But the dark shadows can never dim the numerous and eminent achievements of our revered Osbourn High School. Because of these acomplishments we now have a fuller and more meaningful educational program. As the year has advanced even the most celebrated affairs have gradually faded into silhouette form. For this reason we, the Hi-Jacket Staff, have chosen for our theme, silhouettes. TABLE OF CONTENTS Seniors . . Juniors . . I Sophomores . Freshmen Eighth Grade Organizations Sports Features . . IN MEMORIAM Mr. Jere Bunting, Sr. 1899-1957 DEDICATION In looking back over our Senior year, one of the outstanding personalities is our assistant principal. Always with the good of the school at heart, and always ready to help us with our problems. Coach has been a friend to all. It is, therefore, with pride and affection that we the Class of 1958 dedicate this annual to Mr. James J. Leo. HONOR During our Senior year we have enjoyed a variety of accomplishments and successful programs. Many of these, however, would not have been possible without the assistance of our sponsors. They have given much of their time and effort toward making our last year memorable. It is only just, therefore, to honor Mrs. Brumback and Mrs. Wildman. ADMINISTRATION MR. STUART M. BEVILLE Superintendent We at Osbourn High School are indebted to Mr. Beville and Mr. Murphy for making our school year move with simplified coordination. Mr. Beville is one of the most respected men on or off our campus as a result of his wise decisions and his noted willingness to help us during the years of our education here at Osbourn. MR. WILLIAM R. MURPHY Principal Working closely with Mr. Beville is our own Mr. Murphy who is revered by each of us. Because of his constant aid and guidance he will remain not as a silhouette but as a distinct figure in our memories. 6 ADMINISTRATION MU JAMES LEO Assistant Principal MR. We can still remember clearly confusion of changing classes-for this was something new to us, the awe with which we looked up to the seniors, and the excitement of being the first eighth grade to enter the new high school. We recall looking longingly at the caption given our class in the annual- Class of '58 - and wondering if we would ever make it. As freshmen we felt that we were really a part of Osbourn. We ventured out to join organizations, try out for athletic teams, and participate in school activities. Our classes this year Were more difficult, but much more interesting. At the lunch table, our conversation began to take on an intellectual tone porto, portas, portat or X equals three times a plus b. The sophomore year seemed to fly by as we were busy with so many extracurricular activities-football games, dances, and committees. We juniors suddenly realized that we were a big part of Osbourn. Members of our class were out there on the football field or the basketball court, on the stage, winning contests, marching in front of the band. The one thing which stands out during this year is the Prom, which everyone said was the biggest and best ever. Suddenly school was over and we were handed cards stating that we were classified as seniors. At the beginning of this year we snapped into action and got organized for our most important year with plans for the senior trip, dreams of graduation night, applications to colleges or jobs, everyone looking ahead to the future. 12 JOAN ALLISON KATHRYN JANE ALLISON ROBERT LAWRENCE BAILEY ROBERT T. The entire student body, the faculty, and the administration works with the two governing bodies, the Council and the Senate, to try to solve the problems of the school; and to work for new and better worth-while activities. Some of the activities of 1957 were: the beginning of a Big Brother-Big Sister guidance program for eighth graders, the installing of a public telephone, the beginning of an SCA scholarship, a student directory, and the revision of the Student Handbook. The staff was chosen by letters of application in order to obtain persons best suited for the respective positions. This year, for the first time, the HI-JACKET has conducted meetings on a regular schedule. Every Tuesday and Thursday, members of the staff reported to 106 to work on the book. We sincerely hope that the long hours of labor begun in the summer have made the 1958 HI-JACKET an annual to remember. . Hi in 7 ‘ tii '.'in luH'iiu A. Parks, A. Haydon, J. Riddick, M. YELLOW JACKET Assignments, writing, rewriting, typing, proofreading, measuring, placing and replacing on layout sheets, choosing type, and running to the printer's office with the copy that should have been turned in the day before—then at last, we had an issue of the Yellow Jacket for you. All this work and more went into each newspaper, yet nothing could surpass the satisfaction we had when we saw the actual proof that something had been accomplished, the finished copy. Along with a new staff, new ideas, and new columns came a new class-Journalism 1. THE YELLOW JACKET was published through the journalism class which replaced the extra-curricular club. The members of the class worked hard striving to bring the news to you in an interesting and educational manner. t- S I SEATED: P. Watts, J. Roseberry. STANDING: B. Greenburg, G. Collins, R. Two of the most outstanding vocational classes in our school are cosmetology and shop; the students in these classes are preparing for their future lives by learning worthwhile skills and techniques. The girls, under the direction of Mrs. Edwards, slowly but surely develop into capable beauticians. While the girls are styling hair, the boys are working diligently at learning the trades of carpentary and cabinet making under the supervision of Pop Bennett. After winning the first few games the Jackets went into a slump, losing five games straight. Towards the latter part of the season an atmosphere of determination prevailed. It was probably this and the grueling, tiresome, day-after-day practice, which sometimes lasted until after dark, that brought the squad through to win those last few contests. Although Osbourn has seen better seasons, there is not a member of the Yellow-Jacket team who is not proud to say that he played on the 1957-58 squad. FIRST ROW: V. O'Briant, S. Snellings, S. Football Squad, turned out in mass numbers forming the largest squad yet. They worked with enthusiasm as a team, not as individuals. They played aggressively, but they played clean, honest football. In asking any J. V. player what his roughest game was, the reply will probably be the Herndon game. Then again, you may ask the easiest, and from any player the answer will be that there were not any easy games and there never will be. The man behind this team, who worked as hard as any player, and coached the squad to a second season's record that was un-attainable to any other team on the J. V. schedule is, of course. Many lovely maidens and their gentlemen made up the nobility, lining each side of the Queen's throne. The entrance was entwined with ivy and the ceiling was a criscross of deep blue. The music afforded by a small band was fi t for royal ity and enjoyed by both the royality and peasants. HOMECOMING P. Harris S. Holmes N. Rhodes P. Harrover E. Fletcher J. Heinz J. Throneburg JUNIOR-SENIOR PROM The Junior-Senior Prom of 1957, was one of the highlights in the lives of the graduating class of 1958. The theme, Stairway to the Stars , was carried out quite effectively by using a double stairway leading into the starlit night. The orchestra, arranged in front of the stairway, was flanked on both sides by large palms. The entrance proved to be a novelty; the guests entered through large golden gates entwined with ivy. The blue crepe paper, sprinkled with stars, formed a canopy over the room. Because each Junior contributed hard work, the Prom proved to be one of Osbourn's most memorable. 83 LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT JOAN ALLISON--leaves until next September when she will join once again.
