years, they have sponsored many dances such as the memorable Sadie Hawkins Dance at which they received their rings, a Christmas Dance, and the Prom, Paradise of the Deep. The Irene Marik Concert, a beauty contest, and the senior play are other results of the efforts of this class. They won't soon forget their eventful journey through the universe of knowledge. MRS. The club requires that its candidates not only maintain a high scholastic average, but also excel in character, leadership, and service. During the year, two tapping ceremonies are held to bring in eligible new members. The club sponsors a dance, and a current movie is shown in the school auditorium at the end of the year. This is the second year that the Honor Society has sponsored an Algebra II award.
