OROVILLE UNION HIGH SCHOOL OROVILLE.CALIFORNIA MOVES FORWARD WITH One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth standeth for ever ... All the rivers run unto the sea, yet the sea doth not overflow: unto the place from whence the rivers come they return, to flow again. OLD TESTAMENT Ecclesiastes 1,7 IN MEMORIAM Dewey Hultz 1937-1952 THERE IS NO DEATH There is a plan far greater than the plan you know; There is a landscape broader than the one you see. There is a haven where storm-tossed souls may go— You call it death—we, immortality. You call it death—-this seeming endless sleep; We call it birth—the soul at last set free. 'Tis hampered not by time or space—you weep. Why weep at death ? 'tis immortality. Farewell, dear voyageur—'twill not be long. Your work is done—now may peace rest with thee. Your kindly thoughts and deeds—they will live on. This is not death—'tis immortality. Farewell, dear voyageur—the river winds and turns; The cadence of your song wafts near to me, And now you know the thing that all men learn: There is no death—there’s immortality. Anonymous DEDICATION Dear Mr. Stollar, You thought that you could slide quietly away into that state of quiet bliss known as retirement, and you almost succeeded. We should have expected as much from you, for you were never one to stand in the limelight bowing to the huzzas of the crowd. No, you were something far greater—a teacher, a friend of students, not seeking praise but seeking to impart knowledge patiently, quietly, and thoroughly. Did you think for a moment that we could forget the 26 years which you gave to Oroville High School? Did you honestly believe that we could forget the efficient manner in which you performed the numerous positions assigned to you—positions such as science teacher. Director of Student Activities, Vice Principal and Coordinator of Curriculum? Did you truly think that we could forget you? Well, we haven't. It has taken us a year to think of some tribute to you, some sign of our affection. We haven't much to offer, just the history of a year out of many years, but we hope that you will enjoy it. And so to you, Mr. Stollar, with all of our best wishes we dedicate the 1953 NUGGET. The Student Body There is nothing lower than a Freshman.” How many times have we heard this said? True, we were very timid. Yes, we did think that the end of the world was coming when we saw groups of Seniors headed in our direction. However, the upper-classmen finally succeeded in easing those fears and welcomed us newcomers into their midsts, but only after a thorough initiation. But our day is coming, believe us. The stream which will carry us into the torrents of the senior class is one grade the closer. h, Henders°n- g(anVen- £■ ? GiUis. F« h r°W' Fickcs. left . son. Second f° r, f: C arlf c Third row. We were eager participants in the Freshman-Sophomore brawl, we sponsored the Sophomore Hop, and we even went out on dates occasionally. We were growing quickly and assuming leadership naturally. We were seeking the future, the path of the river with anticipation. Our life was beginning to take its normal course. We still had many of the friends we had made as sophomores, we still had some familiar teachers, and, unfortunately, we still had the same old homework. But, imperceptibly at first, we did begin to have a feeling of awareness—awareness of the feelings of others, awareness of unsettled world conditions, awareness of our responsibility to ourselves and to our country as citizens. The stream of our existence was hitting some rocks, but they were rocks which would purify us and make our force stronger with time.
