A5 il ll JLJUOKS FRUM THE IINSJUDIE Orleans initiated its new bowl shaped gym on February 14 with the O. H. S, - English game. It was a gala homecoming night for alumni and friends, who thrilled at the completion of this longed for goal. Comfortable bleachers provide seats for 2, 000 persons in the 130 by 154 room. Above them, tempo- rary bleachers can be set on the broad concrete walkway. Vision obstructed by a post is a thing of the past as the view of the floor is completely unobstructed. A good P. A. system, tiled dressing rooms, attractive public rest rooms, concession booths, and the tunnel ramp which ends the need for players or officials to mingle with the spectators - all these and much more - add up to a gym which should be adequate for years to come. I,t?,!W1iL?.! fa The science room is equip- ped to provide 24 individual working spaces each having electricity, gas outlet, water and sink. A fume expeller should keep the place socially acceptable. There are two storage rooms equipped with cabinets. A germinating table and aquarium will be of use to biology students. IITIX-L 'T' 'l 7352: Z? The wide hall which runs between the classrooms and dressing rooms is well lighted during the day from the sky lights in the ceiling and double glass doors at either end. The 137 lockers provide individual space for students wraps and books. V 3 , V. I y ...,y r Two other classrooms in the new part have been assigned to the English and Commercial Departments. The two rooms are identical, about 25x30 feet in size, the east wall being mostly glass with shelves run- ning the length of the wall under it. Both rooms will have new furniture, 4? is ,,,. , H 5,2 ' we ,ai ., , fg , L i at Ke,-y ff-Q' zz 1 f - , 1 y g ff I gf. V if-71Pf:64'fwf, Sf ' WW ? This room is equipped with 6 kitchen units, beautiful storage cabinets, fitting room with triple mirrors, ample space for the 8 sewing machines, and adequate table space, The space of the former playing floor now serves as a cafeteria or an auditorium. The stage was moved from the center of the old gym to the north side. It is approx- imately the size of the old stage. The acoustics are far superior here to the acous- tics of the old gym. Although the building program is not com- pleted at this writing, most of it will be when the ORLEANA is published. Already science, English, and commercial classes are being held in the new building. A gymnasium with good physical education facili- ties will complete the new building project. Other new additions are a music room, home economics department, auditorium, and admin- istra tion offices included in the remodeling work. There are things yet to be done, but the chal- lenge of better buildings is being met. How- ever, we cannot relax, for a greater challenge lies before us: students, teachers, and the com- munity must work untiringly to use these new facilities to the best advantages in furthering true education, or all the sacrifice and work will have been in vain. Better schools are necessary to build a future for Orleans and its community. We can and will meet the challenge. HELEN CLEVELAND, School Secretary KENNETH WIGGS Superintendent of Orleans School Mr. Wiggs is shown at the new intercom system in his new office. Miss Cleveland stands behind the modern counter. She is the first O.H.S. secretary in a long time who has had ample room to work with those heavy ledgers. all lll 1 I 1 ,. Four grade schools send students to O.H.S.: Bromer, Orangeville, Leipsic, and Orleans. This year only three of these had students that had gone continuously through the grades in one school and then on for four years in O.H.S. Carolyn Cleveland and Jim Stalker, Orangeville and O.H.S. This impressive record may be contributed to two major factors--their fine pitching and improved batting, and their hustle and will to win. Added to this was the fact that this made the third season for several of the players to be in training under Coach McConnell. JN I Safe on second? I 1 3531! K I r 5 WILLARD JOHNSON, Our Maintenance Man School may be out for the students, but there is one man for whom it goes on. To be really symbolic of Willai-d's place at O,H.S,, his picture should have appeared in the opening AND the closing pages of this book. For Willard is at school early to have things ready for the day, and he is here cleaning and putting away after we leave. In fact, he is always here--winter and summer. This year he has been busier than ever, as he has tried to clean out the added dirt we've tracked in from the building project. E' M mi :Q A M A 'N K . , M-, ,,N V- -N , 'vu -6 -PJ!
