Text from Pages 1 - 236 of the 1966 volume:

It takes many people to compose a student body, but one has to have responsibility, dedication, and reliability to become a leader. He has to have a sense of authority and organization and a leadership ability. These students of Oroville High represent only a few of our promising students who will undoubtedly reach a goal of success: Steven Kantola, Student Body President; Steven Phelps, Block O Custodian; Buck Gee, C.S.F. President; Judy Johnson, G.A.A. President, and the spirit and enthousiasm of our school evoked by Kathy Herina, Head Cheerleader, Jane Owens, Head Songleader, and Cheryl Burris, Head Majorette. We are very hon ored to welcome Nonee Rahim, our foreign exchange student from Singapore. These students are representatives of our student body, and to them, as to all graduates, we wish luck and success. OROVILLE HIGH SCHOOL PRESENTS NUGGET ’66 Dear Reader, The Nugget '66 binds the memories of the 1965-1966 school year into a treasured volume, to which we eill return many times over the years. The Class of 1966 has added various memories to the history of their high school days. The passing of a close and dear friend , Bill Winston, has given his friends the meaning of a lasting friendship: loyalty, devotion, and understanding. We shall never forget him nor the things he has done. The C 1 a s s of '66 was also the last class to have occupied the now condemned main building. The deserted, lifeless building was once the height of bustling student activity; now, quiet descends upon it. The Nugget'66 records pictorially the joys, disappointments , academic achievements, and failures of the past year. Each person has a special reserved feeling for the year. For the seniors, it is a completion of four years, both active and studious, and for the freshmen, a beginning. The high school years slip by quickly, but they are treasured years, filled with glowing memories we shall never forget. The Nugget '66 presents these Golden Memories to you. 3 Sincerely, The Editor Bill Winston Erin Schram Empty and desolate; soon to be Quiet and silent; soon to be filled Left over and forgotten, filled with talking and laughter. with noise and excitement ■ BOARD OF TRUSTEES for the 1965-66 school year consisted of Darrell Kister, J.W. Miner, Joe Wheeler, Mary P. Dayton, and Mrs. Virginia Murphy. The Board controls and directs the operation of both Las Plumas and Oroville High Schools . DR. RICHARD V. JONES is the superintendent for the 1965-66 school year. Dr. Jones has only this year become superintendent, and already he has shown great competence and efficiency. A superintendent has to be able to make many important decisions, and Dr. Jones has become respected and admired by all for his abilities. The Nugget Staff would like to wish Dr. Jones the best of luckin years to 6 MR. LUCAS, Principal, has gained the respect and confidence of both student and faculty. MR. ROSSAS, Assistant to the Principal, also teaches geometry and physics. He is recognized by all students as a friend and guidance counselor. MRS. NELSON, Girl's Counselor and Family Living, helps girls with program changes and vocational plans. MR. JOHNSON, Vice - Principal and Varsity Football Coach, is well known for his ability to handle the problems of students. MR. SCOTT, Boy's Counselor, and world history teacher is remembered for his friendly smile and warm personality. MRS. KUNKEL, Girl's Counselor and Family Living, helps girls solve their various problems. . . .The Golden Memories of the four years of high school shall always remain with each graduating class, and especially the Class of 1966. As the last class to occupy the main building, we will carry with us the memory of those days gone by: the open-air patio, the long passageways filled with hurried students, the library with its creaking floors, and the cafeteria, the meeting place of friends. This old, loved building will probably have been torn down by the time of the publication of this yearbook. We will always remember the atmosphere it once contained within its majestic walls, and the old-fashioned quality it once had. This building means something to each of us, and perhaps brings the fond memory of something sad or good. It is with love and respect that we dedicate this yearbook to the memories of the past years: to two people whom we shall never forget, Bill Winston and Erin Schram, and to the lingering thoughts of our first years at Oroville High School. The Class of 1966 solemnly dedicates the Nugget to the Golden Memories of our four years at Oroville High School. 8 Mrs. Powers, attendance clerk, is known for her warm personality. She maintains records of all students, and also a detention file for the vice-principal. Mr. Houston, book store manager, is always ready with a friendly smile. He is in charge of storing and issuing textbooks and supplies. Mrs. Dunlap, head librarian, has to keep Mrs. Southwick, bookkeeper, has the the library quiet for students who wish to important job of keeping track of the study. She also orders all new books. expenditures of student body funds. Mrs. Andrews, secretary to the principal; Mrs . Kauffman, registrar; and Mrs. Maydak, counseling secretary; may all be contributed with the smoothness with which they keep the office running. 10 Custodians: (Top row) Walter Morris, Robert Simpson, Cecil Youngblood, Loyd Keple, Joseph Servie. F. members. Calvin Sanborn was chosen as alternate. Don Blake Alternate: Calvin Sanborn Girls’ and Boys’ State The Junior class boy chosen this year as Boys' State was Calvin Sanborn. He was chosen for his outstanding grades and his interest in student government activities. He will attend Boys' State in Sacramento and will represent Oroville at the meeting. Girls' and Boys' State is the annual convention sponsored by the American Legion. Its main purpose is to promote student interest in city, county, and state government. It accomplishes this by setting up a mock government. The chosen girl and boy learn much about the workings of our government and most important, how they can help our country in the future. Phyllis McCormick was selected as the outstanding Junior girl. Unfortunately, because of lack of funds American Legion could not support a Girls' State, therefore, Phyllis was unable to go. We are sure Phyllis would have made a good representative because of her all-around achievements. Assemblies University of Nevada Band. University of Nevada Band. The time when one could see only a small portion of this tremendous vivacity was at one of the rallies. At each rally there was competition and each class did its best to win the victory bucket. However, the rallies were more than noise and excitement------they were the true picture of the students' ardent devotion to Ol' Oroville. This year, however, due to the small number of players, there was only one rambler team, instead of the A and B rambler teams as in past years. 170 The Season VARSITY JUNIOR VARSITY OROVILLE 48...........Reno 42 OROVILLE 40...........Reno 55 OROVILLE 52..........Chico 54 OROVILLE 61..........Chico 79 OROVILLE 72...Red Bluff 61 OROVILLE 64.......Woodland 61 OROVILLE 42.......Miraloma 53 OROVILLE 64.....Oakmont54 OROVILLE 37.....Yuba City 51 OROVILLE 66.. .Nevada Union 70 OROVILLE 57.Marysville 50 OROVILLE 51.....Roseville 74 OROVILLE 74.........Orland 84 OROVILLE 52.Las Plumas 51 OROVTLLE 65.........Placer 72 OROVILLE 54......Oakmont58 ♦OROVILLE 46___Nevada Union60 ♦OROVILLE 39......Yuba City 73} ’♦OROVILLE 58.Marysville 65 This year, the Oroville High ning of the season. The first major problem was a lack of height. With the addition of 6'4 Jim Thompson, and 6'3 Eurtis Jones, this problem seemed to be solved. Then, about half way through the season, due to many various factors, the team was reduced to only eight players. The squad was increased to ten with the addition of two men from the Rambler Team. Even though the team was now about average size, it was below average in experience, as six of the ten players were juniors. Their league standing wasn't helped by the fact that ten of the games were played against teams rated in the top ten in Northern California. Taking all of this into consideration, the team did a commendable job, against very tough competition. Ma m This year the junior varsity basketball team was coached by Mr. Andoe. This was Mr. Andoe's first year of coaching at Oroville High. The Li'l Tigers started out the year really great. Then sickness attacked the team, and players were missing from many games. Many of these boys who were missing were first or second string, but the remaining players never gave up, and gave eacn game uieir all. The season record for the junior varsity team was 9 wins and 9 losses, with three games to go. Mounkes Varsity Baseball Once again this year, the varsity baseball team of Oroville High School, was the champion team in the Sierra Foothill League. They earned this honor again, by playing their usual fine, championship brand of baseball. However, this year they did have to share their title with one other team in the league. This was Mr. Andoefs first year as varsity baseball coach at Oroville High, and he and the boys on the team did an exceptionally fine job. Not only did they win the championship for our school, but they also made a large contribution towards boosting school spirit. Congratulations to the team and to Coach Andoe. Junior Varsity Baseball Mr. Arnold Oroville High's junior varsity basketball team did not finish too high in league standings. Even if they didn't finish very high, they were a hard playing team. This year, under the guidance of Coach Arnold, these both gained experience that will be extremely valuable to them on the varsity baseball team. Other strong points of the team were the hurdles and the distance events. Varsity Track Row one: R.Howell, M.Pappas, L.Anderson, woMoore, R.Otis, R.Grimm.
