WILLIA M SNYDER The members of the Senior Class of Orwigsburg High School dedicate the Hi-Crier of 1955 to our honored and esteemed teacher, principal, and counselor, Mr. William Snyder. His genuine desire to improve the activities and scholastic standards of the school, through encour- aging and building good students, has been increasingly evident, By splendid example, by em- phasis upon worthwhile achievements, he has influenced immeasurably the lives of all who have come under this tutelage, Born in Ashland, he was graduated from Butler Township Schools in 1942, after which he spent three semesters at West Chester, earning credits in Health and Physical Education: three, at Ursinus, in science: five semesters at West Chester, in science, after which he received his B. S. in education from that school. He attended Bucknell University where he spent two semes- ters in the post-graduate school, earning his M. S, degree in education. He served three years in the United States Navy where he earned his commission and also studied physics, advanced mathematics, and Navigation. He served in the Pacific Theatre and was an executive officer of his ship, A. T. F. For some time he worked with the Pennsylvania Anti-Tuberculosis Society, followed by several years of teaching in the Lehman and Pine Grove Schools. Administration V' Mlm. 1-i 7 ,5 'Luv 5 M- mag Wm' if - W I I L ,L AL- X3- ss 'PQ l Blue Mountain Joint School System The opening of school for the 1954-55 term found Orwigsburg Borough participating in a joint school system. This jointure was effected the previousjuly after many months of discus- sion and planning, Being a member of a jointure already has resulted in many improvements in our schoolsg it has also presented some new problems. It is hoped, however, that through experience and co-operation on the part of all concerned, a better school system will emerge for the boys and girls of Orwigsburg. The first meeting concerning jointure was held at Cressona on Wednesday, December 16, 1953. Representatives from New Ringgold, East Brunswick Twp. , North Manheim Twp. , Wayne Twp. , Cressona and Orwigsburg were present and heard Mr. Arthur Henninger, County Super- intendent of Schools, discuss the reasons for forming a jointure and the advantages of operating larger units of administration, At the conclusion of the meeting Mr. Henninger asked each of the school boards present to approve his plan for jointure, to give him permission to have his staff make a detailed study of the area, and to adopt a resolution that each district take a com- plete population census as soon as possible in 1954. Very little action was taken by any of these boards for the next few fnonths, Finally, early in May, jointure discussions were re-opened at which time representatives from the six districts involved attended a meeting in Mr. Henninger's office in Pottsville. At the meeting some basic changes were outlined that seemed agreeable to all of the districts, and it was decided that a series of meetings should be held so that a complete exchange of information could be obtained. Following this series of meetings and after all of the boards had indicated a willing- ness to enter the jointure, an organization meeting was held on Thursday, July 8, 1954. At this meeting officers were elected for the joint school system and the articles of agreement were signed, thus bringing into existence the Blue Mountain Joint School System. It is the hope of the Orwigsburg Board of Education that by participating in the joint system more educational service will be made available to the boys and girls of Orwigsburg at a cheaper cost to the tax payers than would have otherwise been possible. NUTE OF APPRECIATIUN It is with sincere and grateful thanks that we, the class of 1955, reserve this page as a token of our appreciation to Miss Meta Mattern, our yearbook advisor, During the months we labored over our book in order that it would be a success, she constantly oversaw and helped us in our work, made things easier for us if possible, gave us kind- ly advice and saw to it that our assigned work wasin by the deadline. Without her efforts concern, drive, and all-around interest, it would doubtlessly not have been possible for us to have a yearbook of the high quality, N!! PRI CIPAL, MESSAGE Cervantes, the noted Spanish author, haswritten, We stumble oftenest when we look down, not up, In this age of the cold war, the H-bomb, and all sorts ofnational and international tensions some of the youth of our nation, too quickly, look to the future with an air of despair and hopelessness, It becomes very easy to drop their heads and 'look down, ' Some of them also have the erroneous idea that there is nothing new to be accomplished, They believe that with the great scientific and technological advances that have been made in recent years all of the frontiers have been developed. They sympathize with the men inthe U, S. Government Patent Office, who, more than a century ago, felt the office should be closed since nothing remains to be invented, This type of thinking is ridiculous. Also, idle worry about work conditions will never effecta solution to our problems. As intelligent citizens we should certainly be con- cerned about world affairs but we must do more than just worry about them. ln times of crisis and of great need past generations of Americans have always arisen to the challenge andwith a stoutness of heart, an unwavering faith in God , and a resoluteness of purpose, haveovercome these crises. As far as opportunities for accomplishment are concerned, it should beremembered that whenever any new device is invented or any new process is developed many newoccupa- tions are also created, More opportunities for advancement exist today than at anytime in the history of mankind, You, the graduates of Orwigsburg High School, have little reason to be pessimistic, Look up so as not to stumble and accept the challenge of the times in accordance with the tradition of our great nation, While in school you have had placed in your hands thenecessarytoolsto solve many of the problems that will confront your generation, Use these tools wisely and suc- cess will be inevitable, May I extend my heartiest congratulations to you upon successfully completing thismile- stone of your lives and wish you the very best of everything in the future, SUPERVISOR? MESSAGE MR. KUNSMAN By the time you receive this yearbook in its printed form the formal school days for the class of 1955 of the Orwigsburg High School will be very few in number. At the end of these days comes graduation and your entrance into a new world of responsibilities, obligations and 0PP01'tUUitiCS. Youhave prepared for these by the time you have spent and the efforts you have put forth in completing the work necessary for graduation from the high school of your community, You, as a member of the graduating class, should realize that your community, teachers and schoolhave given of their time, talents, efforts and finances in order that you could reach this goal in your life--graduation. Because of the investments they have made in you and the goalyou have reached through them, you will be more capable of meeting the responsibilities required of a citizen of our nation and of fulfilling that great trust placed in all of us--to up- hold the ideals in which you have been trained and upon which our great nation has been found- ed. As you go forward in the days after graduation, meeting the trials, the complexities and the joys of everyday living, it is my earnest desire that you will find that the community, school and its teachers have served you well. Much of their reward and satisfaction comes from the fact that your life has been made easier, better and fuller because you have graduated from Orwigsburg High School, To each member ofthe Class of 1955 I extend my heartiest congratulations and best wishes for the days that lie ahead. It has been a privilege for me to become closely associated with you during your senior year through the organization of the Blue Mountain Joint School System. The first scene is a huge school known as the Blue Mountain Joint School System of which James Reichert is the Supervising Principal, We see one of the several secretaries in the spacious office and recognize her as Faye Reed. Farther down the corridor is a room headed Nurses' Room. Looking in, the former Darlene Stoudt is seen examing several students. In an adjacent building the former Barbara Dreher is seen teaching the third grade students. We have just had a report that a student has been seriously injured in gym class and has been rushed to the Pottsville Hospital where Joanna Goodman is head nurse of the Children's Ward. The scene has changed where Allen Bachman, who has just been promoted to Admiral in the U. S. Navy, is sailing out to sea, Among his crew is Robert Davies, a mechanical engineer, The crystal is hazy again, But, what's this we see? A large building with the heading, R, R, Repp's Garage. As we look inside we see Mr. Repp sitting at his desk dictating a letter to his secretary, Patricia Emerich, We also see Carl Rarick, decorator, and his employees, attractively painting the building. Another scene has just been revealed. Oh! look who it is! Robert Alspach stepping out of his Cadillac and entering his office, the manager's office, of the General Electric Corporation. Once again the scene has changed, this time a Democratic Politician has come into sight. It's our own Theodore Schneider making a speech for the coming election. fMay- be he can lower the income tax, if no one else can.j The scenes in the crystal ball have all faded away and the crystal has once again become clear. We all are happy and proud to see how all the members of the class of '55 have succeeded in life, ,T .1 ..i.i. The twenty-one members and three of the officers are chosen by direct vote of the student body. Only the treasurer is chosen by the Council. Decisions regarding matters within the school are made by a majority vote of the members of the Council. The organization has influenced the general conduct of the school, in- creased the friendship between the teachers and the pupils, and has made definite contributions to the scholastic advancement of the school. The students are proud of the various accomplishments of the Council. Early in the school year a hay ride was sponsoredg as its other fund raising pro- ject, the Council held a skating party. Four special assembly programs are provided for the students entertainment each yearg at commencement exercises, the Council presents an award to the Senior boy and the Senior girl for their participation in the activities of O.H.S. The responsibilities the Council assumes, and the cooperation the Coun- cil receives from the students, give evidence that the Student Council will remain a permanent organization in Orwigsburg High School.
