GGPWL ga 1 f The graduatmg class of Jun 1949 1S one of the thlee Centenmal Classes Last year we celebrated the 100th ann1versary of the drscover y of gold 1n Callfornla and 1n 1900 we w1ll celebrate the adnnsslon of Cal1f as a State 1n the Un1on Th1s year wc are celebratlng the gold rush on the advent of the so called 49ers rnto Callfornla These three events had a pecul 1ar s1gn1f1cance 1D the hlstory of thc world as well as 1n the h1story of Cal1forn1a because w1th the comlng of the 49ers State Government was demanded and Cal1forn1a became x State 1n the Un1on You w1ll remem ber also of course that th1s was just before the C1v1l War by the North endlng an era of human slavery and rededlcattlng the purposes of the Unlted States Government to um versal freedom It 1S s1gn1f1cant also that the type of people who came to Cahfor n1a 1n those days were the hardy and the adventurous those who were d1SSat1Sf1ed w1th cond1t1ons at home The dlscovery of gold opened a new opporrtunlty for more freedom and Where ones personal mlght could lead to a fuller l1fe You as a class have that her1tage to look back up on Today there 1S another great m1grat1on of 49ers comlng to Cal1f ornla People are stlll looklng for more freedom for vuder opportunlty for a chance to carve out soclal and economlc mdependence A hundred years ago It was found 1n the gold 1n the SOll today It IS found 1n the water ln the power 1n the orchards ln the 1ndustr1al plants 1n the Shlp plng 1n the o1l and all the other thlngs that we know 1n Cahfornla Yours 15 the opportunlty to be a part of th1s great developlng force to do your share IH maklng the State r1cher not only rn materlal thmsf'-, but 1n thlngs of the sp1r1t as well Wlth the fortltude of the 49ers w1th the advantages of modern educatlon w1th moral stamlna 1nher1ted from your ancestors w1th courage 1n your conv1ct1ons and Wlth fa1th ln your 3bll1tlGS you can carve out a Cal1f ornla whlch wlll be as un1oue as the one found by those p1oneers to whom th1s book IS dedlcated I dare you to try' J C NISBET
