Text from Pages 1 - 176 of the 1961 volume:

DO IT YOURSELF NUGGET—Hardly able to control themselves, the staff prepares to create their version of a contemporary style-yearbook. They include (L to R) Sara Kauffman, text editor; Jolene Sitton, assistant text editor; Sue Ginter, assistant art editor; Diane Openshaw, business manager; Connie Leonard, editor; and Jaclelle Andrews, art editor. In the upper left corner is Wild Bill Stevens, assistant photographer. Not pictured, Mr. Prouty, advisor. We, the members of the 1901 Nugget Staff, take the liberty of dedicating this yearbook to one, Mr. James Warren Prouty, who we believe truly deserves the honor. For eight years he has taken on the burdening responsibilities of being the advisor for Orovillc High’s Nuggets. We believe him to be more than a patient instructor, but also a man, who through his authoritative manners and thoughtfulness for others, demands the respect of his students, and seeks to make them think for themselves. These arc only a few reasons why wc are dedicating this book to you, Mr. I HK HOARD Ok 1RUS1EES—(L to R) Ernest Gibson, Dr. Robert Bethel, Ray Leonard and Jack Andrews. The individualist is Mr. Jack Pank. The Board of Trustees has the vested responsibility for the operation of your school. Among the duties specifically charged to it by law are development of the school curriculum, adoption of textbooks, employment and discharge of personnel, regulations governing the operation of the school, including discipline, promotion and conduct; the entering into of contracts, the purchase of real property, and the building of schools. The importance of the work of the Board of Trustees is evident. Its success can only be measured in growth and development of the students within the school, the place that they take in adult life, and the contribution which they in turn make to the welfare of all people. It is, therefore, not a job to be entered into lightly, but one that calls for a great deal of time, effort, and devotion to a cause. Orovillc is fortunate to have five men, each an individual thinker in his own right, who can and do join in welding together for a strong organization. The students, alumni, non-certificated staff, faculty and administration join in this expression of appreciation to the Board of Trustees. svpEiO jkmxT W ho Is riu'y? Not a very grammatical beginning for a school administrator s last remarks to a graduating class, is it? But, read it again. Who is They? 1 his was the year when the world conflict of ideologies of communism vs. democracy was brought sharplx into loms. This was the year when four dreams of men became of realistic concern: peace, decent standards ol living, self-government, and doing awa with second class citizens. 1 his was the year that recognition was given to the need for intelligently trained legislators: for an educated, enlightened public, for the best informed citizens. But where was leadership to come from, who was to define the national purpose, who was to summon us from moral lassitude? Every criticism was in terms f collective society—in terms of “They”. And yet who is They but the individual? We each and severally are the basis of our com-Imunity. II we are Christians in action, take an active interest in church, school, and community affairs, are active in government and vote intelligently, then we indeed contribute to a better world, to the attainment I of dreams. And this is done in steady, unspectacular, day-to-day living by each of us. And who is They? Why, “They” is You! May you live a full life. jjuju o yn- d££- One of our fond hopes as we look ahead is that we will be a success in whatever we may do. Those of you who have experienced success in your school studies and other activities know that among the important ingredients for success are hard work and the willingness to sec the job through to the finish. But even more important is the ability to get along with others. If this be true, then I would predict that a very high percentage of our Oroville High students will meet with success. I believe this because of the way the student body has demonstrated this ability to get along with each other under some rather trying circumstances this past year. Our over-crowded conditions at the beginning of the school year followed by the inconveniences of the shuttle-busses could have caused us great problems if we had not had the willingness to cooperate. My wish is that you will continue to develop this ability so that you can be assured of your rightful share of success. I ney arc entered as Life Members of the Society. If they enter the University of California they automatically become members of the Lower Division Honor Society and remain so long as their grades are good. Students gain this scholastic level required by the Honor Society through a ten point system. n A” in a solid (English, social science, math, etc.) earns three points. B’s” in a solid earn one point. An A” in some non solids (band, typing, etc.), earns 1 points, with a B giving i 2 poim. This makes it necessary to cam at least three “As' in solid subjects each semester order to make this select group. This band performs intricate half-time maneuvers at all home football games, takes part in school and civic parades and marches in The Northern Sacramento Valley Music Festival. It's members are chosen from the various bands on campus. The Pep Bands for the basketball games are chosen from the Marching Band. At the beginning of 1961, the Marching Band was equipped with new uniforms at the cost of over $5000. This money was raised over a three year period by the members of The Music Department through magazine drives and candy sales. Majorettes are Marge Gould, Betty Jo Neal, Jolcne Silton (head), Judy Dallas, and Sandy Dallas. The Fall Semester Student Council was headed by Jim Shaw, President of the Student Body. Every week Jim gave reports on its progress to the Rotary Club. Sara Kauffman, vice president, displayed her outstanding ability to organize the talent of OHS through two successful assemblies. The secretary-treasurer was Connie Leonard, who kept an accurate account of the Student Council meetings, signed student body checks, and reported high school events to the Soroptimist Club. The historian, Charlotte Post, was responsible for keeping the scrapbook adding those newspaper clippings which concerned OHS. Brawny Paul Miller, Block O” custodian, made sure the “Big O” remained white. During the fall semester the Student Council instigated the successful decorating of the school for Christmas. There was tremendous co-operation of both students and faculty in promoting the spirit of the season. A jute-box, operated this fall in the girls’ gym, made a few noon dances possible. Most of the members of Student Council attended the Student Leaders Conference in Chico. The Constitution was reviewed and it was decided to revise it in the spring in order that more democratic representation might be effected. Sara Kauffman Connie Leonard Charlotte Post Paul Miller IuJemTbodY Jim Shaw, Gerald Bay, Jadelle Andrews, and Sara Kauffman met with other representatives of the Sierra Foothill League at a conference held at Yuba City High School. Plans were made for a Sierra Foothill League dance. These officers played a major role in planning the activities of the seventeenth annual Acker Touranment held in Oroville March 2, 3, 4. Reporting to Rotary every week was only one of many duties of President Gerald Bay. Jadelle Andrews did an outstanding job as Vice President, carrying out the difficult task of rounding up talent from the four host schools for the Acker Assembly. Sharron Greene reported the activities of the school to the Soroptimist Club and kept the minutes of the student council. As Historian Betty Sue Points made sure the scrapboj date. Coach A1 Walsh, assisted by Mel Anglin, both ex-Oroville High football players, admitted, We had the nucleus of a good ball club, but several injuries hurt us. Walsh decided that his outstanding gridders were Don Dunn, guard and halfback; Lonnie Wells, halfback; Mike Dunn, defensive linebacker; and Roy Owens, halfback. The freshman Coach believes that his boys will make a good junior varsity group next year. REMEMBER WHEN?-Two ex-gridders of OHS, Mr. Walsh, and Mr. Anglen, survey the freshman football team. Neil Loyd, manager The OHS Varsity finished much improved over the season to tie for third place in the Sierra Foothill League. Several of the losses were by very close scores —two in the last-second were one-point defeats. Guards Harvey Dopp and Jack Burbridge were elected team co-captains. Dopp led the scoring with 170 points, and Burbridge, who was third in scoring, was acclaimed by Coach Duard Millet the best all-around player. Forward Steve Leonard led in rebounds closely followed by center, Bill Jones, who was also second-leading scorer. Forward Doug Sears was third in rebounding and fourth in scoring. “The team played well together; they showed lots of determination all the way through the season,” declared Millet. ART ACKER, tournament founder, receives a gift of appreciation from tiie OHS student body presented by Mr. Weston Alt, superintendent of schools. The Tournament became a reality in 1944 when principals from seven Sacramento Valley schools met to plan a tourney that could be more than just an athletic event. The officials heard that Art Acker, head of the P. E. department at Chico State College, had conducted a revolutionary type of basketball tournament among seven state colleges in 1939 and they turned to him for help. He outlined a seven team tournament that would continue for three nights of play and which would keep every team in competition throughout its duration, because of its plus and minus scoring system which does not eliminate teams for losses. Clayton Valley won the 17th Annual Acker Tournament with plus 68, as Oroville’s Tigers, the underdogs, claimed fifth with minus 41. The OHS gym was the scene of the three day, seven games a night activity on March 2, 3, 4. Harvey Dopp lead the Tigers with 70 per cent accuracy in free-throws and a total tournament score of 51 points. ‘ Steve Leonard put his six feet, four inches into actioq to haul down a total of 81 rebounds, a tournament high. Jack Burbridge was credited with tyt assists. Others who saw lots of action inclucjft Bill Jones, | bu£ Sears, and Dick Hoffman. By winning the championship the C team retired the league trophy to the OHS trophy case. “This championship was a great team effort with our defense being the primary reason we won,’ said Coach Millet. Co-captains of the team were Billy Vasoliou and Vernon Bissell. Wayford Berry, Lyle Ball, Luther Tobias, Wayne Williams, Dale Sowards, Vasoliou, and Bissell were the Seven C Team lettermen. I he D team finished in second place in the SFL with an overall record of nine wins and four losses. “This was an inexperienced team, but they came on strong at the end of the season,” said Mr. Millet. “Duke” Loyd was chosen captain of the D team by ten lettermen. Chuck Luzovich, not at top form yet, ran a 2:03 half mile as a B. Only a junior, John Corbaley looked impressive in the shot with a best put of 52'4i 2 . Ben Woodson a sophomore, ran the 100 yard dash in 10.4. In the pole vault Ken Meyer, a junior, had topped 11' 6 . B division—Chris Johnson, Bill Peck, and Kevin Murphy guaranteed this team considerable strength in the distances. A hard worker, Harold Abbott, was the only sprinter of promise. C.division-Willie Clark seemed sure to be the high point producer, as he took three firsts in a duel met with uba City-100 and 330 yard dashes, and the broad jump. Others best in their events included the following: Larry Wayland, pole vault and shotput; Jimmy Patrick. 1320; and Wayne Williams, hurdles. The B team is doing a terrific job for so early in the season. 1 hate hope for the C team.” These comments were made by coach Mclnturf at the beginning of this Cross-Country season. In the A division Richard Adams ended up as the team’s regular first man, followed by his teammates in this general order: Wayne Bissell, Chuck Luzovich, and Emil Myers. This fast combination won three first place victories. Kevin Murphy, Chris Johnson, Gene White, Harold Abbot, and Steve Pscherer totaled six victories, including the League meet, when the team was handicapped because of the loss of their lead man, Kevin. The B's helped a great deal to push Oroville toward its over all win at the League meet by taking their division easily.
