After quite a bit of stalling, Mark Scott, the M.C., announced Cindy Leonard 1976 Homecoming Queen. The crowd sat silent for a moment, in surprise. But even more surprised was the Sophomore Queen herself. Shortly afterwards there was applause, the crowning and the queen drove off in a new 1977 Corvette. We’ll never forget the L.P. rally where Stuart Bunstock had everyone ready to pull their hair out as he imitated a person known as Felix Fudpucker. He did ev-rything very slooooooow. The Juniors won the majority of the spirit bucket competetions and tried a few new things that captured the attention of the judges. Every rally contained the maximum amount of spirit possible. Many thanks to Patty Bolt who was our SPIRIT COMMISSIONER. 1) Greg Andoe. Along came basketball season and so did our two new Co-Rally Commissioners. Rhonda Mastelotto and Laurie Brandt livened up the rallies and added their special touches. One of the better basketball rallies was the one held on Funky Friday. Everyone was pleased with the routine the songleaders made-up to the fifties music. Spirit began to drift a little, but by the time the Nisbet Spirit Week was here, that completely changed. The gym was full of students and the visiting Nisbet teams. Mark Brown presented a skit which included the visiting Nisbet team captains. It was hard to hear what they were saying over all the laughing. Something new was tried out a few times at other rallies. Instead of having class competition consisting of chants, a jug was brought around and the holder of the jug lifted and covered the top of the jug. When it was uncovered, the class yelled as loud as possible, then quit when it was recovered. The Nisbet Spirit Week rally was the last Basketball rally held for the 1976-1977 school year. There was talk about having a Baseball rally later in the year. 1) Laurie Brandt and Rhonda Mastelotto our great co-rally commissioners. 2) Seniors are intense with rally activities. 3) Visiting Nisbet teams 4) Charolette Ross receives a powder job. This was the fourth year that the 50's were brought back to the high school. There seemed to be more students who dressed up than in previous years. At noon a sock hop was held in the student union and the girls had fun teaching each other the latest 50's dances and trying to coax the guys into joining in on the fun. The rally was filled with songs of long ago and spirit that would not end. Spirit Bucket competition consisted of a skit and a race between the king and queen candidates from each class. In the king and queen race, the candidates had to drink a chocolate malt, run down to the other end of the gym, each get the end of a piece of licorice and eat it, then run back to the other end of the gym. The sophomores placed first and the seniors second. After the skits were presented, the judges elected the sophomores the winners. Inbetween the J.V. and Varsity games the Freshmen were announced the winners by Shelley Von Berg, the M.C. Another sock hop was held after the game, to everyone’s enjoyment. 1) SENIORS-Diane Manning and Gene Walker 2) JUNIORS-Teresa Costa and Tom Woman 3) SOPHOMORES-Amelia Rodriguez and Mark Gallagher 4) The NUGGET Staff would like to give special thanks to AL for his FANTASTIC photography 5) FRESHMAN Funky Friday Winners Wendy Eck and Ricky Villanueva 6) All the King and Queen Candidates 7) Don't worry babe, he's just a NERD!!! 8) Everyone enjoyed learning the STROLL Funky Friday 1977 89 Tears for the T-Birds - the Bell is ours! Early in the season, most thought of the Varsity team as being just so-so. But, as the nine week season progressed the team showed great improvement. Starting the year off with Todd Kaylor at the quarterback position and then changing over that position to Junior Richard Gallegos mid-season, the team of Gallegos passing to Kaylor became a favorite one. By far the two most exciting games were those played a-gainst L.P. and Chico. The Tigers clawed their way through the Thunderbird line to claim a 14-0 victory and the coveted Victory Bell. Then there was the Chico game. A Chico newspaper had Oroville listed as the underdogs; Chico winning. At one point in that game the score was 27-13, Tigers on top! This was a make or break game for Chico and Oroville broke all hopes Chico had. The Tigers were on the way to a possible League Championship. The second to the last game, we lost to the eventual League Champions; Pleasant Valley, in a hard fought, close game of 7-3. Playing through flash-floods and chill winds the Tigers ended the year with a 4-5 record. 92 Varsity Football 1) Richard Ferretti (8). brought down by a local T-bird but not before Rich racked up the yardage 2) Todd (Jock) Kaylor (6). makes an elegant swan dive into the T-bird defense for another first down and quarterback keeper Stu Bunstock (60) and Gene Walker (64) block. 3) Dale Stapleton (49). and Rich Gallegos (12). use their great blocking ability to make the way for Rich Ferretti (8). 4) Rich Ferretti (8). gets to the outside to pick up yet MORE yards for the Tigers against L.P. 5) Dale Holcomb makes a stop for the Tigers while Dan Maguire (63). congratulates his efforts. 6) MORE yards for Dick! Next year they should again be up in the top to take the league championship. 1) J.V.'s |ump of the line as they start against P.V. 2) Dewey Miller outkicks his opponent through the water jump at Copley Acres 3) No sign of the other team as the J.V.'s move on through the course. Cross-Country Off to a good start The freshman were off to a good start this year placing fourth in the sections. As in all the teams the freshman were a dedicated team with quite a bit of depth and some excellent running ability. Doug VanCamp and Don Murphy were the leaders of the team which really helped them a lot. Next year the freshman will look great again as they are willing to do. With a little bit of hard work and dedication they have, it should be a real good season for the class of 1980. 1) The frosh are ready for the start as they look for the gun to sound. 2) Doug VanCamp remains ahead of his team mate. Craig Rice as they go into the water jump at Copley Acres. 3) Don Gamon stays ahead of his opponent as he strides around Copley Acres Frosh 103 Sharp Shooters The Varsity team looked sharp this season with a lot of depth from the experienced seniors and the new Varsity player’s (juniors) talents. Calvin Weinberg, captain for the first half of the season, really looked good on the court shooting from any spot and usually adding two points each time for the Tigers. Jeff Holland also ran up the score with his shots and lay ups under the basket. Mark Orby” Scott shot his usual 18-22 footers to make the opponants think twice to leave him open even out that far. Terry Tunnell gave the Tigers the upper level to bring down many rebounds while Larry Whitman (captain for second half of season), also helped out Tunnell with the big rebounds and a few points on the side, to make the team over power other teams. Marc Aleck looked good in dribbling and being able to shoot the ball. The Varsity team still looks promising for the future. 1) Marc Aleck brings the ball down for the Tigers. 2) Calvin Weinberg shoots two for Oroville. 3) Mark Scott shows his dribbling skills. 4) Mark grabs the ball from San Juan. 5) Jeff Holland puts in two points. C.MacAtee Varsity Basketball 105 Oroville Settles for Second Place Tie This year's Nisbet Tournament was as exciting as usual. The Pleasent Hill Rams took first place with a +65. Oroville and Paradise tied with a + 33 points. The last game of the tournament was the final LP Oroville rivalry of the season. Oroville went into that game tied with Paradise. At the start the Tigers seemed to have a tough time finding the basket with shots just bouncing all around but never finding the hole. By half time LP led Oroville 20-16. At the end of the third quarter Oroville was looking strong getting 8 points to LP's 2. This stuck the Tigers in the lead with only a little over 1 minute left. In the fourth quarter both teams shuffled to keep the lead. As the crowd was going wild LP made a 17 footer that swished through the basket putting LP on top with only 17 seconds left on clock. Oroville came back down looking for a winning basket but instead Tony Carr was fouled. After a time out, with LP looking for a miss and Oroville looking for a make, Tony made his first shot tying the score at 37-37. He shot his second shot missing but the ball went out of bounds by a LP player giving the ball to Oroville. The Tigers brought the ball back in bounds with only 6 seconds left hoping to make the next shot to win LP for the 4th time this year. With a desperation shot Oroville hits the back of the rim just missing to end up with the 37-37 tie and a very exciting way to end up the tournament. Calvin Weinberg and Mark Scott received All Tourney honors. 1) Oroville leaps for the ball against Pleasent Hill 2) Richmond drops in two. 3) LP sets up for a shot. 4) Richmond steals one from LP 5) LP just can't quite score against Richmond. 106 Nisbet Tourney Future looks good for Varsity (L TO R) S.Cheff. Dan Mastelotto added points for the kittens and picked up valuable rebounds. Rusty Brandt showed his defensive moves plus added points to the scoreboard. The tigers ought to look like a winner next year with this kind of support for the Varsity Team. 1) Larry Hilton looks for someone to pass off to. 2) Mark Walsh shoots from the top of the key to add points to Oroville's score 4) Tommy Johnson shows his fancy dribbling skills to the fans as Korte Wamsley blocks out any opponents from getting the ball. Todd Richie, the Captain, also helped out with the scoring. Nick Brandt also put in a helping hand until he broke it which allowed Bob Menefee and Jerry Openshaw to see action. Dan Hilton looked good on the court rebounding for the future Tigers. Mike Tunnel also helped out the team with their winning season. Matt Mackenzie looked great in the high jump while Jeff Holland and Dave Meyers stood out in the running events. Greg Perucci was the one in the shot while Mark Brown makes tough competition in the disc. The annual switched to company paste-up. No more sticky glue or messy copy; our book is neater and more organized. Editors Carrie Nichols and Muriel Dunn took a trip last summer to Santa Barbara to a seminar on constructing yearbooks. From this conference they brought back the paste-up idea, which they found is the popular way to go, and many new theme and layout ideas. But switching wasn't all fun and games. There were the 1:30 a.m. nights before deadlines where the staff wearily worked to get their pages completed. Then there was the problem of figuring out all the new forms and contraptions and the crisis when 59 pages were thought lost in transit to the plant in Visalia. But our staff can proudly say with only 3 returning from last year, we were the first staff to complete all deadlines on time. We would especially like to thank the following people: Mr. Kramer, for his undying faith and support, Dick Daniels and American Yearbook Co.-without them it literally wouldn't have been possible, Noel Goursolle and Al Yamamoto (Coronet Studios) for their fantastic photography work and Kodak for copyright permission to use Times of Your Life.” We hope you have enjoyed your '77' Nugget ' n 226 Nugget Staff TOP TO BOTTOM Jeff Holland.
