Text from Pages 1 - 72 of the 1965 volume:

P or e word When times fly so rapidly, it seems almost an impossibility to find moments to reminisce. We, the Class of 1965, have set aside those rare mo- ments in this book. Our yearbook contains mem- ories of the past, activities of the present, and foreshadows of the future. We invite you to share and enjoy our fond moments. word Published by the Yearbook Staff, Orleans High School, Orleans, Vermont. ins FACULTY—Una Lou Richardson. Ruth V. White, George Huntington. Yearbook Team It may be interesting to know, that one of the largest extracurricular activities each year is the production of our yearbook. It begins in September—the adver- tising, circulation, and photo teams get busy—and ends up “???” with the final proofreading by the eagle-eyed editors and our efficient advisor, Mrs. England. No letter is given for this effort. But in years to come, when most school life is forgotten, the yearbook will be available to refresh memories and to settle argu- ments. Contrary to opinion, the yearbook is a collective ef- fort entailing work from not only those shown on this page, but others who have contributed their time and efforts. For example: Glenn Austin supplied many of the action shots in this book. Our school photog- rapher was Mr. Farland. Meeting the deadline of a yearbook requires much work outside of school. Many nights team members labored long hours; some even enjoyed a seven hour session on that crucial Saturday before the deadline. We—Tom, Mary, Tressa, Jan, Sandy, Carol, Pam, and Mrs. England—had a one-hour break at noon, tho, for sandwiches, potato chips, and cocoa. (Jan forgot her lunch but, we shared.) Mary brought her scrapbook and we had a bang-up time looking at our classmates “way back then”. “We are proud of our yearbook because we have made several radical changes and are pleased with the re- sults. We hope you are . . . —Tom Leonard LIBRARIANS—Seated: C. Tribui, I). Stearns, Mr. Mosher, Advisor. Standing: P. Provost, T. Leonard, J. Lyon, J. I-avoie, C. Thompson. P. Wright, R. Squires, T. Long. A membership drive in September doubled the number of members to 70 AYers. We have had a social each month. These in- cluded a cookout at Willoughby Lake, two bowling parties, a hayride, and a Christmas banquet and dance. At our monthly educational meetings, we had a panel discussion on teenage problems, a speaker, Judge Andrew Pepin, a film on adolescence and re- ports on conventions by delegates. Our Charter Night program, celebrating our 5th anniversary, was held in February. The speaker for the evening was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous. In December eight dele- gates, Mrs. White and Mrs. England attended the International AY Conference in Washington, D.C. with 25 other Vermont AYers. We also sent represen- tatives to the Northeast Regional Conference in Ar- lington, Massachusetts, and the Vermont Convention in Winooski. Two of our members, Tressa Long and Tom Leonard, were state officers this year. Paula. Sue”. Cindy, and Diane serving on Charter Night. WASHING TON. D.C. We began by making and selling Christmas candles and selling fudge at all our home basketball games. Both proved to be very profitable. In October several members attended the North- ern FHA meeting in Morrisville. In January Janice Jacobs, the National Committeeman, attended a meet- ing in Montpelier to help plan the Mt. Snow Con- ference. We sponsored a Valentine Dance in February. In May, FHA once again sponsored the Annual Mother and Daughter Banquet, which was the high- light of the year. In November, for an evening of fun, we feasted on spaghetti; and in Decem- ber we took favors to the residents at the Maple Lane Nursing Home. We did several community projects during the year. One educational tour was the visit to the office of the Orleans Ma nu facturing Com pa n y. We were host to the Eighth Annual Business Get-Together, which features contests in shorthand, typing, and spell- ing. We invited six schools to participate. One reason for this is that our Country Club is one of the best in Vermont. The O.H.S. Boys’ Golf Team came through with a great performance in winning the Vermont State Interscholastic Golf Championship. In the Northern Sectional play at the St. Johnsbury Country Club, Orleans placed first, led by Steve Kipp’s 79 and the fine putting of “Chuck” Dudley. In the state finals at Bellows Falls Country Club, O.H.S. was at its best as it won its first State Golf Championship in the last 30 years. In the individual competition, Steve Kipp de- feated B. Griffin of Rutland High 5-4, and then lost in the finals on the last hole to J. Garand of Mont- pelier. The Girls’ Team also played in the tournament at St. Johnsbury. Upon returning it was rumored that they had a good time even though they did not bring home a trophy. i GIRINS’ TEAM—D. Stearns. C. Thompson, I). Gage, M. Alexan- der. and Mr. Brennan. BOYS’ TEAM—G. Soccer The soccer team had a pretty tough season—win- ning 4 games and losing 7. The team next year will suffer the loss of 9 seniors, all of which played regular- ly. The highlight of the season was the win over Sacred Heart High School, 2 to 0. As in all sports, a win over rival Sacred Heart is a real climax to the season. Best of luck to next year’s team. —John Blanchard SOCCER CHEERLEADERS-J. Dudley, B. Dawson. N. Lavoie, S. Leach. S. Through most of the year, the team was led by the scoring of Mike Kipp, but when he was moved up to varsity, Mike Bergeron stepped into his place. Incidentally, this was the first year that the JV team has been coached by someone other than the Varsity coach. Outdoor recreation for all four seasons were expressed in many media. Beauty of our environment was found in the designs of leaves and flowers, driftwood and gourds, and cranberries on the vine. Shapes of trees were designed through paper tearing and watercolor. The Christmas tree industry was pursued. Four ex- program this year to help us all to be more appreciative of this won- amples, of trees supplied by Mr. Dunbar of U.S. Conservation Serv- ice, were studied. The wild animals and fowls of Vermont were sub- jects of several art classes—not only the appearance but the state laws regarding them and their association with our life. We cooperated with the 1965 Vermont Maple Cut-Out Contest. The projects of Cynthia Matthews (grade 8) and Michael Kelley (grade 7) were the best. —Carolyn Smith, Art Supervisor j.h. CHEERLEADERS-D. I laven’t We Grown Up)! 57 Gloria— Our JV Cheerleader— PRESENTING THE CLASS HISTORY Memories In September of 1961, 65 Freshmen entered Orleans High School. At the time, we were the largest Freshman class in the history of the school. Our introduction to OHS was the Freshman Reception sponsored by the Sophomores. Those of the class who managed to survive the occasion elected the following class officers: President, Keith HiHiker; Vice-President, Barry Barton; Secretary, “Deb” Gage; and Treasurer, John Blanchard. Our Class advisors, Mr. Jarvis and Mrs. White, guided us through this year. Our Sophomore year found “Bill” Hodgdon, President; John Blanchard, Vice-President; Janinc Metcalf, Secretary, and Keith Hilliker, Treasurer. From our point of view, the outstanding social event of this year was the Freshman Reception, which we sponsored. Prof. Leslie and Mr. Nicely were the class advisors. As Juniors, we were busy making the Sadie Hawkins Dance and the Junior Prom a success. The theme of the prom was “Blue Hawaii,” and it was held at the Country Club. Class officers were: President, John Blanchard; Vice-President Anna Hull; Secretary, Diane Cota; and Treasurer, Sandra Robinson. Sandra Robinson was a delegate to Girls' State and Steve Kipp, Keith Hilliker, and Bill Hodgdon went to Boys’ State. Mr. Barton and Mrs. Hougha- boon served as our class advisors. As we entered upon our final year in high school, we chose for President, Ernest Emmerson; Vice-President, Anna Hull; Secre- tary, Tressa Long; and Treasurer, Deb” Gage. The time passed quickly as we were having pictures taken, getting the yearbook done, preparing for graduation, and participating in the many other activities of high school with the help cf our advisors Mrs. England and Mr. Brennan. At this time, we are anticipating graduation with eagerness and yet with apprehension. For we realize that upon graduation, we revoke once and for all our childhood and enter life’s main- stream as adults. As we do so, we will always cherish fond memories of our four happy years at Orleans High School. —“Bob” and Ricky” THE ADVERTISEMENTS 1965 PROFESSIONAL ORLEANS A. L. Bonvouloir, M.D. S. B.
