jzfigufe The Blue Torrent football squad reported for practice on the morning of September l. Coach Winton E. Wise began his first year at Orrville and his first year as a coach with the lightest and most inexperienced football squad Orrville has had in several years. Eight regulars were missing from the 19 7-'H8 team. In spite of these handicaps Coach Wise sent his team through the toughest schedule with the best record an Orrville team has ever had. His team was unde- feated in high school competition, winning seven games and tying two. Coaches of most of the op- posing teams and many veteran football fans ex- pressed the opinion that the Orrville team was the best coached and the smoothest working team in this section of Alabama. Coach Wise was able to inaugurate an entirely new system in only two weeks and three days. The squad learned this system well enough to use it in their first game against Demopolis. Coach Wise is well-liked in the Orrville community. He has done everything but work mir- acles with some of the boys. He is an excellent should find him with a coaching job this section. ir in one of 5 fm Lil' J N .Hull :.,, xxx xg coach and a few years the larger schools of 'lr lllltlgfel' Not the least of the Blue Torrents' assets, except in size perhaps, was its manager? --Uniuni x .jjJ59C7l2g6ll6?9 -fS2ZllClCi! I J. i Y 1 There are very few coaches that have been as lucky in getting off to a good start and to a coaching career as I have with my first football team. I think the boys deserve the credit for making this such a successful season because they started the season handicapped with a new coach and a new offensive system. They responded fine to both. The whole group had that spirit and will to win and a never-give-up attitude that it takes to p lay a top brand of football. These are things that no coach, no matter how good he is, can give his players--spirit and guts. They must already have that. I want to thank the whole l9M8 football team for making my first year as a coach a successful one. 2542, 61
