ZOfOy ' The 1949 HI JACKET Published by the Students of Osbourn High School Manassas, .Virginia Jfy) dULCC- Alma Mater On Manassas Western border Clear against the sky Proudly stands our Alma Mater As the years go by. Forward ever be our watchword Conquer and prevail! Hail to thee, our Alma Mater, M. H. S! All Hail! Cherished by thy sons an d daughters Memories sweet shall throng Round our hearts, 0 Alma Mater, As we sing thy song. Foreword THE CLASS OF 1949, have almost reached our first goal. To help us always remember our days at Osbourn, if we will ever need a reminder, we have herein assembled all the people, places, and things which we associate with our Alma Mater. We have worked hard and long to make this book a success, and through the help and understanding of our teachers, have done our best. Thus it is, with mingled feelings of pride and humility, that we present The Hi-Jacket of 1949. ADMINISTRATION CLASSES ORGANIZATIONS ATHLETICS FEATURES ADVERTISEMENT Dedication N ORDER that we might express our deepest grati¬ tude and sincerest regards to the one who has so faithfully held out to us a guiding and encouraging hand throughout our high school days, we dedicate the 1949 Hi-Jacket to the most under¬ standing of leaders—Mr. Ian H. Ross. We Honor In compiling this yearbook, we the staff, would like to honor Miss Emily Johnson, who over many years has shown the most long-suffering patience and kind understanding for her strug¬ gling pupils. We also honor Miss Irene Taylor, who has done almost the impossible in creating a Glee Club out of the most untrained material, and giving us so much of her talent and love of music. A.B. MR. IAN H. We should only be looking ahead; yet. somehow, we find ourselves looking hack. Back to the time when we were lowl Freshmen. Freshmen—the lowest of the low; the greenest of the green; the newest of the new. How scared we wer e, especially during “Rat Week.” We soon found out, however, how friendly our teachers and upperclassmen were. The year passed quickly, and then we were Sophomores. No special event marked our Sophomore year, but we cannot leave it out, and still give a picture of our complete school life. We looked forward to the time when we could enjoy the Prom; then it was time for us to say good-bye to the Class of ’47. We were so proud to be Juniors. How hard we worked preparing for the Prom, but our work was well rewarded when everyone told us the gym looked lovelier than it ever had before. Time was slipping away; the year ended, and we were “dignfied” Seniors. Dignified? No, at least, we didn’t feel that way. Strange as it may seem, we felt humble. Was it really possible that we would soon be leaving? The fall slipped by, and Christmas vacation came. Then all of a sudden, it was 1949, THE YEAR. With our mid-term exams over, it seemed as if the winter flew by, and soon, almost too soon, it was Spring. The Prom, our last, was beautiful. It will always seem very special to us, for it was in our honor. A lovely memory to carry with us. The Baccalaureate Ceremony, with its simple, beautiful dignity, has passed. Commencement time is almost here. Yes, the time has come for us to leave. To you, the incoming class, we leave a hope that you will hold high and carry forward the ideals, which we, in our turn, have tried to uphold. With mingled feelings of happiness and sorrow we say “Farewell.” Our deepest wish is that some little thing which we have accomplished, will help you always remember the Class of ’49. 10 THOMAS ORVILLE BEANE Member of Grounds Committee ’44, ’48 Member of Monitor Committee ’47 Member of Radio-Dance Committee ’47, ’49 Treasurer of Home Room ’45, ’47, ’48 Secretary of Home Room ’46 Secretary of Athletic Association ’49 Football Team ’47, ’48, ’49 Track Squad ’47 Basketball Manager ’47 BARBARA LEE BELL Vice-President of Home Ec. Fleur Peters Treasurer .Emily Speakes Parliamentarian Benny Cross Student Cooperative Association There was close competition during the 1948 election of the officers of the S. C. A., which resulted in the election of Stewart Reid as president. The out¬ standing plank in his platform was to secure one or more scholarships which would be open t o students of this school when they graduated. During the year, Stewart has achieved his aim by securing a hundred-dollar scholarship to Randolph-Macon. The old hand-rung bell has been replaced by an automatic electric bell. The gym floor has been painted; several new clubs and committees have been added. There have also been some changes in the organization of the committees. An intramural sports program has been developed this year; the competi¬ tion between the classes has become so strong that every free Activities Period is eagerly awaited. In November, Betty Lou Breeden, Fleur Peters, Stewart Reid, and Jackie Saylors attended the State S. C. A. Convention at Richmond. They returned with very interesting reports. The County Federation meeting was held in April of last year, with Osbourn playing host to Brentsville and Occoquan High Schools. The annual meeting was held again this spring. In addition to the President and the other S. C. A. officers, there are two branches of our student government. The Senate, which is composed of three Seniors, two Juniors, and one Sophomore, is the most powerful of these. The Council, which is composed of the heads of the home rooms, clubs, and committees, works hand in hand with the Senate to carry the students’ wishes in accordance with the school laws. This year, due to a great controversy, Rat Week, which here¬ tofore has been an annual affair, was not held. Regardless of their many achievements and fine records, the S. C. A., Council, and Senate would be nothing without the cooperation of the student bodv. 26 Senate Seated- Left to Right: Benny Cross, Miss Smith, Helen Rititer, Stewart Reid. There are four officers who are elected by the student body. They will repre¬ sent the student body in all the meetings and discussions. The Athletic Association is in charge of all the money received from all the athletic events, they see that athletic equipment is purchased when it is needed. 4 Cheer-Leader This year’s cheerleaders have done a very good job and deserve praise. They have made up many new cheers which is something we really needed also. The cheerleader squad is chosen like the athletic squads as of this year. All students interested in cheering will go out for the squad, the cheering coach will send them in to cheer when she thinks they are capable of doing so. Up the steps and down: Billy Cue. Patsy Barron, Fleur Peters, Gem Parler, Marilyn Teien, Bobby Rust. Football Captain . Bill Thomasson Coach .Mr. Leo Fielding a comparatively green and inexperienced football team, much credit has to he given to the coaching staff consisting of James J. Leo and Joe Fortuna, both did a marvelous job of turning out a squad which though not a winner most certainly ranked as a fighting team. Osbourn’s bad season can be credited to the facts that the “Yellow Jackets” were hindered by weight and size, al so because they played opponents out of their class. With extensive coaching and experience, the 1949-50 squad should be one of the best ever turned out of Osbourn High School. For the second consecutive year the Lion’s Trophy given to the outstanding linesman was awarded to Bill Thomasson, captain of this year’s eleven. Hall of THOMAS ORVILLE BEANE We will remember “Tommy” for his excellent performance on the football gridiron. In every school, there are certain students who typify the student body. Not too studious, yet not “dimwits’”; interested in sports, but not “musclebound”; neither always laughing, nor always serious. In view of their characteristics, the Senior Class of Osbourn has voted MARILYN JEAN TEINE and ROBERT EDWARD ROOF as the most typical Osbourn students. From the day it was established in 1944, it has come a long way and hundreds of students have passed through its portals. It was designed to meet the needs of training beyond the high school level for youths who have no intentions of receiving professional training in colleges. The school is administrated by the Prince William County School Board of Education. The Virginia State Board of Education is responsible for the over-all supervision of the school. The staff of the school is composed of men and women carefully selected for special ability in specific fields of Vocational work. Students from the school divisions of Fairfax, Loudon, Warren, Rappahan¬ nock, Culpeper, King George, Prince William, Stafford, Fauquier, and Alexandria city are attending the school at present. Academic work is offered through Osbourn High School, from which credits earned may be transferred to a student’s local high school and applied toward graduation. The courses offered by the school at present are: Automobile Mechanics, Carpentry, Woodworking, Cosmetology, Dr afting, Electricity, Machine Shop, Office Practice, Shorthand, Typewriting, Practical Nursing, Radio, Welding, and Sheet Metal.
