He says she's not always like that. Really she's quite a loveable cat. Here Joar is wearing his Norwegian ski sweater—handmade by his talented mother and sister. J a is pictured in his native 'speider dra r vhich meant scout uniform. He is a rover scout, similar to our explorers, and has been for five years. Joar learns the American way of pool, coached by these two fast-talking pool sharks, Scott and Eric. A bit of Norway comes to Oroville My name is Joar Hoel Larsen, and I come from a small town in Norway called Vestby, which is situated twenty-five miles south of the capital, Oslo. I attend a school called S ki, Gymnas, which is about ten miles from Vestby. To get there, I and the other students from Vestby, have to go on the train. My father, Henry M. Larsen, is the superintendent of schools in Vestby. My mother Eva Larsen, is a housewife, and my sister Sissel, who is twenty, is working for her teachers credentials. Vestby is kind of a suburb of Oslo, because half of the people there work in the capital. This year there are one hundred twenty-three Norwegian A. F. S. students here. VJb left Norway on August third by train, going to Rotterdam, Holland, where we were supposed to go aboard a ship taking us to New York. In the harbor, however, the ship broke down, and eight hundred-eight students from fourteen countries had to stay in Rotterdam nine days. The last days we left for different airports, and one hundred-forty of us, ail going to California, went to Paris where we boarded the plane taking us to Los Angeles. I have really enjoyed my stay in Oroville, thanks to my wonderful American family, the students at Oroville High, who have been real nice to me and accepted me as one of them. I was lucky coming to the Tandy family. I came to their house and they treated me as a son from the first day; and that is the reason why I have not been homesick at all. I want to thaik them, the A. F. S. chapter who made it possible for me to come here and all of you that were Joar poses here with his American family. Joar singS while Eric plays, Clockwise---Eric , Mr. Tandy, Mrs. Tandy, what a jolly twosome! Joar, and Scott. 57 Qftanet P flfaaits 0fflcial Nu99et Photographer Sandra Abts This year we are very proud to honor Sandra Abts and David Richter as Outstanding Senior Girl and Boy. To be chosen as Outstanding Seniors is indeed an honor. Again this year the heads of each department chose a girl and boy who they felthad excelled in leadership, scholastic ability, participation in school activities, and personality. Mr. Lucas and Mr. Johnson made the final decision from the names submitted. To Sandra and David — CONGRATULATIONS!! Presents OUTSTANDING SENIORS David Richter 58 The Senior Class of 1968is leaving Oroville High-School with many fond memories. As Freshmen, Orientation Day was both exciting and confusing. What did it mean? ? Making new friends for some and one more step up the ladder of success for others. Not very much happened during our Freshman year as we were a rather meek class. As a matter of fact, I guess the most important thing we did was to win the Victory Bucketfor having the best valentine. It was beautiful though!! Vicki Stringfellow represented the Freshman Class in the Homecoming Queen Contest. As Sophomores we oegan to unfold. There was more general spirit within the class. Again this year we won the Victory Bucket for showing the most Halloween spirit with our live pumpkin, portrayed by Miriam Goddard. Grub's Day was held for the first time in two years and was a success. This year we were honored to have Sandra Abts as our Home commg queen candidate. She came very close to taking the crown from the Seniors, but in the end they finally won. Our Junior year we really came out of our shell. The class as a whole began to take an interest in sports and other school functions. Do some of you girls remember the Powder Puff Football Game? ? It was 3 great game right up to the end when Patti Hills made a running play and tied the score at a grand total of 7-7. And for the first time in five years a Junior was crowned Homecoming Queen. Rosie Rogers made a beautiful queen and reigned over the dance after the big game. As Juniors we were required to put on the Junior Prom. It received many favorable comments and was acclaimed as far as Southern California. The theme was Avril a Paris and the scene was a typical French cafe. We even brought the Eiffel Tower over! This year has been our best. We came back this year with a feeling of superiority and have upheld it since the beginning, but at the same time we have had many disappointments. The Senior Hall is no longer ours—it has been given to the Freshmen. But we have been working, trying to revive some of the other Senior Traditions. As a major project this year the Senior Class has spear-headed the adoption of a foster child. We also took much pride in having Karen Peterson as Homecoming Queen our last and final year. We know this yeails class will be leaving with many memories but we also hope that we are leaving a few behind. Our thanks to the Faculty and Administration for four wonderful years of High School. 59 60 This year has been rather enjoyable for Oroville High School; Juniors planted a tree to take the place of the one that was chopped down at the beginning of the year and again painted a tiger on the sidewalk. Sophmores were surprised by having their candidate win the title of J.C. Nisbit Tourney Queen. Freshman showed a tremendous amount of spirit this year by winning the spirit bucket several times to the surprise of the whole school. There is a lot of activity in one school year. Not just games, rallies, assemblies, dances and extracurricular activities, but many ordinary, every day things that are an important part of school life. Catching the bus, rushing to class, meeting your friends around campus, and having lunch in the usually crowded Student Union are the ordinary things that make-up school life. Now all this has ended, and all that remains are the memories. .. 124 125 Our teachers are always so willing to demonstrate. One.....two......DIVE ! Classrooms O. H. Nisbit tournament, for mall y the Acker Tournament, was held on February 28, 29, and March 1, here at Oroville High. Seven teams arrived for the three day event. Games, started at 5:00 and lasted until about 10:30. According to the rules, each team plays all others once. Games are played in rapid succession and are shortened to 5 min. quarters. The winning.or losing of games plays no part in determining the winner, it is only the net score which counts. The net score is determined bv totaling all points scored by a team and subtracting from this the points scored against them. Thus, some teams can and did end up with minus scores. The strategy during the games was to score every possible point against the opponent. 189 Row 1: Carey Richardson, Mike MacDonald, Curtis Mettling, Jack Alpers, Mike Higgins, Butch Demerse.
