AT LAST GAINOR MCGORRILL 49 At last she saw them as they real 15 were squlrmlng and Wflthlhg on the floor thelr beady black eyes bloodshot and lxstless Then the peaceful slckenlng a1r settled down on them and thexr struggle was over Wlth leluctance thexr bodles gave up the fight for lxfe Jane wlth the death weapon st1ll clutched ln her trembhng hand sat down exhausted Her deed was done There lylng on the H001 completely oxercome by DDT were two llttle IIIGS GRADUATION PATRICIA PLUMMER 49 It was June 15 1949 Th1s was not a date that many people would re member but to me It was the most xmportant day ln my llfe for thls was my graduatxon Tlme had tlcked by so qulckly that before I reallzed It sprlng was here and we had begun to dlscuss plans for our class trlp and graduatlon ex ercxses These busy days had passed very qulckly and before I knew It June was here By thls t1me I fully reahzed what graduatlon really meant I could remember VlV1dIy when I hrst entered Orono Hlgh School a seventh grader eager and feellng very much grown up How we look ed wxth envy at the upper classmen especlally the semors' I thought how excltlng It must be to be a Senior and graduatmg I was very glad when I was a Freshman because we really became a part of the school and lts actlvltles I remembel my first prom I was a Sophomore then and th1s was a great event for me When I was a Junior there was Chemlstxy a subject which untll the day I d1e I shall nexer understand I shall never folget my experlence wlth LhlOI'1ll6 and I dont lmaglne my SQHIOI year the happxest year of my hlgh school career Perhaps It was because my subjects were the easlest Th1s year passed the quxckest of all and before long graduation was here THE CHEMISTRY LAB JoYcl: SWAN 50 The Chem1st1y lab-a llkely place For perfume and bows and flowers and lace- But there the mlghty J unlors go And attempt the seed of wisdom to sow Patxently workmg wlth acxds and bases- Our hands a sight even worse our faces Our aprons are a total mess But thls we really must confess To work wlth H2 S04 Requlres really nothing more Than good strong clothes And a stronger nose Of all the thxngs you wear, your expressxon 18 the most important. a halr a statement whlch had be come qulte accustomed to my ears Murphy rolled a glazed eye ball to wards me and pullmg up a stool be gan h1s dally story Thls lndlvldual although a regular lnhabltant of the towns bowl1ng academy fthe only school he had ever attended? could sp1n qulte a yarn when ln the mood Th1s storv as I was later to find out was probably one of hls best You know the other mornlng a funny thlng happened to me I was Fldlng the bus to town and found myself seated besxde a rather spacl ous woman Other than the fact that she spread her frame over more than her faxr share of the seat there was n o t h 1 n g partlcularly outstandlng about her but I dld notlce that she ous pecullarly shaped bundles My comersatlon wlth her was l1m1ted and therefore not belng partlcular ly mterested I falled to notlce untll sexeral m1nutes after her departure that one of her t1n1er packages had fallen on the floor beslde me Nelther knowmg the woman or carmg to make her acquaintance I declded to take the artlcle along wlth me-thls of course bexng agamst my better pr1nc1ples He paused here to llght up one of my cxgarettes and I nodded my head serlously ln agreement as I always dld Two deep drags and a hackmg cough later he contlnued I carrled the package around wxth me for a whlle not bothermg to open It and after several tapplngs and shakmgs my 1ntu1t1on told me that the contents would not be any thing of mtelest to me I declded however that IH v1ew of the fact that my rent was slx weeks over due I would gne xt to my landlady Thxs I d1d and the follow1ng mormng when I came down to breakfast Mrs McGooly rushed madly up to me and threw her al ms about my neck You dear sweet thlng you how dld you guess?
