Text from Pages 1 - 156 of the 1956 volume:

DEDICATION The Graduating Class of 1956 is proud to dedicate this year's Nugget to our Principal and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Nisbet. We wish in this way to express our thanks for the friendship and help given us during our years in High School. It is with utmost pleasure and humbleness that we dedicate this book to you. J. C. NISBET PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE We have often heard the injunction . . . “For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and loses his own soul.” I would suggest that each Senior think seriously about this injunction because within it are the germs of great truth. All of us seek distinction in our own way. All of us want enough of this world’s goods to be secure in our economic situation and to care for those dependent upon us. These are laudable ambitions and no man is worth his salt who does not strive for success in all his undertakings. What I want to say to you is that in all your striving never forget that there are fundamental truths that have come down to us from the beginnings of the world. If history teaches us anything it teaches us that in every situation where men forgot the simple virtues of honesty, truth, fair play and humility their house of cards fell about their ears. Today we are reaping the harvest in international affairs of such forgetful men. It is no less true in the lives' of individuals, he who forgets the common laws of decency is on his way to oblivion. Above any material success that I could wish you, I hope above all else that your contemporaries will be able to say . . . “It was good to know him.” If they say that then we know the world is a little better for your having been in it. Otherwise there is no justification for your existence. FOREWORD The Nugget Staff presents to you the record of the 1955-56 school year. We hope you will treasure this book and when you look at it, fond memories will return. To the Seniors we extend our best wishes. We sincerely hope this Nugget gives a true picture of their last year at Oroville Union High School. We hope you enjoy the Nugget as much as we enjoyed publishing it. Tigers finished the season with a record of eight wins and no losses. The team stacked up its third consecutive S.F.L. crown and stretched its current winning streak to twenty-seven straight. The Tigers placed four players, Lyle Gross, Dick Hofius, Win McCracken, and Bert Myers, on the All-Star Sierra Foothill League Team. The team was further honored in the San Francisco Examiner by being rated the number one team from Fresno to the Oregon border. Sixteen of these boys will be graduating without ever having been defeated in high school competition, because of two undefeated seasons on the “B” team. What a team to root for!!! Coach In our rally prior to the second Placer basketball game this past season, Mr. Nisbet, in a plea for good sportsmanship in the event that we lost, made the statement that a “whole generation of Oroville High School students have not learned what it is to lose.” Good or bad that seems to be the situation. In a seven team league the law of averages would indicate a championship every seven years. If we are to get back on schedule OUHS will have to forego winning until our kids are out of high school. For example, our varsity football team has not lost a game since we entered the Sierra Foothill League three seasons ago. Our last eleven were further honored by being selected the outstanding high school football team in California from Fresno to the Oregon border, a fair chunk of real estate. Now that’s a lot of success for us small town folk to digest, but it hardly reached our Adam’s apple before we had this basketball team on our hands, the best in the school’s history. Our boys rolled through twenty-three regular season games without tripping while averaging 68 points per game to our opponents’ 38, then went on to rip through the Acker Tournament for six more wins. Even though we placed one man, Bert Myers, on the San Francisco Examiner All Northern California Team and two others, Sonny Brandt and Cossie Steele, on the same paper’s All North State Team, it was balance, not individual stars, that was the big factor in this phenomenal record. For example, over the regular season Bert Myers averaged 12.4 points per game, Ron Milligan 11.2, Cossie Steele 10.3, Roy Mastelotto 9.7 and Sonny Brandt 8.4. Con Belcher with far less opportunity came up with a 5.4 average. So we had rebounding power, defensive skill, and scoring finesse (even when flat on our backs) in proportions that added up to balance. And knowing all this, and nothing more, you still wouldn’t know “our” team. There were times during that long string of victories when, in the closing throat clutching seconds of a contest, defeat hung in the thick gym air, hushing our rooters, maddening theirs. Such a game was the first Placer clash when, with only one and a half minutes still registered on the official clock the Tigers trailed by four points. It was an easy time to fold, almost a natural one, perhaps. But as has happened so often in the several sports over the past few seasons the wounded tiger clawed back, and once again the OUHS student body was denied the opportunity of learning how to lose. Yes, most of us will long remember how, as the final buzzer sounded, Ron Milligan swished the winning field goal. So we come to somebody’s old cliche, “A team that won’t be beat, can’t be.”; and the word for our team . . . HEART.
