Tomorrow we get our diplomas. It seems like a long, long time since we were freshmen. Mrs. McQueen put twenty-two names on her roll-- Margaret Reynolds, Christine Suttles, Carolyn West, Hazel Boggs, Joan Jew- ell Catherine Parker, Lucile Crawford, Marie Parrott, Mary Joy Mansfield Marie Deffke, Betty Shadix James Pegues, Neal Miller, Ralph Walker, Kent Lauderback Nick Lindsay Clova Bridges, E. P. Massey, Pat Knight, John Bennett, Jimmie Gibbs, and Eugene Oliver. Janet Copeland came in dur- ing the second semester. We were ambitious even then. Hazel Boggs and Marie Deffke entered the Her- bert Stallworth oratorical contest. Although neither of them won a prize, we thought they were good. Margaret was our candidate for queen of the Hallowe'en Carnival. And, believe it or not, Diary, we had cheerleaders in our class that year--Pee Wees, that is. Joan and Betty were off to an early start. When we came back to school in the fall, Mrs. Dunaway was our home room teacher. Our class had grown. Sarah Hicks came to us from Catherine, Don- na Israel from Montgomery, and Marion Massey, Tommie and Jack Shoults from Summerfield. The -3 second semester brought us Dolores Stone from X Suttle and Desmond Bridges, who had been with - Uncle Sam's Navy. There were also some losses. Marie Deffke moved to Selma, John Bennett to Demopolis, and Jimmie Gibbs joined the Army. During our sophomore year the Beta Club selec- ted five of our class members--Margaret Rey- nolds, Eugene Oliver, Catherine Parker, James Pegues, and Betty Shadix. Margaret Reynolds was elected cheerleader. Christine Suttles and Ralph Walker were chosen as candidates for S? Q Queen and King of the Ha11owe'en Carnival. We they made a very attractive couple. Our class was really beginning to make its mark. Marga- ret Reynolds and Christine Suttles represented us in the beauty section of the Orr-Bit, and Margaret was selected from among the group of candidates to be Miss C. H. S. This boosted our morale. Z ? had never had a King before, and we thought And now, Diary, our senior year, our big year. Most of us think we know a great deal now. Of course, the teachers have a disagreeable habit of find- ing fault with some of our conclusions. Carolyn West, Joan Jewell, David Weedon, and Betty Jane Cottingham embarked upon the sea of matrimony. All of-them came back to us, however except Carolyn. Home ties claimed her. But we were happy to have Jean Ellen Jewell from the last year's senior one class. She attended summer school and classified as a senior. I0 iigx segggg Christine, Marion, and Margaret were elected cheerleaders--a coveted honor. Margaret was chosen by the senior class to be Miss Homecoming. She was an attractive feature of the parade as she appeared on the float with her King, David Weedon and eleven attendants. She was presented between hal- ves of the football game that evening and received a large bouquet. This was espgcially an honor since it was the first time homecoming had been o serve . Through the years the boys of our class have been active in athletics. We shall be watching, Diary, to see what comes of it. I should not be sur- prised to find some of them taking their places in the world of sports. Next time I write, Diary, I'll be a graduate of Orrville High School. It will be a grand feeling, but it frightens me just a little. I'll tell you more about that next time. CLASSEHISTORIAN O ,L o ' ..-. , 5 325 Q? ' 6QgQS:s PLACE: ORRVILLE HIGH SCHOOL Xxg3E TIM : HOMECOMING CELEBRATION 1959 NCatherine Parker! It's been ages since I saw you! Are you still teaching English here at Orrville High School?H uYes, I am, Joan. I've been here nearly three years now. Homecoming is always a great occasion with us now. I'm so glad you could get here! Did Sam come with you?H UYes, but I have lost him in the crowd. We're having a grand time, seeing everyone we used to know. This is certainly different from that first homecoming. That was the year we were seniors! Do you remember how nice Margaret looked as queen? I wonder where she is now. Do you ever hear from her?N WOh yes! She will be here later on. She's working at Craig Field-- and, would you believe it? She was elected Miss Craig Field last spring. Margaret is still as popular as ever.U NI haven't heard any news in so long! Tell me everything you know. Where is everybody? Am I the only one of our class to get back?H NI should say not! There's Nick Lindsay now. Orrville was lucky to get so successful an agriculture teacher. No girl has quite made the grade with him yet. Eugene can't come though. I got a wire from him from South America this morning. He had gotten the invitation, and wired to let us know that he is on an important job that has to be finished by the end of this month. He is making a name for himself as a civil engineer.H nHow nice! And I saw Glova last Saturday as I came through New Or- leans. You should have seen the Alabama--L. S. U. game! Glova handles his boys nicely. I stayed to speak to Glove and to congratulate him when the game was over. He told me that Marion was there, writing a play by play description for C. B. S., but I never could find her in the crowd. Marion was always good at things like that.N nJoan I got a letter from Betty last week. New Orleans reminded me of it. Betty is private secretary for a rich business man in New York and travels a good bit. She said when she was in New Orleans a few weeks ago she had dinner with Dolores at Antoine's. Dolores is co-owner of it, and Betty said that was the best food she had ever tasted. French, of course! She is quite famous now. Our class is doing fine, I think. Did you see those blue and white pennants in the school building?H nYes I wondered where you got them. They are not ex- 9 actly like the ones we seniors , are they? NNo, indeed! The Since Deryl has bought there has been so much exclusive apartment house in 5 if c Q ordered to sell in 'le-9 when we were Selma Printing Company made these. 9 it out and is managing it himself, A,W Y improvement in their work! And you I r X Dum I'm invited to spend a weekend ,tl 1, with them during the Christmas holidays!U HHow Nice! Catherine, I do miss seeing our old friends! But I had a letter from Lu- cile Crawford the other day. She is a model at Macy's in New York. She specializes in suits and sport clothes. Lucile was always one of the best dressed girls in school. She told me that she went to a baseball game the remember Betty Jane Lowry, I know. She is living in a very Atlanta, Georgia. Her husband is manager of Sears there now. I2 day before I was there, and you'd never guess who was playing first base for the Yankees! Pat Knight! He's making big money with them. She must have an interesting Job. She said Jean Ellen Jewell came in that morning to buy herself an evening gown. She was making her debut at Carnegie Hall that evening, but I was leaving town and didn't get to hear her!U HYou knew Christine and Dan were married soon after graduation, I'm sure,Joan! They are living in their new home just this side of Selma now. You must take time to go by to see them. And I know you remember Mary Joy! She went to business college after she finished here. She must be efficient. I noticed in the Advertiser the other day that she is secre- tary to the Governor.H NI knew she would do well. And the family told us that Pete has done quite well also. He'll make a good senator, and you folks were smart to elect him. Dad tells me he has many influential friends. FUTURE YEARS UYes, indeed. You know David is President of ,- Z the City National Bank, and Neal is President ofiie ,gf C QQ 'gfgu Farm Bureau. Both of them supported Pete. And, of -t 5335 course, I gave him what small help an English teach- l 31 Q A er could. J. C. is operating a chain of service ' ,faq ' stations, and Ralph is a gunsmith in Birmingham. He 4. X Q M - will be here I am sure. He comes home often. They j, !7'W say he has the largest collection of guns in the xx-eaffseffwl' United States. And you will see E. P. too. He lives XMB' -fr'-C5-,,,f 11,. near here. He bought a thousand acre plantation and has stocked it with cattle.n nAnd where are Marie and Janet?N UOh, Janet is buyer for one of the largest firms in Los Angeles. She travels a lot, but she wrote me that she would not be able to come today. Marie will be here though. She was cashier of a Montgomery bank until she married the President. Of course, she is not working now.H HI know you have seen Sarah s picture on the back of Look magazine! She made quite a fortune as an advertising model. But I understand she is going to marry Vic Damone. Oh, I hate to go! But I see Sam looking for me. Come to see us when you are in the West. Oregon is a fine place to live. We'd love to have you come, Catherine. N. E. A. is meeting in Los Angeles again this year and I won t take no for an answer. See you again before I leave though.N 6' . Coach Winton E. Wise began his first year at Orrville and his first year as a coach with the lightest and most inexperienced football squad Orrville has had in several years. Eight regulars were missing from the 19 7-'H8 team. In spite of these handicaps Coach Wise sent his team through the toughest schedule with the best record an Orrville team has ever had. His team was unde- feated in high school competition, winning seven games and tying two. Coaches of most of the op- posing teams and many veteran football fans ex- pressed the opinion that the Orrville team was the best coached and the smoothest working team in this section of Alabama. Coach Wise was able to inaugurate an entirely new system in only two weeks and three days. The squad learned this system well enough to use it in their first game against Demopolis. Coach Wise is well-liked in the Orrville community. He has done everything but work mir- acles with some of the boys. He is an excellent should find him with a coaching job this section. ir in one of 5 fm Lil' J N .Hull :.,, xxx xg coach and a few years the larger schools of 'lr lllltlgfel' Not the least of the Blue Torrents' assets, except in size perhaps, was its manager? I J. i Y 1 There are very few coaches that have been as lucky in getting off to a good start and to a coaching career as I have with my first football team. I think the boys deserve the credit for making this such a successful season because they started the season handicapped with a new coach and a new offensive system. They responded fine to both. The whole group had that spirit and will to win and a never-give-up attitude that it takes to p lay a top brand of football. These are things that no coach, no matter how good he is, can give his players--spirit and guts. They must already have that. I want to thank the whole l9M8 football team for making my first year as a coach a successful one. 2542, 61 KA QQPAQJQPJ N N Q N if Q x 'dt xi X ' Y hh 62 wx . In an 6 ORRVILLE--DEMOPOLIS Time ran out on a battered and bruised Orrville eleven when the final whistle caught them on their opponents' 2 yard line, first down and goal to go. The contest ended Orrville O Demopolis O. It was a hard fought, uphill and downhill battle as Demopolis presented a sturdy, hard-charging line and Orrville displayed a courageous defense during the first half. Most of this part of the game was played in Orr- ville's territory. In the second half Winton Wise's boys made one threat after another un- til the whistle ended the game. Capt. Glova Bridges was the most outstanding player with his hard tack- ling and pass defense. Joe Knight and Ralph Walker were outstanding in the line. Demopolis gained 110 yards rushing, completed 2 passes for 52 yards and made lO first downs. The fans saw two evenly matched teams that night. ORRVILLE--CAMDEN Coach Wise's Torrents reached into the fire and pulled out a l9-7 vic- tory over Connie McKelvie's Camden Tigers Sept. 24 after trailing 7-6 at the halftime. Orrville took a 6-O lead early in the first quarter on a pass from Bridges to Kelly. The try for the point failed. Camden scored in the second quarter on a 60-yard drive and made the ex- tra point. The halftime score: Camden 7, Orrville 6. The break came early in the third quarter Punt and Oliver scooped up the ball and ran Torrents' 12th point. Knight's conversion was good. Bridges again broke the ice and Camden's back when he threw another pass to Kelly for a touchdown. Late in the last quarter, Kelly intercepted a Camden ariel and raced 80 when E. P. Massey blocked a the remaining yards for the yards. This score was called back on a penalty. Outstanding for Orrville were Edwards, Walker, and Davis. ' ea ORRVILLE -- LINDEN Orrvil1e's Blue Torrents blocked punts, recovered fumbles, passed, and ran to an overwhelming 35-O victory over Linden on the Torrents' ,home field October 1st.' Orrville totaled 17 first downs to Linden's 8 to rack up their five touchdowns, and Pat Knight converted the five extra points without a bob- ble to round off the 35 points scored. In the punting department, Orrvi1le's Pat Kelly booted the ball three times, his kicks going for 55 yards, M7 yards, and the last was kicked out of bounds on the Linden 9 yard line. The Blue Torrents scored in the first quarter on a 27 yard run by Brid- ges, twice in the second quarter once after a Linden punt was blocked on the Linden 30-yard line, and again after a 35 Yard pass from Bridges to Oliver placed the ball on the Linden 20. Oliver ran it over for the score. Orrvi11e's fourth touchdown was set up when a Linden punt was blocked on their 22 yard line. The fifth came when Pat Knight covered a Linden fumble on their M3 yard line. Childres, Oliver, and Patterson carried the ball to the 5 and Bridges bucked it over for the final score. ORRVILLE -- MCKENZIE The Torrents captured their third game of the '48 season when they ham- mered out a 28-O win over McKenzie. Halfback Billy Childres shot through left-tackle on the second play of the game and raced M8 yards for a touchdown. Orrville scored four touch- downs and Pat Knight kicked all four points after touchdowns to run his string up to nine in a row. Billy Childres, Feg Patterson, and Sollie Oliver divided the running honors after McKenzie had failed to gain after receiving the kickoff with Childres racking up the second score on an 8-yard slant off guard, Fumbles kept Orrville from threatening further in the first half. ORRVILLE-- PERRY COUNTY Orrville and Perry County played to a terrific 6-6 tie in Marion on October 15 as two evenly matched teams played an extremely hard but cl.ean game trying to overcome the deadlock. Orrville kicked off to Perry County and they were forced to punt. The punt bounced off Ke11y's shoulder pads, and Perry County recovered. Two plays later Perry County scored. It was the third period when hard running by Billy Childres and Sollie Oliver worked the ball to the Perry County 25 where the drive slowed down. Perry County took over but fumbled a few plays later when Oliver tackled the runner. Glova Bridges recovered and Billy Childres, aided by good blocking by Pete Pegues and Joe Knight out through right tackle for the score. The try for the point was no good. Orrville racked up 13 first downs to Perry County's 6 but always found the goal line defense too strong to score. A desperate bid for victory gasimage by Orrville on the final play when Pat Knight missed a field goal y ,nc es. Glova Bridges did some fine passing, one going no yards to Joe Knight, 69 ORRVILLE -- PINE HILL The Torrents continuedllthiir victory march Oct. 22 with a 20-6 triumph M D i l ' Pine Hi e even. ovegegogatigrioi set up the first touchdown for Orrville when he returned Pine Hill's punt, after they had bogged down on the first series of play, for 62 yards to the 18 yard stripe where it took Billy Child-TGS 2 P3-HYS to score. Pat Knight made the oint good. The second score came on a EO-yard pass from Bridges to Oliver. This time Knight's point was blocked. Orrville led at halftime 13-O. Bridges completed 12 out of 17 passes. ORRVILLE -- HAYNEVILLE Orrville won its sixth game of the season in Orrville Oct. 29 in a con- test played on a field of water. Playing their hardest-driving and most spirited contest of the season, Orrville lost little time racking up their first score in the opening period when Glova Bridges laid a 12-yard pass in the arms of Joe Knight on the goal line. Bridges also passed to Knight for the point. Morgan Edwards recovered a Hayneville fumble on the one-yard line for the Torrents in the second quarter. Patterson ran it over for the score. The try for the point failed. Orrville led at the end of the third quarter with a 13-O score. Another recovery of an opponent's fumble set up the final score of the half. Bridges scored from the 2-yard line after a series of line plays worked down to that spot. Instead of kicking the point, Pat Knight passed to his brother Joe in the endzone. A thrilling return of an interception by Bridges set up Orrville's fi- nal score. Bridges passed from the 15 to Bo Davis who was standing in the endzone for a touchdown. Joe Knight, Pete Pegues E. P. Massey, and Morgan Edwards were outstand- ing igithe line while Cecil Moore and Pat Kelly turned in good jobs in the ack eld. MARION INSTITUTE -- ORRVILLE The Marion Institute B's blasted the Blue Torrents on November 12 with a 33-O score to halt Winton Wise's 8-game streak without a loss. Wise, in the game that saw several of his regulars sidelined with injuries, nearly lost the remainder of his varsity as injuries ran rampant through the squad. Led by the running and passing of Holiday, the running of Boyd and Scott and the line play of their two guards, Plier and Nichols, the Marion team poured on the heat from the opening whistle to the final. They scored a touchdown in the first quarter, added two in the second, scored another in the third, and a final score in the fourth quarter. Before being removed from the game,Bridges kept the Orrville club in the game with his passes to Joe Knight, but soon both were sidelined and the Blue Torrents' attack faded. N., vo .. A355 r ISABELLA -- ORRVILLE The Torrents gave up a touchdown in the first minute of play November 17 before turning on the heat to swamp Isabella, 36-7. Orrville received to open the game and after Kelly and Patterson found the ball too elusive, lost possession of it, and Isabella recovered the fumble on the Orrville 20. A try at the Torrent line was discouraging and Isabella staged its offensive thrust of the night when Jones found Giles in the endzone and passed for the first score of the game Rasberry bucked over the extra point, and Isa- bella led after 5 seconds of play 7-O. Isabella kicked off to Orrville, and Sollie Gliver returned the kickoff ten yards to his own M3, then drove through the middle into Isabella terri- tory on a ten-yard off-tackle trip. Patterson and Kelly carried the ball down to the 2-yard line. Here Bridges took over and shot a bullet pass into the waiting arms of Bo Davis for Orrville's first score. Pat Knight, who has kicked extra points sensationally, failed on his first attempt. Orrville trailed, 7-6. Knight's kickoff was taken on the visitors' 28 where they bogged down on two attempts at the stubborn Orrville forward wall. They tried their pass play again, but Patterson took the ball and wheeled 55 yards for the second Orrville touchdown with Oliver furnishing the block needed. Orrville was ahead for the first time in the game, 12-7, and added two more touchdowns in the second quarter. The score at halftime was 24-7, and Orrville was going after its seventh victory. Kelly racked up the fifth counter in the third period and scored another in the fourth period. Out- standing for Orrville were J.C. Bridges, Bo Davis, Ralph Walker, E. P. Mas- sey,and Pat Knight. 71 I ll!-as 26? -- QER5 PEE WEE TEAM Orrville Orrville Orrville Orrville Orrville Orrville Orrville Orrville Orrville x min if, -fyff k gr , .-L, as 73- 5512-if Qf4,Z,2f,, 'xfgziiez ,rx .
