During the past four years these high standards have been continued and new goals have been reached in our school life. We, the Senior Class of 1953, dedicate the year book to the man who by his unflagging efforts and conscientious service has contributed much to the success of these goals --Superintendent of the Orono Consolidated Schools, Mr. Carlton W. Lytle. 2 FOREWORD High school life is a thrilling phrase of our lives filled with work, pleasures and ambitions. In future years you will look back on these happy days when they are only a pleasant memory. To provide a means of recalling these pleasureable days the staff has compiled in this 1953 Orion Annual a record of your high school activities. They hope you will enjoy this review of the 1952-53 school year now and in years to come. 3 SUPERINTENDENT PRINCIPAL MR. CARLTON W. LYTLE MR. EMANUEL F. The senior class joined ranks entering our new district 11 high school in the fall of 1951. We came toOrono as juniors from Deephaven, Mound and Wayzata high schools. Be -cause there were no established traditions, we had the task of choosing the Orono crest for the class rings and were the first class to have the privilege of wearing them. We also were hosts for the first Junior-Senior Prom, May 27, 1952, at the Wood-hill Country Club. This year Orono held its first homecoming celebration for which we were the chairmen. In the two years we have been students at Orono high school we have had many decisions to make and possibly we have helped to establish a few traditions for future classes. As seniors and leaders of our school this year we hope the seniors to follow will find as much enjoyment in their school life as we have. 13 14 FIRST HOMECOMING--1952 Orono's first homecoming got under way Tuesday evening, October 21, wi'r a huge bonfire and pepfest. On the following afternoon there was a parade arour.ci: the football field with the queen candidates riding in convertibles and sever i floats sponsored by different school organizations. The game was played immed-S iately after the parade with Norwood winning 19-7. The failure to win the garri did not dampen the spirits of the fans and a large crowd attended the dance Wednesday evening at the school. The identity of the queen was revealed in an impressive coronation ceremon' in which Jim Courtney, football captain crowned La Donna Crawford the first Oronc Homecoming Queen. 16 UNDERCLASSMEN 5 JUNIORS SOPHOMORES FRESHMEN EIGHTH SEVENTH JUNIOR CLASS Row Is D. The freshmen class arrived at Orono in the fall of 1951 with the anticipation of spending five wonderful years in high school. They wandered through the halls looking just a bit more bewildered than the rest of the upper classes because the room numbers were so high on the doors they couldn't read them. That's all changed this year. They have begun to be noticed and make a mark for their class already. As the 1952-53 school year started.. Wayne Anderson was elected president of the group. A pair of freshmer students gained importance by beinj elected King and Queen of Dogpatcl for the Sadie Hawkins dance. As the years come there will be: many more outstanding achievements made by members of this class as soon as they take the big step into senior high. The girls on the annual staff outnumber the boys and they love just to sit and chat. But that isn't the way an annual is published. So the girls settle down, and the work is begun. There is a lot to publishing an annual that people do not know about. Besides taking pictures and writing copy, there is a business end. The books must be ordered in advance so that there is a copy for everyone. Money must be collected, and that is a big job. Advertising must be sold, and there are many other details tc be attended to. Putting out an annual is not easy but it is fun, and invaluable experience is gained by the staff members. That means all of you! Have everything in by then o you won't live to try again. This is the sort of frightening talk Editor Jo Sprague uses to spur her staff onward. It's quite effective as we can tell by the fine issues of the school paper which have been published. You may see a busy reporter or feature writer scurrying around the school at any hour during the day. They're always busy, finding little bits of interesting news for the students. They keep a careful watch for anything that would be of interest and print it for everyone. The reporting and feature staffs of the paper are as important as the editors, and they do their best to produce a good school paper. When the whole town has turned out to welcome Billy, his easy-going, homeless pal, Cornelius Neeley' Crum is mistaken for the hero. Neeley receives the cheers and adulation, until the Haskins family appears to straighten out the error, but not until Pamela Payne, the college reporter has whispered to Virginia, Billy's one time sweetheart, about Neeley's (whom she believes to be Billy) amorous inclinations. Complications pile one on top of the other when a local filling station is held up, Pamela elopes, and poor Billy is suspected in both cases. Neeley turns up with two hundred dollars, the exact amount taken in the hold-up. Pop Haskins and Smitty, and the maid are drawn into the misunderstanding, and Billy concludes that a hero's role is not all that it should be. However, in the end Billy is exonerated and wins the girl of his choice, and the Haskins family once more basks in the reflected glory of THE HERO. 34 MISTER CO-ED Sitting: Z. Armstrong. J. Robb. H. When the president and faculty learn that the fabulously wealthy Mrs. Colgate Brewster wants to enroll her granddaughter, Lotus Smith, at Cedar Hill and will send one hundred thousand dollars as a gift to the college, all are overjoyed. Mrs. Colgate Brewster, having disowned her daughter before Lotus was born, has never seen her grandchild. A wave of consternation sweeps across the campus of Cedar Hill when Lotus Smith, a handsome cowboy from somewhere out West arrives. From that moment forward, Lotus finds herself hopelessly emmeshed in a net of gay deceptions and tossed from one laughter-fraught episode of feminine impersonation to another. All ends well as Cedar Hill gets a new lease on life and Lotus and Emily find each other. 35 SENIOR BABY SHOTS 1-Patsy Ostvig, 2-LaDonna Crawford. 3-Alexander Hill, 4-Hazel Underdahl. 5-Joan Knapp, 6-Marlene Gummert. 7-Marvin Johnson. 8-Janet Dumas. 9-Marcia Halgren. 10-Zonne Armstrong, 11-Lorraine Hein-zen. 12-June Johnson. 13-Marion Cole. 14-Carol Ann Dressel. 15-Carol Nolan. 36 FOOTBALL TRACK Row 1: Mr. Howells, Mr. Primrose, L. Hopes were high when the boys reported on August 18, 1952, for Orono's second year of football. Although practice field facilities were limited, equipment was of the best and was plentiful. Orono was now a member of the Minnesota Valley Conference and everyone was curious to see how the Spartans would do. Early in the practice sessions films were taken of a full-scale practice scrimmage as an introduction to better football teaching aids at Orono. Since then a movie camera has been purchased by funds raised by the Orono Letter-men's Club. During the final week of practice before our first game we were crippled by injuries to two outstanding boys Captain Jim Courtney and Gary White. Neither boy played much during the remainder of the season and, unfortunately, injuries continued to hamper our progress during the whole season. Due primarily to injuries the offence lagged but gradual improvement was noticeable in defensive play. Although success could not be measured in wins, there was definite progress made toward more prosperous years. Bill Cox was selected unanimously as an all-conference end with his all around consistent play. With the valuable experience gained and a better practice field available for 1953, we are certain of greater teams in the future. Orono salutes the Spartans football players of 1952. It is because of their efforts that we are eager to start again in the fall of '53. With six lettermen returning, the Orono Spartans showed much improvement over their first season of competition. Making their first appearance in the Minnesota Valley Conference, the cagers moved into a fourth place tie on the strength of 8 victories and 6 defeats in conference play. Over the entire season the record book showed 12 wins and 7 losses. Seniors who completed their eligibility this year are Jim Benson, Fran Thompson, Loren Cox, Bill Cox and Captain Gene Meyer, voted most valuable player by his teammates. Outstanding among the juniors were Garland Albers, all conference guard, and Leonard Larson. The Spartans improved fast through the season and climaxed a six game winning streak with a victory over league leading Bloomington and a tournament win over Shakopee, holder of two earlier victories over the Orono team. Any hopes of advancing further in tournament play were dashed by defending state champion Hopkins in the district tournament at Williams Arena. Replacing our five seniors will be a big job for next year. Help will be needed from the returning lettermen and members of the up-and-coming B squad.
