Erh. Mrs. lflrb teaches second grade in our elenientary building and plans to retire at the end of this school terni. She was horn on Septeniber 11, l8S4, graduated from Orwigshurg lligh School, in 1900, and from 'West Chester State Norinal School in HJO2. She has taught a total of 26 years, 2233 years of which were spent in Orwigsburg. She has three children, each of whoni was engaged in the teaching' profession for some tinie. Mfrs. Erb has served Orwigsburg school well. She has been one of its outstanding teachers for inany years. Her kind, but lirin ways with children will linger in our ineinories for inany years to eoine. Although their comfortable homes were almost devoid of color and although their religion forbade the use of color on their persons. they attempted to put a note into their otherwise dull surround- ings by using all sorts ol' 4lQVlCOS-ll0C'01'Eltlllg' in gaudy reds, greens. and yellow all the articles which were useda everyday i11 the home. People are awakening to the fact that i11 spite of its simplicity, or perhaps folk-art is truly a great heritage and one, well deserving of all the praise and recognition we can give it. As a practical art, 0110 with which the people lived day by day, it meant mneh to its ere- ators and, holds something for us if we will only look for it. Living a life could be considered similar to build- ing a house, When building a house, the owner is usually desirous of having the best material available. Good material put into a house enables it to withstand the storms of time. Any house must be built upon a solid foundation. ln living your life, you will Want to put the best of everything into it. During your twelve years, your teachers have tried to give you material to make up the foundation of your life. The rest of the construction remains in your hands. Penrod, a mischievous young scoundel, wants to be a great detective but his plans are foiled when he is given the main part in a church pa- geant. He manages to bring about the downfall of the pageant and goes on to start his own detec- tive agency with his life-long pal Sam and his friends Herman and Verman as assistants. Penrod overhears his mother and father dis- cussing Mr. Dade, a stranger, who comes calling on his sister. Miss Janet Price is the teacher in charge. Ten typewriters were acquired for the course as a beginning. It is planned to get more equipment for this department each year. This Commercial Course is a three year course, beginning in the tenth grade. Typing was offered to the Seniorsg General Business, to the Juniorsg and a combination of both, to the Sophomores. To provide for this Course, Latin and General Mathematics were dropped from the curriculum, Through the efforts of Mr. Fisher and Miss Price, field trips were taken by the Senior Academic Typing Class to several business offices in Orwigsburg, in order to learn of job opportunities and modern office procedures. Vaslav, chief of the Gypsies, goes to the King's court to get the ransom, He finds himself admiring the King, and offers the help of the Gypsy forces against the common enemy, the Tartars. The Tartars are beaten, Events show that Vaslav is the son of King Michael, long ago captured by the Gypsies. Since he is of royal blood, Tatania, who has fallen in love with him may marry him. The opcretta was rather well attended and was enjoyed by cvicryone present. The money for this building was given generously by people from Orwigsburg and vicinity to show their appreciation to those who fought and died for their country. We of the community can be grateful for what we have accomplished in building this Community Memorial. To the students of our schools it has been a place in which to have the recreation that a growing child needs. It also supplies the school students with a place in which to hold many of their school activities such as school dances, high school basketball games, volleyball games, pep rallies, gym class, the Junior Prom, puppet shows, musical programs, and many other similar activities. We, the students of the Orwigsburg schools, wish to express our deepest appreciation for this, The Com- munity Memorial Building. To the adults of Orwigsburg and the vicinity it has also been a place of recreation, in that every two weeks a professional wrestling bout is staged, semi-professional' basketball games can be seen, an annual banquet is held here, music festivals are put on, and approximately once a year an outstanding musical entertainer is here to put on a show. We, the people of the community, can be proud of what has been done through this Memorial Building.
