Second row Rzchard Weber Theodore Durst Fredrzck Otto Debatzng An Orono High School Debating team finlshed again in first place 1n the Penobscot Valley Conference with the negative team tylng for first place by winning fixe debates and losing one The affirmative team won third place wlnnlng four and losmg two Both teams won then' prellmmary rounds ln the Bates League allow ing them to go to Bates College April 15 and 16 for the final rounds of the State Champlonshlp Th affirmative and negatlve teams defeated Stearns and Dover Foxcroft respectively for this prlvllege Dana Devoe and Stephen Brush were members of the negatlve team vslnle Ted Durst and Howard Jackson were members of the affirmative team Members of the team have had prevlous debating experience with the exceptlon of Howard Jackson a sophomore Mr George Hersey a U of M student with conslderable varsity de hating experience, was our coach. We feel that Mr Hersey has been very successful with the teams whlch have won fourteen debates and lost three. Mlss Janet Pettee coached the teams for the first part of the debating season. However, her schedule of studles at the Unlverslty compelled her reslgnatlon as coach. Mr. Hersey then took over the teams at the beglnnlng of the P. V.
