Joreworcl To the ideals of Lee and Jackson, great builders of men, we turn our thoughts, as we of the new South enter upon the responsibilities of adult living. With great seriousness of purpose, we prepare to foster the unity which the national emergency requires of us. As with these fine leaders, we stand prepared to defend our homeland, the great American nation, and our belief in the dignity of man. 2 2 edicate ROBERT EDWARD LEE (1807-1870) His was true greatness. Having lost in a cause, the rightness of which we leave to historians to decide, he sought a new one—that of the education of youth for leadership and participation in a growing democracy. To his noble ideals we dedicate our 1951 Hi-Jacket. In his character may we find the strength so needed in the dark days ahead. 3 JJonor Mr. and Mrs. William Herman Lee We honor Mr. and Mrs. William Herman Lee, for whom we hold a special place in our hearts and interests—for who will not say that a faculty romance is not interesting! They met at Osbourn and were married— as we knew they would be—during the summer vacation. Other than what has been said, Mr. Lee is important to us as a lineal descendant—both on his mother's and his father's side—of Robert Edward Lee. n in id trci It ion It's natural to like him—for he likes us. Each of our problems is of interest to him, and there's always time in his busy schedule for them. She leaves us breathless We feel guilty, in our many idle moments, as we see her in the busy rush so characteristic of her manner. However, we know that she will stop, at any time, to help us with our momentous problems 5 Mr. Reams E. Bennett HOME MECHANICS, INDUSTRIAL ARTS Miss Carolyn Buie MUSIC Mr. Robert N. Let us look for a moment at the past—when we first entered high school. As freshmen, it seemed to us that we would never achieve our one goal—graduation from Osbourn. Our freshman year was full of gay laughter and little seriousness in our work; but when the time arrived for reports and exams, we quickly settled down and tried to do our best Before we knew it, we had completed our year's term and were out of classes for the summer. In the autumn of '48, we found ourselves returning to Osbourn as sophomores. This was the year, it seemed to us, that we were actually recognized as students participating in school life. We took an active part in sports, clubs, and various organizations Members of our class made the varsity teams and became members of the higher organizations in the school such as the Senate and the Student Council. We were astonished and maybe a little proud when we witnessed the graduation of some of our higher classmates and it seemed to make us appreciate them more when we knew that the school had just lost a fine group of boys and girls. June arrived and we were headed for another vacation. We usually made the best of our time away from school and were all eager to return again in September. We entered high school with an air of dignity because we would be Juniors and Seniors and would be able to participate in more of the activities that were offered for the Junior and Senior Classes. We helped to prepare the prom and most of us proudly attended it. Again another fine class left Osbourn and we were out for the summer. The following term we returned to high school as an entirely different group of individuals. We had lost most of our “childish ways, and had actually gotten down to setious work. We received our class rings, for which we had waited so long. We proudly wore them and will always cherish them as a symbol of our days at Osbourn. Now, that we have looked back upon our years in school, we will better appreciate the times we have had and will always look back with an air of dignity to be able to say that we graduated from Osbourn. We will always appreciate what the school has done for us, sending us out into the business and professional world well prepared and well educated. S. for the twelve o'clock program, we hear the familiar voice of our beloved top sergeant, Big Ed , crying At Ease in a fearful tone. Big Ed is sponsor of the Seniors who attend the Technical School in the morning. For the past year the Manassas Public School System has been, indeed, fortunate to have as a teacher in the Baldwin Elementary School, Miss Phyllis Naylor of Yorkshire, England. She came to us as an exchange teacher. Her work here has been, on all occasions, outstanding; and we feel sure that many children have been inspired as a result of her able teaching and guidance. We wish to her a safe voyage back to England and many happy years to come. Manassas returns her to its English cousins with re-qret. May they cherish her as we have done. Tuning our T. V. set to station 0. H. S. for the nine o'clock program, we hear a faint but commanding voice saying, Get into your seats, the bell has rung! The students who attend the Technical School in the afternoon know this well-known Senior sponsor as Mary B. 16 S iue 'tjjear .Seniors Walter Alpaugh John Champion Ann Warren Coleman Alvin Radford Compton Haynes Davis Warren Harrover Jeanette Hurst Catherine Kemper Gill Machen Quentin Franklin Lawler Douglas Miller 17 Gerald Sproles Dorothy Sutphin Marlene Albertson John Baker David Barbee Doris Beach Jacqueline Beach Jean Bell Eleanor Ann Bennett Richard Black Ronald Black Mary Jane Breeden Nancy Breeden Bobby Burchard Helen Carroll Eleanor Caton Elizabeth Cornwell Frances Crabill Mary Duddleson Martha Anne Eagle Esther Fox Joyce Fox Lou Galleher Betty Lee Garman Senia Gough Jeff Grady Jerry Gregory Lucille Gregory Bobby Hall Kenneth Hamm Vernon Hardesty Imelda Harris Betty Harrover Shirley Herndon Huburt Hicks Patsy Hooe Louis Jones Doris Kidwell Doris Ann Kline junior A 18 Sylvia Kline Donald Lawhead Max McClendon Wayne McKenzie Winona Merchant Gilbert Miller Carol O'Donovan Dante Papa Italo Papa Author Patton Bobby Payne Jack Pence Jack Phipps Charles Rector Betsy Ross Mary Esther Russell Doris Salter Martha Jean Saunders Bonnie Shields Patsy Simpson Mary Ann Sinclair Ann Smith Billy Spring Joyce Sullivan Dennis Todd Thelma Todd Mary Lou Trimmer Mary Jane Utterback Ursula Von Loesch Mary Walters June Werner Sally Williams Delores Wilson Earnest Wines Claudette Woodyard Shirley Young Louis Zackey junior A 19 Jhe ejCower C (c added The school is growing larger each year as a result of an increasing amount of students enrolling from Haymarket Town, Arlington City, Alexandria City, and Fairfax County. Our lower classmates are beginning to participate in more of the activities that are going on in the high school. This year we hove an exceptionally large ninth grade. The sophomore class is small as result of a very small ninth grade last year. The eighth grade is new to the high school this year and we all hope that they will become more familiar with the high school as they advance into the higher classes. We know that the lower classmen are looking forward to the time when they will take part in Rat Week and when they will participate in Senior Day. But most of all they are looking forward to their one goal—graduation. It has its own officers, as well as two governing bodies, the Senate and the Council. The Senate is composed of three Seniors, two Juniors, and one Sophomore; and the Council is composed of the officers of home rooms, clubs, committees, and publications. These bodies work together in governing the student body. William Latham, after a strongly contested election in the spring of 1950, became the president of the Student Cooperative Association. One of the outstanding achievements of the organization this year was to once again have the Homecoming Celebration. There was a large parade, the football game, and the dance that made this celebration a success. In conjunction with the Senior Class, this organization helped to make Senior Days and Rat Days , days of remembrance. Regular monthly meetings were held, and the Ministerial Association of Prince William County furnished the Student Cooperative Association with guest speakers for assemblies. This year has been a year of accomplishment for our student government. With the full cooDcration of the officers of the Student Cooperative Association, the faculty, and student members of the organization this fine record was achieved. 32 SEATED, left to right: Fleur Peters, Mary J. PATSY BARROn DL J4t jacLet The Hi-Jacket Staff is composed this year of four editors-in-chief. Jack Bryant, Barbara Swank, Marie Davis and Patsy Barron. Although confronted with scores of problems, they have enjoyed their work. Their labors have met with great success and once again the Hi-Jacket Staff presents an unique and outstanding annual. They have set a standard for future annuals that will be difficult to equal.” 40 47 ’5 49 Doris Beach The Osbourn High School Band, under the direction of Mr. Herman Lee, has taken part in many of the activities of the school. They led the Homecoming Parade and played at the football games. The band won many prizes for its outstanding work. On February 22, the Osbourn band held its annual concert in the school auditorium. Friends and relatives of the members were witnesses of this most enjoyable night of entertainment. This year the band and the students are proud to have four members of the band representing the school in the All State Band. The students chosen were Loyce Guy, Mary Ann Sinclair, Wallace Wright, and Tom Kelso. Osbourn High School has had the privilege this year of having in its student body, one of the one hundred and ninety-five German students attending schools throughout America. This was made possible by the Brethren Service Commission co-operating with the State Department. Families in this country have accepted them into their homes to live as a son or daughter. These students are attending schools in various states all over the United States. The purpose of this project is to bring more and better relationships between countries all over the world. Our honored student is Arnold Van Elst, who arrived in this country on July 10, 1950, and is one of the two students living in Virginia. He is living with Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Kline of Manassas and is making his home on their dairy farm. Arnold has shown increased interest in the American way of life and is doing excellent work in his school activities. Osbourn High School students have been truly honored by having this student among us. 52 Arnold Van Elst 53 _industrial WOODROW HICK£ ROY BEAN The boys in industrial arts come in contact with woodworking. mechanical drawing, some electricity and plastics. and metal work.
