XVe, the staff of 1958-59. dedicate this, the fourth, edition of MemORRies to one who has given so willingly of her time and effort to help us become better citizens for the world of tomorrow. Through her capable hands the ancient romance of the Latin language has been brought into the modern classroom of O. H. S. Besides teaching Latin she has taught English I and is sponsor of the Latin Club. Through her unselfishness and love for the students, many useful and wel- come gifts have been given to our school. It is with pride and gratitude that we dedicate this annual to Margaret Hamilton. One of Miss Hamilton's many jobs is to administer first aid to the students of O. H. Mr. Norris received his B.S. from Ash- land College and his Master of Education degree from Kent State University. Mr. and Mrs. Norris and daughter, Nancy, reside at 1621 West Market Street. The main purpose was to promote interest and learn more about the ever-needed profession of teaching. Under the guidance of hard-working sponsor and officers and the cooperation of everyone, the club thrived and grew. A very appropriate candlelight serv- ice was held for the initiation of new members. Sponsored by the F. T. A., P. K. Howells, one-time principal of Orrville High School, spoke in an assembly. His interesting and sometimes witty speech kept the attention of everyone. In November, the seniors and jun- iors took over the job of teaching in the kindergarten, grade schools, and junior High School. The F. T. A. also helped watch the cafeteria line and did substitute teaching when necessary. The sophomores were in charge of the coat check at the basket- ball games. Qleft to right? R. Snyder, S. Enjoying the Banquet. PROM The night of May 2, 1958, will never be forgotten by the Class of 1959. The theme of the prom was Lure of the Tropics. As the guests entered, by walking down a gangplank, they re- ceived the impression that they had just landed on a tropical island. Three walls were covered with very realistic scenery of a tropical island. The fourth wall gave the appearance of an ocean. The band sat in the bow of a boat that was supposedly pulled up on the beach. On the opposite side of the island was a huge grass roof that sheltered the dancers as they sat at their tables. Refreshments were served out of a grass hut covered with straw and many tropical flowers. At each basket, giant, weird masks reached up from the backboards for about twenty feet. All around the gym were life-size palm trees and exotic flowers. In the center was a pond with three life-size pink flamingos in it. The whole gym gave the effect of a beautiful tropical island. The night of the Prom was a climax to many months of hard work. All the work, planning, mistakes. chicken wire. GEORGIA JONES Head Majorette MAJORETTES How does this routine go with that song? These are very familiar words to every majorette of the Orrville High School Marching Band. With the beginning of practice in August, the majorettes started making up routines for the 1958 football season After one month of practice, the long-awaited season finally began. At the preview game, you could not have found a more excited or nervous group of girls, but with luck and a lot of practice they got through it with fly- ing colors, as they did the rest of the football season. This year's majorettes were as fol- lows: Georgia Jones, head majoretteg Kathy Handwerk, alternate to headg Diane Huston, Mary Forrer, Lee Robin- son, Jerry Swerline, and Linda Kurtz. Alternate majorettes were Arlette Pouley and Barb Barkey. GERMA. BA.D The German Band is a unique or- ganization made up of seven accom- plished musicians who enjoy playing German music. Besides these appearances, they entertain- ed the students at many school functions. BOY ' CHORUS The Boys' Chorus this year, small in num- ber but large in spirit, put on splendid per- formances for their parts in the Christmas pro- gram and Spring Festival. Another important highlight took place when the boys sang at the Junior Class Play. All in all, the boys had a successful year. GIRLS' CHORUS The Girls' Chorus really had a busy year. Contests not only for the chorus itself, but for solos and ensembles, took up lots of their valu- able time. TEE - TONES If you heard strains of soft dance music coming from the bandroom any time last year, you were probably listen- ing to the Teen-Tones. This year the dance band played in the third talent assembly. They also went to Apple Creek State Hospital and played for a dance. ORCHESTRA Although the orchestra was again small this year, it was a very active or- ganization. During this school year, these seven musicians, under the leader- ship of Mr. Richard Snyder, provided music for many assemblies and took part in the Spring Festival. Mr. Snyder, with the aid of Mr. Kirkpatrick, junior High Band leader, tried to interest more students in join- ing the orchestra by giving lessons on violin, base viol, and any other instru- ment of interest. They were the ones who spent hour upon hour studying game movies and other ma- terial, looking for small things which might mean a ball game. Then they had to apply what they found. For Mr. Shunkwiler, this past sea- son was the one. His boys, the players who started as freshmen along with rookie mentor Shunkwiler four years ago, did not disappoint the man whom many of them respect more than any other person. A dedicated and deserving young man receives his due award and thanks. Chief's two assistants over the past few years have been two men whose love and devotion to football is no less. Mr. Eberly and Mr. Lorson both were of im- measurable value and were well liked by all who came into Contact with them -other coaches, players, and supporters. Mr. Davault was a newcomer to the staff this year and fit in very nicely with the high-character mold of his cohorts. MANAGERS As usual, the coaching staff this year surrounded itself with very able student aiad, furnished by the ambitious and highly-valued managers. Captain of managers in both foot- ball and basketball, jerry Stringfellow acted and worked as Mr. Shunkwiler's very close assistant for over seven con- secutive months. The function perform- ed by this young man typified the tre- mendously important job fulfilled by a manager, a job which cannot simply be measured in work accomplished. Sophomore Dick Bigler served as varsity football manager and reserve bas- ketball manager, while Tim Sage joined him in basketball. Ken Diller was the varsity cage manager. A pair of fresh- men, Bruce McFadden and jim Frost, were in both football and basketball, while john Zinkand was a varsity foot- ball assistant. 4? 4 X X 5. The Red Riders of the gridiron, under the very capable leadership of Bill Shunkwiler in his fourth year as head mentor of the football team, ran up a very successful season of 7-1-l. The squad, with a nucleus of fourteen return- ing lettermen, gave the fans many exciting moments and last half comeback thrills. A strong defensive unit registered five shutouts and al- lowed two other opponents one touchdown each. The Riders got by their first seven oppon- ents with relatively few scares. Then they came up against tough Mansfield Madison. Though they never gave up, they were simply outmanned and outweighed by their larger opponents. The final game saw the Riders and Wooster end in a scoreless tie. Though both teams pene- trated deep into enemy territory, neither could cross the goal line. BOY 9 66 99 66 99 Thirty boys made up the honorary athletic club of OHS Boys' O this year. Eighteen sen- iors, five juniors, and seven sophomores have earned their vaarsity monograms, a requirement which must be fulfilled in order to be a member of the organization. The all-senior officers were headed by Tom Cukr, who acted very capably as president. Tim Burkholder filled the position of vice-president, while Ben Seckel assumed the responsibilities of secretary - treasurer. Mr. Shunkwiler was the sponsor. Club jackets were purchased by several of the members, and the club sponsored a dance in january. The Girls' O is an honorary organization to which only those girls who have earned over 1000 points in athletic activities are admitted. These points are earned in intramural and inde- pendent athletic competition outside of school. Upon receiving 1000 points, a girl will receive her red O, becoming a member of the Girls' From here she may work still farther in sports in order to get her white O with 1500, a charm bracelet with 2500 points, and the high- est award. being a charm, for 3000. This organi- zation is sponsored this year for the first time by Miss Davis. The girls become members in this organiza- tion by working hard and excelling in sports. They are well deserving of their honors. Left to right-Martha Reusser. Georgia jones. Pat Arnold. Susi Smucker. Giene Stcxens. joan Shultzman. Nancy Falk, jean Hofstetter. Myra Prechtel. After 100 points were received, the girls each got her numeral. Most of the girls have exceeded this mark and have gone on to earn their red and white O's. Falk ARMY - NAVY Army-Navy is the girls' basketball game that is played each spring between two teams made up of the best girl bas- ketball players. For a month before the game, the two teams practiced long and hard to develop their skills and footwork. On the night of April 3, all the prac- ticing paid off in an exciting game in which both teams showed great skill and stamina. Miss Davis had the difficult job of coaching both teams, but she handled it very well. Traveling Team The traveling teams were very suc- cessful in both volleyball and basketball this year. Their first outing was to go to Dover, where both the varsity and the reserve volleyball teams easily beat the Dover teams. In February, they went to Clyde, where both teams again came home vic- torious, this time in basketball as well as volleyball. On March 14, the girls had a play- dav in Orrville, to which thev invited three other schools. f' A speech from our co cczptoln I Hi-Y practice Dedlccmng the new field 'ET 1'141w92r, l I Seven lovely losses Flowers ond o crown for The queen ff.
