Philharmonic Hall, first unit of New York's projected Lincoln Center for Performing Arts, opened in a blaze of light. Steeple at Oregon State College of Education , Monmouth, Oregon, fell before hurricane-force winds which raked the West Coast in October causing major damage and communication breakdown. U.S. and French officials gathered to welcome crated Mona Lisa as the priceless painting arrived in New York en route to a showing in Washington, D.C.'s National Gallery. National Events in Review WIDE WORLD PHOTOS The Space Needle and Monorail train were hallmarks of the successful World’s Fair in Seattle, Washington. Sabin oral vaccine was mode available nationally and offered promise of complete immunity from all types of polio. Left: Solid-fueled Minuteman, successor to more complex liquid-fueled ICBM'S, begins 4,000 mile journey from Canaveral. Others went into readiness in Montana. Nuclear submarines USS Skate and USS Seadragon rendezvoused at the North Pole, hundreds of miles from open sea. This year’s hard-working Nugget Staff was, left to right, Linda Gross, text; Penny Alexandris, editor; Carolyne Moseley, layouts; Margot Kantola, sports; and Jan Adams, photography. We’ve tried our best to give you a Nugget which we hope you’ll like. As you can see from our pictures, we spent every minute of our time working. Although our school is smaller this year, the Nugget remains the same size — 168 pages in all, and if you’ll notice, the pages are a larger size this year. We hope you’ll have a pleasant time as you scrutinize the following pages. 3 CONTENTS Seniors ... Activities... Faculty... Classes ... Sports ... Ads... DEDICATION... It often happens in the course of one’s life that someone comes along and in a quiet unobtrusive manner becomes a steadying influence upon the persons with whom he is associated. Such a man is Mr. Walburn. He became an employee of Oroville High School in May 1946. A little time later he was put in charge of the custodial staff. When Las Plumas High was built he was given the additional responsibility of its care. To say that Mr. Walburn has been an employee of the District is not enough. He has been far more than that — a friend, a counselor, a willing aid to student, teacher and administrator alike. It was not just a job he performed — it was a service he rendered and he took pride in doing all things well. Time was of no consequence. If it helped someone solve a problem, he was there to do his part quietly, cheerfully and efficiently. His warm personality made it a pleasure to work with him. Some one has said that you never miss the drum in a band until it is not there. When Mr. Walburn leaves, something will be missing, something hard to define in words but clear as a fine toned bell in the hearts of his associates. God Speed and Happy Landings to Mr Walburn and his good wife. J. C. N. 5 ! Board of Trustees... k Mrs. Franklin Murphy, Robert Hoberg, Dr. Robert Bethel, Robert O’Brien, and Jack Miner comprise the 1962-63 Board of Trustees. These five people have the responsibility of the operation of our school. Among their duties are the employment and discharge of personnel, the adoption of extbooks, development of school curriculum, the entering into of contracts, and the building of schools. Three members are serving their second year on the board: Mrs. Murphy, a housewife; Mr. Iloberg, manager at Midvalley Savings and Loan Company; and Mr. O’Brien, owner and operator of O’Brien Realty. Local optometrist, Dr. Bethel, is in his eleventh year of service. Mr. Miner, is the newest addition to the board and is a local farmer. It is evident that the Board devotes much time and energy to its job. Superintendent MR. DAMBACHER Principal Somewhere I’ve read the phrase, “The Challenge of the 60’s.” Living and working successfully in the 1960’s is probably as great a challenge to you young people as was faced by any of your ancestors in their own day. As it was to your ancestors then, the challenge to us today is to be as well prepared as we can be to face life and make a success of it. Success in our day depends largely on our educational preparation. Therefore, make sure that you take advantage of your educational opportunities so that you can successfully meet the challenge of the 60’s. MR. GROSSE Vice-Principal Mr. Grosse came to Oroville High in 1949 as a teacher. He later attained the position of Vice-Principal and was christened “Smiley.” In 1961 he was awarded the “O.H.S. Purple Heart Award” for injuries suffered while attempting to protect the property rights of neighbors during the students’ lunch hour. In his years at Oroville High two dreams have come true: a student parking lot and a “buffer zone” surrounding the high school campus to eliminate loitering and littering. BOYS’ COUNSELOR — Mr. Hugh Harrison is always ready to help the boys with their personal as well as academic problems. ATTENDANCE OFFICER—Mr. Kauffman acts as Senior boys counselor as well as attendance officer. There has been a noticeable decrease in absenteeism due to visits he makes to homes of absent students. OFFICE GIRLS’ COUNSELOR — Mrs. Edith Kunkel, head counselor, assists the girls with their vocational plans as well as high school programming. HEAD LIBRARIAN — Mrs. Dunlap orders all new books for both the Oroville and Las Plumas libraries and sets up a library course of study for the English department. STAFF... COUNSELING SECRETARY — Mrs. Maddack assits the counselors and sends out cinch notices to students. BOOK STORE MANAGER — Always ready with a friendly smile is Bill Huston, who is in charge of storing and issuing textbooks and supplies. ATTENDANCE C.LERK — Mrs Powers maintains records for all students. She also keeps a detention file for the vice-principal and books on the Feather River Project for both schools. MAIN OFFICE STAFF — Mrs. Andrews, secretary to the principal and vice-principal, does mimeograph work for the teachers, types the daily Tiger Bulletin and the football programs. Mrs. Kauffman, registrar, keeps accurate records of all OHS students, sends and receives transcripts, and operates the switchboard. 9 imlis and Custodians . •. The 1962 football season closed with the varsity team posting a 4-4-1 record and finishing third in the league behind Yuba City and Marysville. “The boys proved themselves to be a real fine football team and with a few breaks I feel they could have won the league championship,” said Mr. Johnson, head football coach. Bob Wells, tackle, was voted most valuable player as well as co-captain by his teammates. He was selected to the all Superior California team by the Sacramento Bee and the all Sierra Foothill League team by the league coaches. Dan Nelson, team leader and offensive quarterback, was elected all-league by the Bee. Observations by the coaching staff include the following: Ken Milligan, end, top receiver; Ron Alt, exceptional defensive halfback; Dan Galbraith, fullback, and Tom Draeger, junior tackle, good defensive ball players throughout the season; Robert Corkkin, end, fine target; Adalbert Bartel, co-captain, one of the best defensive ends in the league; Jim Prouty, fine all around football player hampered by injuries; Fred Bluford, driving fullback, excellent ground gainer; Walter Humphreys, tough defensive guard; Les-ton Peck, center, opened many holes during crucial plays for the backfield; Glen Dowdy, excellent all around player at both center and guard. Mr. Johnson and Mr. Martin, assistant coach, are looking forward to an excellent season next year with the many fine returning juniors. Among these are John Whittier, halfback, the most consistent back this season, and Larry Heath, tackle, the best junior football player in the league according to Johnson. T. Draegcr, R. Owens, J. A • • • Varsity Cheerleaders JUDY WHITLOCK YVONNE EVANS (Head) ON DISPLAY — The Victory Bell arrived at the football field after a procession through the downtown streets of Oroville. Both school participated in the parade. • • • Early in the 1961 Basketball season the Las Plumas and Oroville Student Councils met to discuss a symbol of rivalry between the two schools. A victory bell was chosen, to be awarded each year to the winner of the varsity football game. The bell intended to channel the enthusiasm of the students toward an acceptable goal as a symbol of good competition, was obtained from an old house in Feather Falls. The dedication of the Bell was made by Superintendent Weston M. Alt, who said: “Let us all, principals, students, parents and friends dedicate this Bell to our two high schools, Las Plumas and Oroville; to clean, hard, fair play; to keep competition; to friendly rivalry; to sportsmanship and high ideals; and to victory. May each school each year exemplify the best in scholastic competition, contribute to an ever increasing appreciation of these principles, and may they take victory — or defeat as fate will impartially ascribe to them over the years — in stride.” THE SYMBOL OF VICTORY — The bell is 22 inches in diameter and including the solid oak base, weighs 200 pounds. It is cast iron with a bronze finish. The cost of repairs to the bell, about $60 was split between the two schools. Oroville-Las Plumas game by a score of 12-0. Here the 115 happy players are shown carrying the bell (partially hidden) off the field. J.V. FOOTBALL... Forming the mainstay of the team were the only two returning players from last year’s varsity, Ken Milligan, forward, and Lawrence Jones, center. Jones, the captain, was the leader in rebounds and scoring, averaging 10.5 points per game. Dan Wilson was hampered by a knee injury in early season but played effectively in later games, displaying fine outside shooting in the Acker Tournament. Wayford Berry was constantly good as both a scorer and a rebounder. Larry Heath, although lacking some of the experience of the other players, scored well in later games at critical moments. Lonnie Morris was a big help in many games with his accurate shooting. John Quintel was the most consistent guard, showing promise for high-scoring honors next year. Reserves who played an important part in the. winning season were Jim Prouty, Dan Nelson, Bruce McDaniels, Dave Jones, seniors, and John Nelson, a junior. Curtis Byford (manager) Coach Millet The 1962 Varsity Basketball players and Coach Millet chose to dedicate their winning season to Jim Hastie who, because of illness, was unable to play this year. Two of the games lost were in overtime, three by a two-point margin and two by one point. In view of this situation, Mr. Stafford, coach, commented, “The boys seemed to be about two points from greatness in every game.” Ron Schoeder, center, was the leading scorer, and Stan Anderson, guard, the best all-around player.
