Counseling groups were held involving a small group of students and teachers alike to help prevent problems. The Orientation Group turned out to be very successful!. A few teachers volunteered their prep, period to meet with small groups of freshmen. The purpose was to offer suggestions, what it's like to a freshman, and an opportunity to ask any questions. A program likely to take place in the counseling department is the Vocational Guidance Groups. It is small groups of students that meet with counselors to explore occupations and vocational interests. After many years of counseling at O.H.S. Mrs. Kunkel is retiring. The club studied the lives of Martin Luther King Jr., Eldridge Cleaver, and Malcolm X. These three people were picked to study so as to be able to touch all aspects on the Black Movement of America. The activities of the club over the year included bake sales, a dinner with a talent show, and a Martin Luther King Jr. memorial program. Members plan a Black Scholarship award with the money from their activities. Rural Recreation Club LEFT: Mayo Reyes, president; Rusta Legget, secretary; Dan Boone, treasurer; and Stacy Cunningham, vice-president. The O. H. S. JEFF ZUNDEL 93 MARSHA DAVIS DEBBIE LIGHTLE (head) SHERI COLBY OUR OHS SONG LEADERS During the past year Peggy, Debbie, Barbara, Marsha, Sheri, and Debbie have enjoyed their duties as songleaders. In June of last year, three girls in the group went to a songleaders camp at Squaw Valley for four days. There they were taught several routines and clants which they brought back to the rest of the group to use in our coming school year rallies. During the rest of the summer, the girls practiced hard making up routines and smoothing over the rough spots in them. They worked several nights a week for usually about two hours each night. At their first few rallies as you probably noticed, they always wondered whether their routines were very good and what you, the student body, thought of them. But as more and more time passed, as well as rallies, they became more confident in themselves and their routines. They also began to realize that they were rather privileged at having been chosen as songleaders at OHS for the school year 1971-1972. Shari attended football and basketball games in Tigerette costume doing her acrobatic routines and stunts. Cheerleaders Another first in 72 was the bevy of Frosh Cheerleaders. For a long time the freshmen have needed support and leadership in the spirit and yelling department—a need very ably met by Julie, Helen, Rita and Kathy. THE ALMA MATER Freshmen showed their spirit on Monday. Their activities included a Spirit Town ' featuring a Tiger Boutique and Spirit Theater. Freshmen also won the Tug-of-War battle on Tuesday. Spirit A bright Tuesday helped sophomore spirit. Seniors won the sophomore tricycle race, but sophomores came in first with spirit during the tournament assembly and won the Victory bucket. Juniors whooped it up Wednesday noon. The roller skate brigade whipped through the quad area to the live junior band and torch singer. Chi-chi Hodge. Junior candidate, Jill Black, won the lemon-eating contest on Friday. Week FEBRUARY 29th — MARCH 2nd The seniors WON spirit week. This was due to their creative ideas, such as the 72 Tiger, the Senior Band, and giving out corsages to the faculty as bribes. Under Mr. Loch's fine direction, this was a fantastic comedy. The second production was Death of a Salesman . Under the capable direction of Mr. Bruce Roundy and the assistance of Mrs. Boyer, many difficult problems were overcome. In the end this proved to be an excellent play. The last production was Brave New World , a satire about the future. With Mr. Loch back, this challenging production was very well done. Special thanks should be offered to the people behind the scenes. Without them the productions would not have been possible. Act 2: Try it, you'll like it. The title didn't hold true for the first game of the year with the tough Orland team which fell before the Tiger onslaught. In the second game—with Shasta—the Tigers did not fare as well. Mistakes in key defensive situations hurt us, said Coach Burnum and set about correcting the situation. Tigers had some outstanding plays in the Red Bluff game and were pretty confident until they came up to the brute force of the Enterprise Hornets which gave them a real taste of the varsity drag. In the first league game—with Pleasant Valley—the defense was good but the Vikings had the speed. The Tigers couldn't stop the Lassen Grizzly drive either. There were some anxious moments in the Paradise game but the Tigers scraped by with a win. Every member of the offensive and defensive units contributed key plays in all-out efforts. Kevin Powers (64), Dave Silva (10), Pat Holmes (65), Steve Rocchi (54), Dan Boone (20), Randy Smith (74), Dallas (81), Bob Hottinger (14), Wayne Wilson (86), Ransbarger (63) Randy Frieze (87), Brian Whitlock. Coach Clark Coach Burnum The Tigers kept the Victory Bell in the annual crosstown rivalry game with Las Plumas. Our goal line defense had to be one of the greatest things I have ever seen, observed Coach Burnum at the end of this football highlight of the season. Chico Panthers literally walked over the Tigers at the last and Homecoming game on a cold and damp night. The loss dropped Oroville (2 wins-3 losses) into fourth place in the Eastern Athletic League standing. Tom Hill (61) came out with some excellent defensive tackling to help win the Paradise game. Team captain John Howarth (66) received the Most Valuable Player award for his '72 performance. His defensive tackling was outstanding in the Red Bluff and Pleasant Valley games. Steve Klein (88) our Outstanding Lineman, took the 63-yard pass-play for the lone OHS touchdown in the Lassen game. Junior Varsity Football Coach Wegner and coach Hottell (right) were as pleased with the skill and teamwork development as they were disappointed in the team!s winning record. The boys will be an asset to next year's Varsity team. 160 Possibly the biggest factor pertaining to the J. V. 's poor scoring record were the large amount of injuries to key players. Quarterback Mark Heaslip suffered a knee injury which excluded him from playing in key games. Other disappointments included injuries to Bill Rocchi's hand, and Kurt Thompson's shin. Coaches Arnold and McNulty watch on as their Freshmen go in for another score against L. P. This year’s Freshmen had a tough schedule this year, starting out against the tough Anderson team. It was a tough defensive game, in which our Frosh gave up only 7 points, but themselves were held scoreless. Their next game was against Red Bluff and again their defense was very tough, keeping the other team to a small 6 points, but were again held scoreless. It wasn’t until their last 3 games that their offense got rolling, outscoring their opponents 40 to 6. They finished their season with a big win over our cross-town rivals L. P., with an 18 to 6 score. 164 FRESHMAN FOOTBALL The scores below do not reflect the effort put out by this year's Freshmen. They had a very tough defense, with Glenn Finkenkeller at end. Other standouts were Rick Medford, tackle, Mike Ferretti, Q.B., Ted Runge, tailback, John Fridrich, linebacker. Perry Dorman, flanker, and David Conner at the guard position. The team captains were Mike Ferretti, David Conner, and Perry Dorman. The pre-season goal for the varsity was to win the Northern Section Championships. The team fell short by a scant four points. There was only one loss in the dual meet schedule, a feat accomplished for the third straight year. At the Marysville Invitational, all three Oroville teams took top honors. Perhaps the highlight of the year was the 3rd place finish at the Rio Linda Invitational with over 50 schools competing. The varsity team will be hit hard by graduation for the 1972 season. Tom Blake, Gary Rayome, Gary Casagrande, Ty Smith and Dan Warren will all be graduating. The team's number one runner, Calvin Lantrip, will be returning to lead a group of very strong runners who will be seniors next year. Among the strong juniors who will return are Brian Tulley, Richard Morehouse, and John Sylvester. The team will also get a strong boost from the J. V. team that finished 4th in N. S. Championships. So with the aid of three freshmen they placed first in the Marysville Invitational. Tom Jones won the Outstanding J.V. Runner of the Year Award. Captain Brad Fulton, Glen Williams and David Townsend rounded out the rest of the team. Although lacking in manpower they made up for it with enthusiasm as they ran well all year. He succeeded in scoring 140 field baskets and 81 free throws for a total of 361 team points. The freshman team is not lacking in individual talent. Mike Ferretti (No. 11, above right) shoots a field goal as Joel Martin (31) gets ready to grab a possible rebound. Outstanding performances were turned in by Mike Ferretti, scoring 25 field baskets and 38 free throws, and Joel, shooting 33 field baskets and 35 free throws. David Conners sends the ball into the basket for another score. A total of 751 points were scored this season. High point scorers were Alston with 361 points; Martin, 101; Feretti, 88; Felipe, 51; and Conners, 39. 178 The freshman team, coached by Mike Gabriel pictured above with his boys during an intermission, won only 8 of the 21 games played. However, there was a steady inprovement in teamwork and skills— the real objective of the freshmen team. Oroville closed the 1972 basketball season by hosting the J. C. Nisbet Tournament March 4,5, and 6th. In one of the most spirited and competitive events yet, the Tigers came out ON TOP with the winning points gained in the last game. ! Oroville team members (left) Terry Warren, Ron Ransbarger, and Mike Mahlum accept winning team awards from Debbie Russell, Tournament Queen. Pleasant Valley took second place and Grant Union from Sacramento came in third. J. C. Diablo; Kyle Grossart, Pleasant Valley; John Brattan, Pleasant Valley; Rich Hughes, Davis; Steve Kincannon, Davis; Bill Lauer, Oroville; Kirk Smith, Red Bluff; and Rocky Smith, Oroville. Varsity Wrestling The OHS wrestling team, under the direction of Coach Hottell, had a disappointing season as far as winning meets. However, a great deal of experience gained in the matches should prove valuable in next year's contests. Oroville placed 5th in the Nevada Union Invitational and 6th (last) in the E A. L. Tournament—showing that improvement is one of the important features of next yesr's team. Coach Hottell feels that the inexperience of the team shows up in the poor match showing. Jeff Williams, Dale Sanders, Dan Cobbler, A1 Wood, Dave Franks, Pat Holmes, Steve Callaway, Rick Morehouse, and Dave Morton will be returning next year with more experience and prospects look bright. Charles Scoot, Tom Straws, and Gary Casagrande were this year's senior wrestlers. Tom Straws holds his man to the mat with one hand. Team scores were down, but a number of promising wrestlers, as Glen Finkenkeller and Roy Hall, were gaining experience and will be back to add power to our future wrestling teams. Heavy head-gear and 16 ounce gloves kept the possibility of injury very low, although there were a few bloody noses. Referee Grant Broadway did an excellent job of looking after the youths in the ring, another good way of preventing injury. One of the best bouts of the night was when David Gramps scored a TKO over Ray Bechtol. Another good bout was Mayo Reyes showing his superior talent against David Adams. The winners of each match were awarded a golden glove as the losers received bronze gloves. Larry Stevens get ready to throw a hard left as Emilio Reyes prepares to defend himself. 185 Varsity Track Row 1: John Hoover,Dan Cobbler,Dan Warren,Jeff Zundell,Gary Casagrande, Richard Morehouse, Jeff Me Inturf. T.S.F.C. is a new club chartered this year by the .Cross Country team to get funds to help the runners enter in AAU meets between seasons. Several races were run this year by these long distance runners such as: Pepsi Cola 20 Miler, Daly City Hill Run (6.8 miles), Petaluma Marathon (26 miles), 12 Kilometer Championships, and the New Ways Five Mile Run. Mr. Kovats deserves a lot of credit for the success of these races. He has acted as coach, gained information and provided transportation to these meets. 190 Oh, the pain of it all Rusty Weeks attempts the Warren Special Indian Back-over Buffalo Jump. With these parting seniors, the OHS track team will lose a lot of talent, and Zundell too. 191 This year's Varsity tennis has shown great ability to win and are looking forward to wining their league this year. We hope we have gained knowledge and experiences that will guide us in future years. Teachers and friends will no doubt be missed. Even the school may be missed by some, for the four quick years that have just passed in our lives have been happy years for most of us. Now that we have passed through this door in our lives we must strive harder to reach the goals we have set for ourselves.
