THE FORTY NINERS JEAN LITTLEFIELD 51 Their walk IS proud and stalwart Thexr gazes filled with scorn For Im a lowly Sophomore Dismal and forlorn They ve reached the peak of wlsdom Of nothing do they fear But I must calmly take lt for They graduate thls year OLD MAN WINTER ROBERT GooD1E 50 Old Man Wlnter was on the prowl thls mornlng but I belng a brave fool went out early for the bus hop 1ng that I could catch a rxde wlth some friendly soul Thus I would save a punch on my pass and would without paymg bus fare After I had held my thumb up to an unendlng llne of passlng cars, all to no avall, I was very much dlS couraged and, of course, cold Oh' here comes another lme of cars There s a r1de ln one of these cars for sure That s what I thought but the drivers had dlfferent ldeas, so I eased my frozen fingers back mto my coat pocket, thmklng that I sure ly would fall v1ct1m to Old Man Wmter What IS this I see No' It can t be' Yes, lt IS' It IS a bus' In those few moments I forgot that I was cold, for here was a rescue party Hastlly I secured my pass from my wallet Now I was prepared to be rescued from Old Man Wlnter Here t comes xt lsn t slowlng down Oh, no' No' No' TAKE ME OLD MAN WINTER I AM ALL YOURS THE BUS WENT BY ME' BIG GAME BUNNY SULLIVAN 51 Excltements rldmg high tonlght In Oronos town hall The buzzer sounds the game begms And Sully gets the ball A pass to Hashey down to Earl The Orono crowd roars Now Sully has the ball again He pivots shoots and scores The boys are really hot tonlght The Riots stlll are way ahead The opponents far behmd The second half IS really rough The boys are gettmg mad They have to vun this game tonight iThe first close one we ve had J There isnt much tlme left to play And before the vshxstle blows Charlie lntercepts a pass He shoots and ln It goes The fans Just cant believe their eyes As they see the final score The boys rush back out on the court And carry Dolan oil' the floor The Riots are a happy team And as thelr vlctory flag unfurls We gxve them a tremendous cheer THE BOSS JUST BEAT THE GIRLS We ean't tell that good Joke about crude oil because lt s not refined . - ' . i , . . . . , . AT LAST GAINOR MCGORRILL 49 At last she saw them as they real 15 were squlrmlng and Wflthlhg on the floor thelr beady black eyes bloodshot and lxstless Then the peaceful slckenlng a1r settled down on them and thexr struggle was over Wlth leluctance thexr bodles gave up the fight for lxfe Jane wlth the death weapon st1ll clutched ln her trembhng hand sat down exhausted Her deed was done There lylng on the H001 completely oxercome by DDT were two llttle IIIGS GRADUATION PATRICIA PLUMMER 49 It was June 15 1949 Th1s was not a date that many people would re member but to me It was the most xmportant day ln my llfe for thls was my graduatxon Tlme had tlcked by so qulckly that before I reallzed It sprlng was here and we had begun to dlscuss plans for our class trlp and graduatlon ex ercxses These busy days had passed very qulckly and before I knew It June was here By thls t1me I fully reahzed what graduatlon really meant I could remember VlV1dIy when I hrst entered Orono Hlgh School a seventh grader eager and feellng very much grown up How we look ed wxth envy at the upper classmen especlally the semors' I thought how excltlng It must be to be a Senior and graduatmg I was very glad when I was a Freshman because we really became a part of the school and lts actlvltles I remembel my first prom I was a Sophomore then and th1s was a great event for me When I was a Junior there was Chemlstxy a subject which untll the day I d1e I shall nexer understand I shall never folget my experlence wlth LhlOI'1ll6 and I dont lmaglne my SQHIOI year the happxest year of my hlgh school career Perhaps It was because my subjects were the easlest Th1s year passed the quxckest of all and before long graduation was here THE CHEMISTRY LAB JoYcl: SWAN 50 The Chem1st1y lab-a llkely place For perfume and bows and flowers and lace- But there the mlghty J unlors go And attempt the seed of wisdom to sow Patxently workmg wlth acxds and bases- Our hands a sight even worse our faces Our aprons are a total mess But thls we really must confess To work wlth H2 S04 Requlres really nothing more Than good strong clothes And a stronger nose Of all the thxngs you wear, your expressxon 18 the most important.
