Text from Pages 1 - 168 of the 1955 volume:

'Dedication We, the Graduating Class of 1955, wish to dedicate this year's Nugget to Mrs. Eula B. Gray for her untiring efforts in behalf of the student body of Oroville Union High School. You are kind, friendly, and tolerant to all. The jobs you have are many, but you are always willing to stop to help students and answer their many questions. This is our small but sincere way to say thank you. Principal’s Message TO SENIORS: When we read the early history of our Country we note the great interest men like Washington and Jefferson had in the promotion of Education. They believed that the very survival of their country depended upon the Education of its citizens. This is not less true today. It is even truer insofar as economic survival is concerned. The uneducated are having a more and more difficult time in obtaining and keeping employment. The day of the Jack of all Trades and Master of none has long since passed. I congratulate you on surviving thus far. But do not let High School graduation end your formal education if it is at all possible to continue. The more schooling you get the more self-independent you become—the more important citizen you can be—the greater service you can render—and finally the greater pleasure and satisfaction will you get out of Life. J. C. NISBET foreword The Nugget Staff has worked many long hard hours in an effort to bring you a record of events of the school year. We hope that the book will bring back many fond memories in the years to come. We would like to express our sincere appreciation to all those who have contributed to the completion of this book. And so we present the 1955 Nugget. EDITOR Graduation Speakers Sitting: Luana Lundquist, Sharon Kast. Back row: Bob Mastelotto, Mary Thomas, Michael Good. Absent: Michael Richards. I, Betty Jo Thomas, being of practically sound mind and very round body, will to my sisters, Leta and Melba, Connie Sue's corny ways of doing things. And to my cousins, Martha Crawford and Laura McElhaney my grades in Homemaking. I, Mary Thomas, having part of my marbles and a cupid heart, hereby will my cousin. Con Belcher, to Norma Barnes. May they be as shy together as he was alone. I, Ken Thompson, will my ability to watch drive-in movies to Jackie Clark. I, Charles Atlas, will and bequeath my muscles to anyone who can use them. I, Kenneth Walker, will my honesty to Mr. Grosse. I, Claude Waddle, do hereby will and bequeath my seat in Mr. Rossas's Physics class to any future Senior who wants it. And to Doug Tokuno, a new radiator for his car. I, Micki Weaver, being of emaciated and grotesque body and having absolutely no mind whatsoever, do hereby will and bequeath to Carl Harrison, class of 1959, my locker, number 490, and its contents in the Girls' Gym! I, Clare Wigg, hereby will my ability to go steady with the same boy for over a year to Sandra Taber. Also I will David Rabe, George Messinger, and Joe Berumen to Jane Duncan. I, Malkum Willcox, will to the rest of the clan to follow the ability to confuse the teachers and others with the spelling of our last name. I, Carol Williams, will to Dianne Seater and Penny Flower my big -??. I, Dolly Winters, will my ability to fill fountain pens to Gail Hofius. I, Polly Winters, will to Jack Stembridge and Gary Black my best behavior on the bus. I, Wayne Wixom, will to Cousins Pat, Lynda, and Lyn any old books they may find useful in their Senior year. I, Rachel Y'Bara, being of body (this much I'm sure of!) will if you will. I, Lucy Zent, do hereby will my ability to go steady with two boys at the same time and not have either know it, to someone who can't keep secrets. This was the second year in a row that the Tigers have captured the Sierra Foothill crown. With a record of 9 wins and no losses the Tigers were rated third in the football standings of Northern California at the end of the season. Sparking the Tiger offense was Tom Brown who was fourth in scoring in Northern California with a total of 138 points. Oroville placed four players on the All Star Sierra Foothill League Team. They were Tom Brown, halfback, Charles Jovich, end. Win McCracken, center, and Ron Hill, guard. The team had a lot of spirit and turned in the best performance in many years.
