MISS FAULCONER, MISS NELSON The enior Class Remember how we felt back four or live years ago when We were just starting out on that long, long trail of years with Class of '48 shining like a torch at the end? Here we are at the top, and do we feel any dif- ferent? Well, maybe we do. We remember how we felt when we were little insignificant Freshmen, being initiated into the wonders of high school. Unhappily for us, Rat Week was installed, when we were lowly Freshies. So, we could not escape that horror. For a while we scuttled through the halls, not daring to call our souls our own. Then we began to take notice. This was a grand set of teachers we hadg we began to find new friends among new classmates and the upper classmeng over us on the wall in the auditorium was Miss Eugenia's portrait looking down on us, and back of it all, dear old Osbourn High watching over us. That year came to an endg and then we were Sophomores, one step nearer our goal. When Sep- tember came 'round, we were back again, but not green Freshmen any more. We were the Sophomore Class-that in-between stage, neither most lowly nor most high. We saw our classmates chosen for Hal- loween Court, and we saw the months go by and the gym decorated for the Prom for which we weren't eligible yet. We saw another Senior Class leave, and here we were, Juniors! That year flew by toog it seemed Time knew we hadn't much longer to stay here, and was making it even less. That was the year of the Prom we really worked on, complete with memory books and all the Hxin's. Then the Prom was only a memory, and a few scraps of faded crepe paper and the ribbon from the girls' corsages. Then it was time to say goodbye to our friends in the graduating class, and embark on our last summer vacation from Osbourn. In the Fall of '47, we chose Oliver Dashiell for our President, Betty Coverston as Vice-President, Joyce Keys as our Class Secretary, and Bobby Cornell as Treasurer, to guide our steps along the last stretch of the trail. The end of ,47 went as smooth as silk, and we stepped into '48 with the knowledge that this was Our Year-our year to receive the final honors from Osbourn High, and our year to relinquish the trail-blazing to the on-coming Senior Class. It was our year, too, we realized, to discover in our hearts that which we, as Freshmen, couldn't have believed possible-that little sharp pain at leaving our Alma Mater to the underclassmen, however able to carry on they might be. The year of the Prom that was what no other Prom yet had been, the year of looking on from above, and toward the end, already feeling a little left out, when we heard the underclassmen talk- ing of next year. Well, next year think of us. And think of us on Graduation Night as the strains of the Recessional take us farther and farther from Osbourn High. And in years to come remember the Class of '48. We'll be remembering you and everyone and every- thing that make up Osbourn. We won't need mem- ory books or diaries to remember it all. After all, how could we forget? 1.1 Y W: g 'w-. sN,A -Q-gy' X!! li Club ELVIN BURL BREEDEN Burl '41-'42, Football, Safety Patrol, '42-'43, Basketball, '43-'47, Football ,vs 'YYIITXWQ ALICE JUNE BRYANT june '45-'46, Home Ec. His platform contained promises to obtain a monogram for the stage curtains, to start a fund for curtains for the windows in the auditorium, to secure cooperation between students and faculty, to support the Yellow jacket and Hi- Iacket, to have on sale school pennants and monograms, and to consider all worthy suggestions for the betterment of the school. During this school year many new improvements have been made at Osbourn. The lights have been put on the athletic field, bleachers have been built in the gymg the Honor Society Store has received Osbourn pennants and monogramsg a clock that works has been put in the auditoriumg the Radio Dances have been improvedg the gymnasium floor has been painted, new clubs have been establishedg and cheer- leaders have been added to the original squad. All in all, it is a fine record of achievement. On October 24, 1947, a meeting of the Virginia State S. C. A. was held at Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg. The Osbourn delegates, Bobby Lymburner, Barbara Lymburner, Teddy Peters, and Rembert Parler returned with interesting reports on the discussions. Rembert led one discussion group. Another S. C. A. meeting, though on a much larger scale, was the annual convention of the Southern Association of Student Government, which was held in Corpus Christi, Texas, in November. Mariam Gregory, Bobby Lymburner, Bobby Roof and Miss Smith attended the convention and brought home many new ideas on student government. A County Federation Senate meeting was held at Brentsville District High School on November 4th and a meeting was arranged for April 1948, to be held at Osbourn High School. In addition to the President and officers of the S. C. A. there are two departments, the Senate and the Council. The Senate is composed of three Seniors, two juniors, and one Sophomore, all elected by the council. The Senate has joint power with the Council to organize regulations and activities for the school. The Council is made up of the chairmen of all organizations and the home room presidents. It was especially active this year. After two days of stormy session, the resolution was passed by the Council to add new cheerleaders to the squad. This was probably the most controversial point decided by the Council this year. Aside from the many branches of the student government, perhaps should be mentioned the most im- portant factor of all-the student's cooperation with the S. C. A. Hours and hours we spent studying annuals, making picture schedules, planning page sequences, soliciting ads, arranging pictures, checking on names, writing copy, and all of the many tasks connected with editing the school yearbook. The staff is appreciative of the help we received from everyone. To the patrons who purchased ads, to all who bought copies of the annual, to the people who loaned us cars for our numerous errands, to Mr. Ross for his cooperation with the staff during those trying days in January when we were getting ready to go to press, to Mr. Newlan for his patience in making group pictures, to Viola Ritenour who typed all of our copy and Vera Merchant who typed the ads-- to all of you we can only say, Thanks! We hope you like the 1948 Hi-Inckelf' The Hi-Iafkef during its short life of four years has become an integral part of Os- bourn High School and the staff of the 1948 edition is proud to present this as our con- tribution to become a part of the heritage of our high school. Since then, more beginners were taken into the band to increase the number to seventy. The band will serve both school and community. This organi- zation will, in due time, be one of the most important units in the community for it will represent the school and community in many out of town engagements. The band is directed by Mr. Michael Ronca, who has very skillfully and capably undertaken the organization of this entirely new group. To enhance the band at football games and parades sixteen majorettes will be incor- porated to give the organization the necessary oomph. The class for majorettes was organized in January with Barbara Hendryx of Fairfax High School as instructor. Keep posted on this organization. The Hi-Iafkrf predicts that they will have great things in store for us. 39 MELLOPHONE SECTION G. Wayland, S. Barron, D. Kline, M. Run- ca fleaclery, S. Smith, F. Nelson. This was the crown- ing achievement of the season and as a result the home games were enjoyed by capacity crowds from all over Prince William County. This season's schedule was the hardest ever encountered by any team that has ever played for Osbourn High. The Yellow Iuflzets met such teams as Front Royal. James Monroe, Culpeper, Mount Vernon, and Charles Town. Co-Captains Harris and Sinc'air led their team through some spectacular games, and you may see the results as follows: On February 11, 1948 the Lion's Club of Ma- nassas gave a banquet in honor of the squad. A trophy was presented to Bill Thomasson for being the outstanding linesman of the year. Several players from the Washington Redskins team were present. Estab- lished in 1944 by the State Board of Education, it is designed primarily to meet the needs of training beyond the high school level for the youth who prefers technical training to professional college training, but at present the school also supplements the offering of high schools by making its services available to any student in high school in Virginia. Academic classes are offered through Osbourn High School. LEO e Dedicate To ONE who has guided us in many ways on the field and in the classroom, to one who has led us on to newer, greater heights of endeavor and achievement, is this Hi-Iacket of 1948 dedicated. In the fall of 1945 Mr. Leo came to Osbourn immediately after re- ceiving his discharge from the armed forces. It did not take us long to learn to appreciate his sense of fair play, his genuine respect for good sportsmanship, and his loyal services to the students and to the school. With 1946 he lead our teams to more victories than ever before. With 1947 he was directly responsible for securing lights for Swaverly Field and his efforts have made it possible for more people to enjoy the athletic activities he so ably directs. Therefore, it is with gratitude and a sense of prevailing friendship that we dedicate this book to Coach James J. Leo.
