JOLENE SITTON Co- Editor SUE GINTER Co- Editor GARY SCHRAMM Prior to his residence in California, Mr. Oscar Fylling served as a superintendent of public schools in North Dakota, having previously graduated from the university of the same state. Amazingly, in the 24 years Mr. Fylling has served in the department of social sciences in Oroville High School, he has missed only 2 days of school. Besides his regular duties, he has spent much time coaching students for speech contests. Two of his students reached the state level. THE BIG FIVE — The Board of Trustees for the ‘61-'62 school year was composed of Mrs. Franklin Murphy, Robert O’Brien, Robert Hoberg, D. Robert Bethel and Ernest Gibson. The responsibilities of the Board of Trustees are given by law and include the development of the school cirriculum, adoption of textbooks, employment and discharge of personnel, regulations governing the operation of the school, the purchase of real property, and the building of schools. Three members are in their first year of service: Mrs. Murphy, a housewife; Mr. Hoberg, manager at Midvalley Savings and Loan Company; and Robert O’Brien, owner and operator of O’Brien’s Realty. Dr. Bethel, a local optometrist, has served ten years. This is the longest term of service among the current members. Ernest Gibson is in his fifth year of service. He owns and operates Gibson’s Pharmacy. The appreciation of the entire student body and staff is extended to the Board of Trustees for the numerous hours they donate to the betterment of OHS, strictly as a public service. D. Dambacher, Principal Office ATTENDANCE OFFICER—Mr. Lucas, snper snooper, is hot on the trail of a truant student. He is about to check the validity of an absence excuse. ATTENDANCE OFFICE SECRETARY-Mrs. Powers, a cheery soul, keeps track of all those students who cut school. PENCIL PUSHER-Besides her regular duties as school secretary, Mrs. Andrews is kept busy with the switchboard. REGISTRAR - Mrs. Kauffman keeps records of every student in OHS, and is responsible for forwarding transfer records. OUR BUSY LIBRARIAN— Mrs. Dunlap is responsible for ordering all new books, and is kept constantly active shuffling between Las Plumas and OHS. BOOK STORE MANAGER —A joke and a smile characterize this happy fellow. Big” Bill Huston issues students such necessities as paper, pencils, and books. JUNIOR AND SOPHOMORE BOYS’ COUNSELOR—Mr. Harrison is the counselor for both the junior and sophomore boys. This year, he is also Director of Student Activities. SENIOR GIRLS’ COUNSELOR—“YVhat classes shall I take this year?” Can I get a scholarship?” “Where can I get a job?” These are all familiar questions to Mrs. Kunkel. COUNSELING SECRETARY - Mrs. Maddack sends hundreds of letters to OHS students each year — cinch notices! COOKS AND CUSTODIANS-(above) Mrs. Nelson, Mrs. Goble, Mrs. Nelson, Mrs. Elliff. HOLD THAT TIGER-Pat Dudley, girls’ representative, is amply escorted by Vernon Bissell, boys’ representative, and Bill Peck, vice president, who is liable to get a hot foot, if he isn’t careful. THE LINE UP—And a pretty one too, with Keith McGeehee, president; Sue Ginter, vice president; Charmaine Crowder, secretary; Karen Paulsen, girls’ representative; and Doug Sears, boys’ representative. TROPHY WINNERS — Robert Van Dyck, math and science; Dave Chollet, fine arts; Steve Leonard, liberal arts; Barbara Hill, vocational arts. CERTIFICATE WINNERS—Barbara Hill, business; Alicia Diaz, home economics; Jack Singer, agriculture; Gus Martin, industrial arts; Dave Chollet, music; Steve Leonard, English; Vernon Bissell, social science; Gary Heath, laboratory science; Pat Pryor, foreign language; Ruth Lowman, art; Robert Van Dyck, math. TWISTING TOWARD SUCCESSl-Booked lor the Peppermint Lounge” are Steve “Legs” Leonard; Pat Fiedler: Richard Budler; Dave Chollet; Bev Chamberlain, (the camera hog in the efront row) ; Mike O'Neal; Charmaine “Queen of the Twist” Crowder, who is showing some new motions to Vernon Bissell; Gary Heath, (over Vernon's leti shoulder), who twisted himself right out of the picture; Robert Stone Face” Van Dyck; Kevin Non-Conformist” Murphy; “Smiling” Sherrill Ford, Bob “The Killer” Watson; Wanda Stiles and Lorelei Sherwood. Six of these twisters are depending on the final grades of the year to give them life membership. Let’s hope they make it! Students who receive 10 grade-points from semester grades are eligible for membership in the California Scholastic Federation. Those who obtain membership four out of their last six semesters receive life membership in the Federation and a gold seal on their diplomas. An A” in a solid (English, social science, math, etc.) earns three points while B’s” in a solid earn one point. An “A” in some non-solid (band, typing, etc.) earns one and a half points, and a B”, one half point. This makes it necessary to earn at least three “A’s” in solid subjects each semester in order to make this select group. DOES GROSSE HAVE A HEART? — These Life CSF’ers, (left to right), Kevin Murphy, Fat Fiedler, Robert Van Dyck, Sherrill Ford, Wanda Stiles, Bob Watson, and Mike O'Neal (the doctor), are participating in an initiation stunt during a CSF GARY HEATH Members of the Brain Brawl team were selected by the faculty through a point system. The students with the highest number of points then represented OH'S at the Brain Brawl in Yuba City. Results were not known at press time. KEVIN MURPHY VERNON BISSELL STEVE LEONARD KE EAL Graduation speakers were chosen by the administration from noninations by the seniors. The speakers for ‘62 were Steve Leonard, fall student body president; Mike O’Neal, spring student body president and first place winner in the Lions’ Club contest; Judy Dallas, head cheerleader; and Virginia Toney, first place winner in the CSF and the Native Sons’ contests. The majortiy of the seniors know who their best are and chose wisely,” commented Mr. Dambacher, OHS principal. The speeches are written by the chosen students under the supervision of Mr. Fylling, social science instructor, on a topical theme of interest to the students. They are usually about five minutes in length. Kevin Murphy was chosen to give the invocation. Although the Tigers often outplayed their opponents, they tended to be off-guard at crucial times, and lost three games because of last minute scoring. Because of numerous injuries, johnny Johnson, head coach, and back-coach Wes Martin, who was new to the Varsity this year, had quite a time juggling the players around to find a winning combination. The 1961 SFL all-star from Oroville was John Corbaley, senior tackle. Honorable mention went to Jack Greer, halfback; Ken Wiederspan, tackle: Rod Koski, end: and Larry Conner, guard. All were seniors. The team voted John Corbaley and Buckv Whittier co-captains for their leadership and athletic ability. Could it be that he's preparing to shoot it out with someone! “This is one of the finest sports I have ever coached,” said cross country mentor Elba Stafford. “The boys would run until exhaustion.” “The A team finished second in the SFL and with a few breaks, could have won it,” Stafford went on. Letter winners in the A division were Kevin Murphy, Jack Singer, Jim Hinsley, Terry Bostick, Mike O’Neal, and Jack Tiehm. OHS had the best B cross country team in the section. They won the SFL and the San Joaquin Section and lost only one meet all year. Chris Johnson was the best runner in the section. He broke four course records and won every race in which he ran. Those receiving letters on the B team were Johnson, Harold Abbott, Jerry Spivy, Wayford Berry, Normand Lussier. Jim Patrick, Bill Mever, Wes Dean, Bill Payne, and John Herrington. Jones, the leading scorer, was elected to the All Acker Tournament Team and was voted by players, coaches, and sportswriters, the most valuable player award in the SFL. Doug Sears was voted to the SFL team also. Bill Peck led the Tigers at the free throw line and was a valuable floor man along with Evans, the floor leader.
